00:00 An American man has been sentenced to life in prison by a German court for the rape and
00:06 murder of an American tourist and the attempted murder of her friend.
00:12 The attack in June of last year at Germany's Neuschwanstein Castle, the country's most
00:17 famous tourist destination, drew worldwide attention.
00:22 The 31-year-old tourist from Michigan, identified by the court as Troy B., befriended and then
00:28 lured the two women away from a public path with the promise of an even better vantage
00:33 point.
00:34 He then throttled and raped the 21-year-old woman and threw her 22-year-old friend down
00:40 a 330-foot ravine when she rushed to help.
00:45 The 21-year-old was tossed over the ledge after Troy B. raped her.
00:50 She died in hospital several hours later.
00:54 The court found that the strangling alone would have been fatal.
00:58 Her 22-year-old friend survived with severe injuries.
01:03 The judge noted that the crime was one of particular gravity, a finding that means the
01:08 perpetrator will not receive automatic parole after 15 years, as is the case for non-aggravated
01:15 murder.
01:16 The conviction can be appealed and Troy B. can apply to serve his sentence in the U.S.,
01:21 though his lawyers said they advised him not to do so since conditions of detention in
01:27 Germany were better.
