00:00:00 Welcome to Cairo, Egypt for the conclusion of Super Saturday.
00:00:05 It's time for the men's final.
00:00:07 We had an exciting and exhilarating, a dramatic women's final and that was just part one of
00:00:15 Super Saturday.
00:00:16 We round things up in the men's category.
00:00:19 18 athletes all vying up against each other.
00:00:22 The temperature has risen 4 degrees.
00:00:24 The temperature of the competition is rising by every second.
00:00:27 The drama continues to unfold in front of our very eyes here in Cairo, Egypt.
00:00:33 It's Olympic year and let's take a look at how the new format takes place.
00:00:37 Qualification starts where athlete numbers are reduced to two groups of 18 with semifinal
00:00:42 A and B taking place.
00:00:43 After the semis we're left with the 18 best athletes who contested in the final.
00:00:47 The event takes place over a condensed 90 minute duration.
00:00:51 Five disciplines with 18 athletes up against each other and competing for the medals.
00:00:55 The day is of course final day so riding is demonstrated for the first time.
00:01:00 The scores that are given out on your screens at the moment.
00:01:03 We'll go into greater detail later of course in the competition when riding begins in a
00:01:07 few minutes time.
00:01:08 It's then over to the fencing bonus round for the one on one bouts with the conclusion
00:01:12 of the fencing action.
00:01:13 Each bout's worth two extra points there.
00:01:15 It's then off to the swimming pool for the heats of the swimming freestyle here in Cairo.
00:01:21 It's a 50 metre pool so expect some quick times.
00:01:24 And then we conclude with the ever dramatic laser run.
00:01:26 Five laps of the 600 metre circuit with four laser shooting rounds where the athletes have
00:01:30 to shoot the five targets.
00:01:32 The first over the finish line as always is the winner.
00:01:36 This is the new format.
00:01:37 It's fast, it's frantic and a new challenge for athletes to overcome.
00:01:41 It's the Olympic year everybody so strap yourselves in.
00:01:44 Welcome to Modern Pentathlon 2024.
00:01:49 Well those are the medals that the athletes will be competing for today but before we
00:01:53 get into the action let's just take a quick look at the Olympic rankings.
00:01:56 Andres Torres currently top of the pile.
00:01:59 Bence Cardos in second place.
00:02:00 Emiliano Hernandez in third place.
00:02:03 But these rankings will of course reshuffle as the season goes on.
00:02:08 This is just the first event of the year.
00:02:11 It's all about trying to get inside that top nine to get yourself an Olympic qualification
00:02:15 spot.
00:02:16 It's all eyes on Paris.
00:02:17 Ladies and gentlemen welcome back to the new Identity Pentathlon World Cup Cairo edition.
00:02:18 So just having a look at the back end of those rankings.
00:02:30 And we will take a look at the fencing bonus rounds in a few moments time.
00:02:39 But before we do that let's just recap on the ranking round.
00:02:43 Christopher Pats who's won two gold medals in Cairo in previous times.
00:02:48 He's doing very well.
00:02:49 Deza Chung had to withdraw from the competition.
00:02:51 The Olympic champion has withdrawn for what he said precautionary measures.
00:02:57 And let's take a look then at the ranking round results.
00:03:01 Christopher Pats with 24 victories.
00:03:03 Emiliano Cardoso with 23.
00:03:05 Marvin Dogg who's already qualified for the Olympics is in third place also on 23 victories.
00:03:12 Two French athletes inside the top four.
00:03:14 Alan Tombolo and Charlie Brown who won gold at the Hungarian Indoor Championships just
00:03:19 a few weeks ago has continued his good start to the year.
00:03:22 He is in that top five and looking further down Emiliano Hernandez, Chang Wang Seo.
00:03:27 They could maybe cause problems if they put together a good day today.
00:03:32 So we are up to speed with where the competition is up to so far.
00:03:37 It's ranking round done.
00:03:40 We now begin the day's action with the riding.
00:03:44 Eighteen athletes take on this riding arena.
00:03:47 Everyone starts with 300 points.
00:03:48 The aim of the game is to keep as many of those 300 points as you possibly can.
00:03:52 Our first athlete will be Matej Lukas.
00:04:04 Matej Lukas qualified after Mohammad Gindi was eliminated from semifinal A. Matej Lukas
00:04:14 first out on the course.
00:04:16 There we go over.
00:04:20 Hence number one and two cleanly.
00:04:22 Does so in good pace.
00:04:24 Left hand turn onto three.
00:04:27 Over four A and B. Ten obstacles of course for the athletes to overcome.
00:04:37 If the horse refuses they lose ten points.
00:04:40 If they get three refusals they are eliminated.
00:04:42 If they come off the horse they are eliminated.
00:04:44 If they knock down like Matej just did then you lose seven points from your score.
00:04:50 So four, eight, three the score now for Matej Lukas of the Czech Republic as he is looking
00:04:55 to try and make up as much possible time as he can.
00:04:57 Three eliminations from the women earlier on today as well as a multitude of perfect
00:05:03 scores.
00:05:04 This course is relatively forgiving if you get things right you are armed with a chance
00:05:09 of getting a very good score here in Cairo which is what Matej Lukas has done.
00:05:13 The time is 1.02 to beat.
00:05:14 He's got a 58.
00:05:15 Just one knock down.
00:05:16 It's a score of 2.93 for the Czech.
00:05:17 No time penalties.
00:05:18 Seven jumping penalties.
00:05:19 A score of 293.
00:05:20 293.
00:05:21 So a nice start off to the men's final today with a 2.93 from Matej Lukas.
00:05:41 The man who made an entrance at the end of the semi-final will be Changwon Seo.
00:05:45 His next up in the arena from Korea.
00:05:51 Changwon Seo has got himself into good positions in previous competitions.
00:05:56 Got himself medals.
00:05:57 A very good accomplished athlete.
00:06:00 And here he is on course now in 17th place.
00:06:07 Yeah, a lot of time to make up for after a bad ranking round.
00:06:13 And already lost seven points due to a knock down on three there.
00:06:21 So seven off the score for Changwon Seo.
00:06:24 And if he realistically is to stand a chance of shooting up those rankings, he needs to
00:06:29 make sure he is not making more mistakes in this ride.
00:06:33 There's another knock down for Changwon Seo and that drops him down to last place.
00:06:36 So it's going to be an upward struggle now for Changwon Seo this rest of the competition.
00:06:42 So, Seo is cutting back round.
00:06:49 Through the centre of the course.
00:06:52 So, another knock down for Seo.
00:06:55 That's now 21 points off of the Korean score.
00:06:59 And he ends the run back on 1.02.
00:07:04 It's a score of 4.79 for Seo.
00:07:07 2.79 should I say.
00:07:09 So, Emiliano Hernandez is up next.
00:07:34 Hernandez was the World Championship silver medalist.
00:07:39 And let's see how he can get on.
00:07:42 He's a quick runner.
00:07:43 He had aspirations of following in his brother's footsteps and winning a medal of his own at
00:07:49 the Olympics.
00:07:50 His brother was a bronze medalist in Rio 2016.
00:07:53 Qualified for the Games after being victorious at the Pan American Games.
00:07:58 But knows he has to hold on to that spot.
00:08:02 Finished by his teammate Emmanuel Padilla for example.
00:08:05 He's one of the other Mexican athletes looking to try and get his spot at the Paris Games.
00:08:14 So, he's looking pretty good from Hernandez.
00:08:21 He is currently 45 points off the lead.
00:08:26 And it's looking very good indeed.
00:08:29 So far so good for Hernandez.
00:08:32 2 to go.
00:08:35 Oh, it's knocked down.
00:08:36 So, that's 7 points off his score.
00:08:39 Oh, and it's a refusal into obstacle 10.
00:08:42 Oh, that's so unfortunate.
00:08:43 He needs to make sure he rounds it off here.
00:08:47 Oh, it's a second refusal.
00:08:50 And just like that it was going so well for Hernandez.
00:08:53 He finishes in the end 14 seconds off.
00:08:57 That is a 2.59 and I think it's fairly safe to say goodbye to him.
00:09:07 Yeah, it was looking good until the end there.
00:09:12 Tough ride for Emiliano Hernandez.
00:09:16 Score of 2.59.
00:09:19 So, Balashev from Hungary.
00:09:29 Yeah, Balashev is part of a crop of up and coming Hungarian athletes.
00:09:38 Balashev really has been around for a while now, hasn't he?
00:09:41 He got his first bronze medal in Los Angeles in 2018.
00:09:44 He's picked up a few medals since then including one in Cairo in 2022.
00:10:00 Going clear so far.
00:10:01 Alright, 40 points off the lead.
00:10:15 Going into his final two fences.
00:10:18 Things are looking good.
00:10:25 And that is our first perfect score for Balashev of Hungary.
00:10:32 That's really going to help his cause.
00:10:34 He's 40 points off the lead but that will be the maximum he will be off the lead.
00:10:42 He's giving himself a good chance for a perfect score.
00:11:02 Up next, Pierre de Jodon.
00:11:05 Possibly a threat to the leading pack.
00:11:09 Strong laser runner but a refusal there on three.
00:11:11 I think it was just a knockdown.
00:11:13 Knockdown, sorry, yeah.
00:11:14 So just a seven points refusal is a big problem, isn't it?
00:11:22 Because it's not just the ten points you lose from the score, it's the time you lose as
00:11:25 well.
00:11:28 I love actually watching credit because it's kind of the opposite of everything else in
00:11:35 pentathlon where it's extremely frantic and here you need to be calm and collected because
00:11:41 stress can obviously affect the horse.
00:11:44 Yeah, oh dear.
00:11:46 There is an issue for Pierre de Jodon.
00:11:49 He has to stay on the horse.
00:11:50 He has done.
00:11:51 He'll have to give a shot at the moment.
00:11:52 There he is.
00:11:53 That's obviously a refusal but another knockdown.
00:11:54 He completes the course.
00:11:55 That's unlucky.
00:11:56 He's actually the purest.
00:11:57 Not had the worst score in the world given that it all came down to the ten points.
00:12:10 Yeah, he had a clear round with the women on the first line.
00:12:17 What would you say went wrong there for Pierre?
00:12:23 I have no idea to be honest.
00:12:34 It's not something that usually happens but again some things can come and stuck momentarily.
00:12:41 He managed to finish that course and that's the most important thing.
00:12:46 So another threat to those leading athletes Jean-Baptiste Mourcier of France.
00:12:52 Yeah, we know just how good his laser run is.
00:12:54 He qualified beautifully, didn't he?
00:12:56 He put together a very good sequence to get himself into this final.
00:13:02 Jean-Baptiste Mourcier.
00:13:04 Left hand turn into five and six.
00:13:13 Right down the middle of the oxer of seven.
00:13:19 Goes wide around eight but gets through.
00:13:33 It's looking good for Jean-Baptiste Mourcier who could be dangerous from this point.
00:13:37 Only 35 off the lead.
00:13:39 Looking to round this off.
00:13:41 Over nine.
00:13:42 Flat out towards ten.
00:13:45 Jean-Baptiste posts the second perfect score of the afternoon.
00:13:52 It's a 300 for Jean-Baptiste.
00:13:56 And that is a very, very useful performance.
00:14:03 Well done.
00:14:04 He's giving himself a good chance there.
00:14:10 We'll see how that affects the competition later on in the tournament.
00:14:16 Richard Bresci up next.
00:14:18 Yeah, the second of these three Hungarians in the finals.
00:14:28 So Richard Bresci, one of the more experienced athletes out there.
00:14:40 He was a gold medalist at the 2022 Europeans.
00:14:51 Yeah, fair and well so far.
00:14:54 Left hand turn into five and six which are related.
00:14:58 Needs to centre that horse in the middle of the fence.
00:15:00 Does so well.
00:15:04 It's going fast as well so don't expect any time penalties there.
00:15:08 Seven A and B cleared.
00:15:11 Three fences to go.
00:15:12 Eight is cleared.
00:15:14 Looking very good for Bresci who's looking to follow on from his team-mate Balaszyk
00:15:20 with a perfect score.
00:15:22 There we go, straight flat out towards that final obstacle.
00:15:25 It's a clear round for Richard Bresci, a 300.
00:15:32 Great ride that.
00:15:35 Yeah, it shows the experience of the athlete coming out and pulling off a great ride just like that.
00:15:49 So Skutovsky is next up.
00:15:52 Again, a possible threat to those higher ranked.
00:15:58 Strong runner, solid shooter.
00:16:02 And off we go.
00:16:04 Clears fence number one.
00:16:06 Broken line into two.
00:16:10 Left hand turn and moves on to obstacle number three.
00:16:14 Clears that.
00:16:16 Moves on to four A and B.
00:16:25 Bit of a long distance between four and five.
00:16:34 Knocked down there with the hind legs of the horse at six.
00:16:42 Clear seven A and B.
00:16:44 Will do well if he gets away with just those seven penalties.
00:16:48 Two obstacles to go.
00:16:52 Over nine.
00:16:55 And Lukasz Skutovsky gets away with just those seven penalties.
00:16:59 So a score of 293 for Lukasz Skutovsky.
00:17:05 293 then for Skutovsky and that's a job well done from the Polish athletes.
00:17:13 Skutov in the Tokyo 2020 Games looking to get himself as far up the rankings as he possibly can.
00:17:23 And listen to the crowd now as Mottas Mohamed makes his way to the arena.
00:17:32 So Mottas Mohamed will be first of four Egyptians in this final.
00:17:45 Mottas turns into three, clears that onto four A and B.
00:17:48 Having a bit of an issue centering that horse but running clear so far.
00:17:57 As we move on to fence number five and a straight line into fence number six.
00:18:04 Good round this from Mottas Mohamed in front of his home crowd on horse 17, Sander Leczen.
00:18:12 Clear seven A and B.
00:18:15 Mottas Mohamed 30 points off the lead.
00:18:18 Going well here on the right, just a couple of fences still to go.
00:18:24 Looking good.
00:18:27 Nicely done.
00:18:29 Straight run now through obstacle 10.
00:18:32 And he's gone a second over so it's not a perfect score but it's a 299 which is as good as it's going to get.
00:18:40 Another perfect score and Mottas Mohamed, job very well done.
00:18:49 A youngster making his way onto the senior scene for sure.
00:18:54 He was a former youth world champion and definitely threatening the seniors at this point.
00:19:03 And Shababum is next up in the arena from Hungary.
00:19:09 Here we go Shababum.
00:19:15 First knockdown. That knockdown knocks him down the standings.
00:19:20 You can see how costly each knockdown can be.
00:19:23 Seven points, ten points for a refusal every second over the time of 1.02 is a point.
00:19:28 I've just scored points turn into seconds later on in the competition when the handicap comes in.
00:19:36 He's a bit off centre in those fences and that may be the issue with that knockdown.
00:19:42 He's managed to pick himself up.
00:19:47 Shababum seems to be on something quite good here. He's just got that one knockdown so far.
00:20:00 Ten seconds still to go to remain within the time limit.
00:20:03 One obstacle left. Time-wise it's looking good. Good ride by Shababum.
00:20:07 It's another 2.93.
00:20:14 He'll be happy with that I think, no?
00:20:18 Yeah 2.93 is a solid score and looking at where he is right now in the standings it's highly likely that he'll be up on that podium.
00:20:34 Shababum is next up in the arena. He is the World Cup Final winner from last year.
00:20:40 Yeah, Mohamed Shababum won a medal at every competition last year including as Marian rightly says World Cup Final gold.
00:20:48 He won an event medal at every event, should I say, except for Cairo here, his home event.
00:20:58 It's a knockdown early on for Shababum. He now moves outside of the 30 second window to get himself within a good range of the top positions.
00:21:14 And again a knockdown from Shababum. So Shababum struggling here.
00:21:20 Can't afford any more knockdowns or this could start to get costly very quickly for Shababum.
00:21:34 Still on a score of 2.86. Oh and it's a knockdown on the final obstacle meaning it'll be a 2.79.
00:21:42 He dropped down to 14th place and pre-event he definitely would have been an athlete he would have expected to finish on the podium.
00:21:52 So difficult competition for Mohamed Shababum.
00:21:57 It's not getting any easier. He's really got his work cut out now as this competition gets into its latter stages now.
00:22:08 Valentin Bello on Caligi. Two times world champion.
00:22:18 He's on the course.
00:22:35 Yeah on his third fence now.
00:22:38 So far so good for Valentin Bello.
00:22:52 Hasn't yet secured his ticket to Paris as he takes a first knockdown there. So ranking is now the best chance he has for getting himself to Paris.
00:23:06 No questions that he is one of the best athletes out there. Just that seven points so far off his score as he comes around the latter stages of this course.
00:23:18 That was super quick from Bello. A little bit too quick. But regardless of that it's a 2.93. A very good score for Valentin Bello.
00:23:29 Yeah lightning fast round from him.
00:23:46 Charlie Brown. British athlete. Yeah it's his birthday today. Yeah that's true. It's Charlie's 21st birthday. Can he celebrate his birthday with a podium?
00:24:00 Yeah he started the season off with a podium in Budapest Endors.
00:24:05 He's not won a World Cup individual medal before. Could this be the first event? Charlie Brown in sixth place. Hasn't secured his spots in Paris yet.
00:24:17 Joseph Chung. British athlete. Withdrew from the competition yesterday.
00:24:25 Charlie Brown is Britain's best bet for a medal here. Best and only bet. He's the only British athlete in this final. Sam Curry didn't qualify for the final.
00:24:35 He made it through to the semi-finals. Just missed out on a place in the final. Charlie Brown is going well here. This is a good ride so far.
00:24:41 21 years of age today. Charlie Brown establishing himself on the circuit. Good athlete Charlie Brown.
00:24:48 And you do feel with this form he will get himself a ticket to the Olympic Games. And a clear ride here is going to make him a definite medal contender.
00:24:59 Two obstacles still to go. Straight towards obstacle 10 and he's cleared it.
00:25:07 Brilliant, brilliant ride from Charlie Brown of Great Britain. Here he comes with a third perfect score and you can't do more than that.
00:25:17 Oh we've got four time penalties. I missed that. So it's a 2.96 for Brown but still a very good score.
00:25:23 And Charlie Brown is, make no mistake about it, a medal threat. He's got a good laser run as well.
00:25:35 So up next is the Olympic silver medalist. No sorry, it's Ahmed Hamed.
00:25:42 The two Egyptians back to back, Ahmed Hamed and Ahmed El Gendy. Ahmed Hamed is up first. Locked on score with Ahmed El Gendy.
00:25:51 Yeah so a good ride here can really put a gap between the two athletes. Still have of course a fencing bonus round and swimming to go.
00:26:00 For the laser run that is.
00:26:05 Ahmed Hamed is on a good start to this ride. 7a complete. 8.9 and 10 to go.
00:26:25 Clears 8 and it's a sharp right turn back down the middle towards the penultimate obstacle of this course and it's a knockdown.
00:26:34 Needs to keep it clear here through 10 which he does. Time wise it's good. It's a 2.93 for Hamed.
00:26:42 Back to back Egyptians. Ahmed El Gendy will be out next.
00:26:49 And there's a very nervous Marion Amur in the commentary box next to me now. Her fiancé is on the course. Ahmed El Gendy.
00:27:04 I don't think we're going to hear too much from Marion from this ride. Ahmed El Gendy.
00:27:11 He changed horses didn't he? Can you confirm? He didn't. He stuck with the same horse because this was the horse that Marianna Aceo got an elimination from.
00:27:19 So he's stuck with the same horse. How will Ahmed El Gendy get on?
00:27:24 Off to a good start. Clears the first two. 4a and 4b.
00:27:36 Just hoping for a clear run here so that we can get Marion back into the commentary box. She looks nervous but he's looking pretty confident out there.
00:27:43 I must say this is a really good start to this ride for El Gendy. He's carrying a lot of Egyptian hope with him after his brother Mohammed El Gendy was eliminated from the competition yesterday.
00:27:53 After he left the shooting range with only four targets lit up.
00:27:58 El Gendy the Olympic silver medalist. Winner of the World Cup here in Cairo before.
00:28:06 And he's going very well here. 20 points off the lead but a clear ride here from El Gendy has made him a serious medal contender.
00:28:17 Ahmed El Gendy goes clear on a horse that was struggled on earlier. And that's brilliant.
00:28:23 Marion, can we get some thoughts from you now? Yeah, I'm back.
00:28:28 Yeah, just the nerves of the riding and everything. But yeah, fantastic run from him.
00:28:33 Considering that the horse was eliminated in the first round with the women with Marianna Aceo.
00:28:41 I'd say that maybe added to his nerves before his ride, but carried on well and left with a 300.
00:28:50 Well done, Ahmed El Gendy. We'll see you later on in the competition at the top end of things.
00:28:56 Up next, Kamil Kasprzyk of Poland. Kasprzyk was fourth in the European 24 Championships.
00:29:07 Making a name for himself in the seniors here. Can he go clear? Can he match what Ahmed El Gendy did?
00:29:12 Christopher Patz is currently in first place. Christopher Patz has won two golds in Cairo before, looking to make it three.
00:29:28 On to 7AMB, right hand turn. That's good so far from Kamil Kasprzyk. 7AMB clear, three fences to go.
00:29:41 Eight is cleared. Right hand turn into nine and a broken line into ten. Clears nine.
00:29:49 One to go. Kasprzyk for a perfect score. It's another perfect score, back to back 300s.
00:29:58 This lead group are really starting to hammer down their grip on this competition.
00:30:04 From Valentin Beleau onwards, we've not had anyone less than 2.93. It was a 2.93 from Beleau, a 2.96 from Brown, a 2.93 from Ahmed El Gendy.
00:30:13 A perfect 300 from El Gendy and Kasprzyk. Two athletes remain and pressure now on Marvin Dogg and Christopher Patz.
00:30:21 And you do have to feel a bit nervous for these two athletes because any mistake now and they are going to drop position.
00:30:30 Marvin Dogg, winner of silver in World Cup Final 2019 in Tokyo. Winner of silver in Prague in 2019.
00:30:43 Picking up a couple of medal dead, one knockdown though and that drops him down to third place.
00:30:49 Now just eight points above Ahmed El Gendy. Out of those medal positions if he gets another knockdown it will be even closer.
00:30:58 Five and six are cleared.
00:31:05 He's adopting the standing position with his riding today. Seven A and B are cleared as well.
00:31:15 Off to nine, clears that. Eight sorry.
00:31:19 Two to go for Marvin Dogg who has already secured his spots at Tokyo. Marvin Dogg clears obstacle ten I should say.
00:31:31 Has secured his spots at Paris where Olympics are behind. It's a 2.93 for Marvin Dogg and that is a really good ride.
00:31:43 German athletes on horse one, our barrier. His brother Patrick watching on in the background.
00:31:52 Christopher Patz our final athlete in the riding arena.
00:32:03 He is in first place, a two times gold medalist here in Cairo.
00:32:13 Had a bit of an issue turning into two there, barely makes it but gets away with it. That is how finely positioned athletes are.
00:32:25 Oh no it's a refusal. So ten points off the score of Christopher Patz and he's not looking confident out there on this riding course.
00:32:32 Needs to get over this fence. Now it's a second refusal. Oh no.
00:32:36 Well Christopher Patz was in such a good position and that is an elimination.
00:32:43 Well Christopher Patz was looking for a third gold medal here in Cairo and just like that he becomes our first and only elimination from the men's riding.
00:32:57 Oh my goodness me. That was dramatic for sure. I mean to be the leader through and through and things just end.
00:33:06 At the ride is a tough one. Yeah it's tough to watch, tough to see.
00:33:13 I think we had a most favourite for gold but here are the standings as things are right now. Camille Kasprzak in first.
00:33:20 Yeah well closed things up at the top hasn't it. Kasprzak in first place, seven points clear of Marvin Duggan.
00:33:24 Second Ahmed Agendie a further eight points back after that perfect ride. Charlie Brown with a 2.96 is in fourth place.
00:33:31 Ahmed Hamad and Valentin Belo joint fifth and sixth place.
00:33:36 Utaz Mohamed in seventh. Richard Boretsky and Jean-Baptiste Moser in eighth and ninth place.
00:33:44 Looking further down Chababoum could be dangerous from there.
00:33:50 Adkud Balashev, Lukas Kukovski and Mohamed Chaban are athletes to keep an eye on.
00:33:57 Pierre Desjardins has got a good laser on. Yeah still a lot to play for.
00:34:02 Emiliano Hernandez and Chang Wang Seo. Wow Emiliano Hernandez you feel is going to struggle from that point.
00:34:09 That concludes the riding. Let's take a look back at the highlights.

00:35:13 Welcome back to Cairo for the first World Cup of the 2024 Pentathlon season.
00:35:37 Riding's done and dusted. Let's see how things move over to the fencing bonus round stage.
00:35:41 The ranking round happened a couple of days ago.
00:35:44 The athletes getting their scores together for that and we'll go through those scores in a moment's time.
00:35:49 But it's fencing bonus round now. Bonus is the name of the game.
00:35:53 You get a bonus couple of points for every victory you pick up.
00:35:57 Put together a little run and it can actually be quite beneficial to your overall score.
00:36:01 We saw the likes of four victories for Alexandra Fredo in the competition in the women's final.
00:36:07 [Music]
00:36:10 Actually Alice Litte-Sotero on the flex. Another Italian athlete who put together that good run.
00:36:16 [Music]
00:36:19 So yeah this is the fencing bonus round.
00:36:29 And it's just a five minute transition between the start of this event and the end of riding.
00:36:40 So Maryam, what do you make of the competition so far?
00:36:43 I mean we've had some decent rides. The only surprise there was Christopher Pact getting eliminated.
00:36:49 It was a real shock that as well wasn't it?
00:36:51 Just blows the competition wide open. I think we had him as favourite for gold.
00:36:56 I think you had him as favourite for gold.
00:36:59 I mean I'm not saying he wasn't going to win gold but I personally felt that Ahmed El-Gendi is my favourite for gold.
00:37:07 Given his history here. I'm quite surprised you haven't backed Ahmed El-Gendi.
00:37:17 I'm just going on the numbers.
00:37:22 But yeah definitely anyone from that top pack can make it in.
00:37:27 I mean even people further down, Chaba Boum, Mouattaz Mohamed, Lukas Gatovski, I think all are in a chance for competing with that top pack for sure.
00:37:39 They aren't too far behind.
00:37:41 We still of course have the fencing bonus round which will commence in a couple minutes time and then it's off to the pool.
00:37:50 So we are going up to the start of coverage of the fencing bonus round.
00:37:57 Two points for every bounce. That is one.
00:38:05 You can see Chang Wang Tse and Lei actually. She is meant to be 5 points between riding and fencing.
00:38:29 And you can see the athletes just getting themselves prepared. There's Emiliano Hernandez.
00:38:36 A good ride for Emiliano Hernandez.
00:38:42 We are going to grab a word with Patrick Dogg in a moment's time just to get his thoughts on the competition so far.
00:38:48 He hasn't qualified for the finals so we are going to utilise him as best as we can.
00:38:56 Let's welcome in to the commentary box Patrick Dogg, German athlete.
00:39:00 Patrick, just start by saying happy birthday my friend.
00:39:04 Thank you.
00:39:05 32 years young.
00:39:07 23 years reverse.
00:39:08 That sounds better.
00:39:10 How are you doing? Happy birthday my friend.
00:39:12 Thank you for joining us.
00:39:13 Listen, we are sorry you didn't make it through to the final first of all.
00:39:16 But it happens.
00:39:18 I am not the youngest anymore.
00:39:20 I am showing good results today and showing good performances.
00:39:24 It is getting harder and harder to get into the final.
00:39:27 What have you made of the competition so far?
00:39:29 Christopher Papp with an elimination was a bit of a shock.
00:39:31 It was a shock.
00:39:33 I heard that the horse was the horse of Elodie Travell in the women's final.
00:39:38 I talked to Elodie and she said it is a good horse but maybe he had some issues.
00:39:44 They were just working to each other about that of course.
00:39:46 She would have said this is what the strength of this horse is.
00:39:49 It was of course a shock because the French team is so strong.
00:39:52 It is really hard to qualify to be top two in France, to qualify for Paris.
00:39:56 There is even more pressure for them to have the Olympic Games in their own country.
00:40:01 It was a good opportunity, a good chance for him to show his performance.
00:40:08 What do you think of your chances of getting to Paris?
00:40:11 How are you feeling this season going into the Olympic year?
00:40:14 I was not sick. I was not injured during the preparation.
00:40:18 You had a good qualification fencing.
00:40:20 I had a good qualification fencing. My final fencing was not that good.
00:40:23 Sometimes it happens like this.
00:40:25 I am here. I will continue, go to every competition, try my best.
00:40:31 You will do every competition this year?
00:40:33 Yes, I will do every World Cup.
00:40:34 You are well backed by the German Federation, aren't you?
00:40:36 What?
00:40:37 You are well backed by the German Federation, aren't you?
00:40:38 Yes.
00:40:39 They are a big fan of yours. We are all a big fan of yours.
00:40:41 Thank you.
00:40:42 Birthday this evening. Do you have any plans for your celebration?
00:40:45 I have nothing to do. The hotel is in the middle of the desert.
00:40:48 There is nothing around.
00:40:50 Olympic year, you should be focusing on the Olympics. Training hard.
00:40:53 For sure.
00:40:54 Birthday is once a year. I think you can make a little excuse.
00:41:01 Marvin, your brother is going well here, isn't he?
00:41:04 Yes.
00:41:05 Let me look at his riding score.
00:41:08 He had one knockdown.
00:41:09 293, wasn't it?
00:41:10 Yes.
00:41:11 He is probably dropped down now to fourth.
00:41:15 Is he still in second place?
00:41:17 I haven't seen any results.
00:41:18 He is in a good position regardless, isn't he?
00:41:21 Marvin had a very good 2019, didn't he?
00:41:25 Obviously, he didn't end up qualifying for Tokyo in the end.
00:41:30 The coronavirus pandemic came at the wrong time for everyone.
00:41:33 For athletes with momentum, it seems to dent his momentum a little bit, doesn't it?
00:41:38 Yes. His season 2019, all the Germans were good except me.
00:41:45 It was kind of crazy.
00:41:48 At the European Championships, that's where I qualified because I was the best in that competition.
00:41:55 The season for Marvin started pretty well.
00:41:58 I guess he became sixth at the first workout.
00:42:01 Then COVID came and everything was delayed by one year.
00:42:05 At the end of the season before the Olympics in Tokyo,
00:42:08 we were all in the top 13 or top 15 of the world ranking.
00:42:13 We were strong teams. Zilliqant, Liebig.
00:42:16 At the end, it was just luck who made it.
00:42:22 You've done two Olympics, really?
00:42:24 Two Olympics.
00:42:25 Two Olympics.
00:42:26 In Rio and Tokyo.
00:42:28 Best of luck for the rest of the season.
00:42:31 We're going to try and talk to you a bit later before the start of the Southern.
00:42:34 We've got a bit of expertise on that transition period.
00:42:36 We'll get you in front of the camera.
00:42:38 Those tuning in now will get to see your face.
00:42:41 Happy birthday again.
00:42:42 Thank you.
00:42:43 I'm going to wish you a happy birthday every time we speak to you.
00:42:45 Maybe next year.
00:42:46 We'll make a big deal of this.
00:42:50 We'll speak to you again soon.
00:42:52 Thank you. See you later.
00:42:53 Good luck.
00:42:54 Patrick Dogg joining us live here from Cairo.
00:42:57 He will be back poolside when we have the transition between the swimming and the fencing.
00:43:05 It's always good to hear from Patrick.
00:43:07 He's a good guy. Very popular.
00:43:09 We'll catch him in a little bit by Patrick.
00:43:12 Welcome back, Marion.
00:43:13 One athlete out, one athlete back in.
00:43:15 Hello.
00:43:16 Hello.
00:43:17 I think you enjoyed Patrick.
00:43:19 Patrick's company with him.
00:43:21 They're listeners, not competition.
00:43:23 And you're cool commentators.
00:43:24 Fresh things up from circus.
00:43:29 It's good to hear from Patrick.
00:43:30 He's such an experienced athlete.
00:43:32 He's been to two Olympic Games.
00:43:33 He's an ever present in the sport.
00:43:36 He's Mr. Consistent.
00:43:38 Won a bronze medal in Budapest in 2021.
00:43:43 Medals in mixed boulevards.
00:43:46 You've been running around shaking hands with everybody.
00:43:50 Marion is an Egyptian athlete.
00:43:52 And here in Egypt, she is a celebrity.
00:43:54 A bit like your fiancee, Akhmed El-Gendi.
00:43:57 Not nearly as close as that.
00:43:59 To be fair, I can't disagree with you on that.
00:44:01 He is literally a celebrity here.
00:44:03 Right.
00:44:04 Won Egypt's first ever pentathlon medal at the Olympic Games.
00:44:08 So he's very popular out here.
00:44:09 But back to the action.
00:44:12 Patrick's versus Changwei Tse.
00:44:15 Changwei Tse, as well.
00:44:17 He still has a chance.
00:44:18 He's got a 2.79, I'd say.
00:44:22 And really needs to get a run in.
00:44:25 And a good run.
00:44:26 He's got a good touch there.
00:44:28 Yeah, and again, it's not all about the podium.
00:44:31 It's about points.
00:44:32 Exactly.
00:44:33 And position yourself at a better ranking when it comes to the Olympic Games.
00:44:47 Changwei Tse hasn't qualified for the Olympics yet.
00:44:51 His teammate, Hong Taichung, has.
00:44:53 So there's only one more slot left for the Queen.
00:44:56 Team Huaqing has qualified the last couple of seasons.
00:44:59 Yeah, we haven't seen them.
00:45:01 Fourth in Tokyo.
00:45:02 No, probably.
00:45:03 And the spot with the 11 points is the fourth place.
00:45:07 I think you'd rather fourth than fifth, though.
00:45:09 So, you know, we talk about fourth.
00:45:10 I think I'd rather fifth.
00:45:12 Really?
00:45:13 Fourth stings a bit.
00:45:14 We're that close to the podium and they're just missing out.
00:45:17 As an athlete yourself, you must have finished fourth in various competitions.
00:45:21 Yeah, stings.
00:45:22 Stings? You'd rather fifth than fourth?
00:45:24 I'd rather first.
00:45:26 If I'm picking.
00:45:29 But yeah, Emiliano Hernandez from Mexico already secured his spot at the Olympic Games.
00:45:43 Coming unstuck in the riding, not able to pick up those two points.
00:45:47 And he is now a point closer to podium time.
00:45:53 So there we go.
00:45:58 Eliminated in the riding.
00:46:00 Almost close to the top.
00:46:02 And Marion's out in favour of the gold.
00:46:05 Never gonna let me off the hook.
00:46:09 Never.
00:46:10 [Laughs]
00:46:11 Right, here we go.
00:46:20 Feo.
00:46:21 He's got two wins so far for Feo.
00:46:33 And now, Chef is looking for that aid. Changwan Seo is ready for his counterattack.
00:46:39 And it looks like Hungary has won.
00:46:42 Chef stops Changwan Seo in his pieces.
00:46:46 Had two wins.
00:46:48 Changwan Seo could be dangerous in this current position.
00:46:56 He had a clear run in the ride so moved up a couple spots.
00:47:01 Made up quite a few points there, didn't he?
00:47:04 Up next, Pierre de Jardin.
00:47:14 Here we go.
00:47:21 The French athlete.
00:47:24 If he wins this, it'll be an all-French Master of Ballet.
00:47:27 Chef is the one who wins his name so far.
00:47:29 Two extra points to the Hungarian score.
00:47:32 Into the final ten seconds of this bout.
00:47:40 Chef needs to get a touch soon and he does.
00:47:43 Doubles his score.
00:47:45 Four points for Chef.
00:47:47 He is slowly going about his business here.
00:47:50 He moves into the top ten.
00:47:53 31 points off the lead in Ballet Chef.
00:47:56 Keeping an eye on him.
00:47:59 He could be trouble for the other athletes as the competition goes by.
00:48:02 He's got points here.
00:48:04 Yeah, we've only got four wins now.
00:48:07 Far off from that podium.
00:48:10 It is a tight final for sure but we say hello to Jean-Baptiste Mouchier.
00:48:23 Hang on a minute.
00:48:24 No, it wasn't.
00:48:26 It was Gonzalo Torporo-Seguin.
00:48:30 Pierre de Zalvato and Jenson Brent on stage.
00:48:33 It's Jep versus Mouchier.
00:48:35 Two very good runners.
00:48:38 It feels like it could be a useful bout for both of them.
00:48:43 Jep makes it green and a right.
00:48:45 Jep for the roll here.
00:48:48 He's picked up six points.
00:48:50 It's all good. He's got an extra touch in the penalty.
00:48:52 He's got a breaking ground and he moves into the top ten.
00:48:55 Clear eight points.
00:48:58 Richard Boretsky up next in the Hungarian battle.
00:49:17 Time for a new ghost to Boretsky.
00:49:30 It's clock ticks down.
00:49:31 These athletes obviously trust each other before they know each other.
00:49:35 Boretsky tries to go down low, get a good touch, doesn't get it.
00:49:38 Balašek is looking for that eight and beautiful touch by Balašek there.
00:49:42 Four victories now for Jep.
00:49:44 He's now on eight points.
00:49:46 That's the highest we've had this weekend, the joint highest we've had this whole week.
00:49:54 Balašek is good in here.
00:49:56 He's picked up eight points and now it's time to get really serious for him.
00:50:01 He's moving his way up the rankings nicely.
00:50:10 Lukasz Kutowski.
00:50:16 Four wins for Jep.
00:50:18 Can he make it double figures?
00:50:20 Lukasz Kutowski will do his best to stop him.
00:50:23 And Jep's done it again.
00:50:25 Wow.
00:50:26 He's on fire.
00:50:27 Yeah.
00:50:28 Ten points now for Jep who moves up into seventh place.
00:50:32 This is really actually, I'm not exaggerating here, these are really, really important points.
00:50:39 If he gets a couple more wins, he's going to move into the top five.
00:50:42 And I honestly think Balašek is a real medal threat here.
00:50:50 The young Egyptian, Muhtas Mohamed.
00:50:52 He needs to get back on his feet.
00:50:54 He's got the crowd cheering behind him.
00:50:57 The crowd has that element of pushing you forward.
00:51:02 It gives you a bit more courage.
00:51:04 But again, only time will tell if Balašek will be able to catch up and if he does catch up, the crowd goes wild.
00:51:11 The crowd didn't seem to mind, did they?
00:51:13 And that move, Muhtas Mohamed back up above Jep.
00:51:18 Jep will be fine with that, by the way.
00:51:20 Ten extra points gone from 5.05 to 5.15.
00:51:23 And he's now moving to 25 points off the lead.
00:51:27 I don't think Jep's the fastest swimmer in the world, but it's OK.
00:51:43 Shalaboum next up on the stage.
00:51:46 Hungary versus Egypt once again.
00:51:49 Shalaboum quietly going about his business in this competition.
00:51:54 It's nice to be in the riding.
00:51:59 Commits himself a good time.
00:52:03 Mohamed's OK. I think he caught him in the neck or in the head.
00:52:07 Which he wouldn't want to get hurt.
00:52:09 [INAUDIBLE]
00:52:29 And he'll show up next with Mohamed Alain.
00:52:32 Who hadn't been on the podium last year and who's looking to do the same this year.
00:52:37 He's got work to do, hasn't he?
00:52:39 He didn't get the best pride. It's 2.79.
00:52:42 Mohamed Chabane really could do with a little run.
00:52:44 He's a very good fencer, Mohamed Chabane.
00:52:46 You'd back him to win this bout.
00:52:48 But listen, Shalaboum's a great fencer too.
00:52:51 And he's on form here, having won his previous bout.
00:52:54 Let's see if Chabane can turn things around in his favour and get his missing Egyptian medal.
00:53:04 [INAUDIBLE]
00:53:30 Mohamed Chabane.
00:53:40 Versus Valentin Bello.
00:53:42 Two times world champion.
00:53:44 With a 2.93 in the riding.
00:54:02 So Valentin Bello looking for that touch.
00:54:04 He's got to go down low. Doesn't get it. Mohamed Chabane's ready for it.
00:54:08 Taking the high line.
00:54:11 Who's it going to be?
00:54:13 And it goes for the flush and gets it.
00:54:15 Good move out from Valentin Bello.
00:54:18 Chabane just with the long wind.
00:54:20 And that moves up into fifth place.
00:54:23 Another win would put him above Charlie Brown.
00:54:27 [INAUDIBLE]
00:54:43 So Charlie Brown against Valentin Bello is also Charlie Brown's birthday.
00:54:50 We have a couple of birthday buddies.
00:54:57 It's a popular day for the Pentathlon birthday today.
00:54:59 Charlie Brown, Patrick Dogg celebrating their birthdays.
00:55:06 Yeah, Valentin Bello on the left, on the right, sorry, with the French grip.
00:55:12 Left handed.
00:55:14 He's looking for his first point up on this bonus round.
00:55:20 He tries to go for an eight but goes for a flush and is letting it get to the next dash.
00:55:24 Celebrate his birthday.
00:55:26 [INAUDIBLE]
00:55:49 Yeah, he's quickish, isn't he?
00:55:51 I wouldn't say he's lightning fast but quick enough.
00:55:58 I think he'll more consolidate his score rather than losing.
00:56:02 Yeah, so another Egyptian up on the piece to Ahmed Hamad.
00:56:08 It would be nice if Hamad was to go up against Ahmed El-Ghendi.
00:56:12 But Charlie Brown will say, no, it's my birthday, I'm staying up here as long as I can.
00:56:19 I'm down versus Ahmed.
00:56:21 Hamad really putting pressure on Brown.
00:56:24 Fast, he goes for a flush, doesn't get it and no touch.
00:56:27 14 to go.
00:56:30 [INAUDIBLE]
00:56:35 Yeah, time priority goes to Ahmed Hamad if the clock ticks down.
00:56:38 14 seconds on the clock.
00:56:42 Charlie Brown tries to entice his opponent.
00:56:46 His opponent is backing away.
00:56:49 [INAUDIBLE]
00:56:51 With the flush in the crowd goes wild again.
00:56:55 All Egyptian bouts coming up next.
00:56:58 Ahmed El-Ghendi versus Ahmed Hamad.
00:57:02 Come on, Maryam, you can talk through this one.
00:57:04 Yeah, I'm good, I'm good.
00:57:05 It's just the riding.
00:57:07 Still recovering.
00:57:09 It's nerve-wracking, isn't it, watching somebody you love on a horse that was eliminating the previous rider.
00:57:15 We get it.
00:57:17 We'll give you that one.
00:57:20 You've got to stay with us for this one.
00:57:22 Yeah, I'm with you.
00:57:24 Ahmed El-Ghendi up against his teammate, Ahmed Hamad.
00:57:28 Two very strong athletes who are up against each other at the last Olympics in Tokyo.
00:57:33 You're used to this by now.
00:57:34 You've been commentating for long enough to not let your fiancé distract you.
00:57:40 Here we go, Ahmed El-Ghendi versus Ahmed Hamad.
00:57:43 Two Egyptians. There's going to be big cheers no matter what happens here.
00:57:48 El-Ghendi is in second place overall in the live standings.
00:57:56 Ahmed Hamad with one victory to his name so far.
00:57:59 Yeah, 10 seconds on the clock.
00:58:01 And El-Ghendi gets it.
00:58:04 Nice touch there. I think those two have done each other quite a lot.
00:58:15 Again, in second place, I should say, Marvin Dux.
00:58:19 I'm sorry, in third place, Marvin Dux in second place.
00:58:32 And also Kamil Kasprzak, the Polish athlete in this final.
00:58:43 Kasprzak got a perfect score in Rally, didn't he?
00:59:01 So, El-Ghendi looking to make it two victories.
00:59:05 Kasprzak gets down low, gets the touch on his foot.
00:59:12 And Kasprzak in first place and extends his lead.
00:59:19 You see Christopher Papp a couple of minutes time.
00:59:22 Let's see what his vocabulary is like. He was eliminated after being top. It's a bit hard to take in an Olympic year.
00:59:51 25 seconds to go. Marvin Dux versus Kamil Kasprzak.
00:59:55 Kasprzak with one victory to his name so far.
00:59:58 Marvin Dux with the priority.
01:00:02 15 seconds to go. Kasprzak advancing.
01:00:06 Marvin Dux buying himself some time.
01:00:08 Tries to turn the defense into attack.
01:00:10 And he leaves himself open. Kasprzak gets a second victory.
01:00:14 And that leaves the toughest guy ever stronger.
01:00:20 So two wins for Kasprzak.
01:00:24 Defeat the dog.
01:00:26 And now has Christopher Papp to beat.
01:00:29 He got four points here if he was to win.
01:00:32 But it's a competition over.
01:00:35 Four Papps lost 300 points.
01:00:42 Which is equivalent to four minutes.
01:00:45 There's nothing you can do. If you're eliminated from Rally, you're done.
01:00:48 Game over.
01:00:51 Sadly for Christopher Papp.
01:00:59 Oh, and Papp does it.
01:01:03 Celebrates. He's a lovely guy, Christopher Papp.
01:01:05 Sorry to see that his competition has come unstuck. But he did get the extra win and picked up the extra four points.
01:01:19 And now Papp turns around in celebration.
01:01:24 Not his day.
01:01:25 But still looking to find positives.
01:01:29 In an otherwise difficult situation.
01:01:32 But he does the fencing bonus round.
01:01:35 It's a consolation prize.
01:01:38 Kasprzak leads by 11 points over Marvin Dogman.
01:01:41 Marvin Dogman is not the quickest swimmer.
01:01:43 So he's going to lose some ground.
01:01:45 And Agmelo again. He is a quick swimmer.
01:01:47 Charlie Brown is not too bad in the pool.
01:01:49 He's in fourth place. Hamad in fifth.
01:01:51 Bello in sixth.
01:01:52 Mohamed in seventh place.
01:01:53 Jeff in eighth.
01:01:54 And Shababou in ninth place.
01:01:59 In tenth is Richard Boretsky and Jean-Baptiste Mousser both sharing 510 points.
01:02:04 Lucas Kutovsky is in the 12th place.
01:02:06 13th is Mohamed Shaban.
01:02:08 Mateusz Lutz in 14th.
01:02:09 Pierre de Jourdin in 15th place.
01:02:12 Chang-Lang Tseo in 16th.
01:02:13 Emiliano Hernandez in 17th place.
01:02:15 Christopher Papp rounding off the scores.
01:02:18 He's in 18th place.
01:02:20 That concludes our coverage of the fencing bonus round.
01:02:26 Let's check out the highlights before we move over to the pool.

01:02:40 [Music]
01:02:57 [Music]
01:03:00 [Music]
01:03:10 So, welcome back to UIPM TV.
01:03:20 I am Maryam Ahmed and we are here in Cairo for the first World Cup of this 2024 season.
01:03:27 We are done with the bonus round and let's just take a look and see how things move over to the pool.
01:03:33 It's a short one-minute walk for the athletes and coaches where they'll be swimming 200 meters freestyle.
01:03:40 A score of 250 points for 2 minutes 30 and of course the athletes will go well below that.
01:03:48 And every second you go below, you get two extra points added to your name.
01:03:55 And it's a nice breezy day here in Cairo and things have been moving nicely.
01:04:03 We've had a couple of perfect scores in the ride.
01:04:07 A couple of 293s and one elimination from Christopher Papp who was leading the entire competition before that ride.
01:04:17 So, things stand now.
01:04:19 Three refusals will get you eliminated from the competition and put you out of medal contention.
01:04:26 And as you can see there, athletes and coaches are gathering by the pool at the stands right now.
01:04:33 We will have three heats in this men's final.
01:04:37 Of course, the athletes will be positioned by the rank after the ranking round, bonus round and riding.
01:04:44 So, we will have the lower ranked athletes starting in heat number one and our highest ranked in heat number three.
01:04:52 But first, let's just move on to the poolside now with James and Patrick Dogg.
01:04:58 Back with birthday boy Patrick Dogg poolside this time.
01:05:02 Patrick, thanks again for joining us.
01:05:04 Competition is hotting up.
01:05:06 Firstly, Kasper Schaak is in first place in a very good position.
01:05:09 What's he like as an athlete? What's he like to compete against?
01:05:11 And do you think he could be the one that takes gold today?
01:05:14 I mean, I know him since he is a young athlete.
01:05:16 We had a lot of training camps in Poland where he's training and so I fenced him a lot of time.
01:05:21 I think he has not that much experience, but these are the most dangerous ones because they have no fear.
01:05:28 So, I think he has a pretty good chance to be second because my brother will win.
01:05:32 You think your brother is going to win, hey?
01:05:33 I mean, my brother has a really strong laser run.
01:05:35 Of course, there are a lot of strong runners around him and also behind Kasper Schaak.
01:05:39 Well, everything can happen, but my brother, he's mentally very strong and I think he can make it.
01:05:45 For context, for those of you who are new to the sport, Marvin Dogg is Patrick's brother.
01:05:50 We are poolside and the athletes are now making their way out of the changing room.
01:05:54 Obviously, no one sees that, but just how crazy is it when you come out of the fencing room, go into that changing room?
01:06:00 What's it like in there?
01:06:01 Paint us a picture of just how manic it is.
01:06:04 I mean, you have to get out of your fencing suit and jump in your swimming suit, which is really tight.
01:06:10 It takes about three, four, five minutes.
01:06:12 Then you're going to the pool, checking which heat you are, which lane you are, and then you're trying to race in your mind.
01:06:19 Going through the race, heating up your body a little bit, rotate your arms, your legs, stretch everything,
01:06:25 and then try to get in zone to jump into the pool for the race.
01:06:29 Does anybody talk to each other?
01:06:30 Are there conversations that happen or is everyone in their own little world at that point?
01:06:33 It depends on the athlete.
01:06:35 Some are more open and they maybe try to reduce their own nerves to just talk to each other and making some jokes.
01:06:43 Some of them are really into the zone.
01:06:45 They don't talk.
01:06:46 They have their goggles on, which are mirrored, and they don't see anything, just themselves.
01:06:51 We've got Charlie Brown, British athlete, in the background, throwing a medicine ball as hard as he can against the ground.
01:06:57 Talk to us about that exercise and what that helps with in the build-up to swimming.
01:07:00 This is also kind of warming up, doing fast motions with your arms to imitate the swimming.
01:07:08 By the way, it's also Charlie's birthday today.
01:07:10 Everyone say happy birthday to Charlie.
01:07:13 It's like a way of warming up.
01:07:15 It's everybody's birthday today, isn't it?
01:07:17 We ask a lot of athletes this question.
01:07:20 It's something we've always been curious about in the Cometry box, just in terms of how much effort you're putting into swimming.
01:07:26 I know yourself, swimming's not your strongest discipline, is it?
01:07:29 Taking that into account, you're trying to save energy for the laser run.
01:07:34 Do you hold back a little bit with swimming?
01:07:36 Yes, for sure.
01:07:37 If you go all out, your arms are so stiff, so sore, and 15 minutes after the race in the pool, you have to do the laser run, and you have to shoot.
01:07:44 It's so hard.
01:07:46 I think most of the athletes, they do 90, 95 percent in the pool.
01:07:49 They don't go all out.
01:07:51 They just reduce a little bit to have some energy left for the laser run.
01:07:56 If you are in swimming heat one, obviously it gives you a bit more time to prepare for the laser run.
01:08:00 Is there an advantage to that?
01:08:02 Yes, definitely an advantage.
01:08:03 I think you have more time to rest, and you can maybe push a little bit more in swimming, and be the same relaxed for the laser run as the others in heat three.
01:08:13 There's a little bit of an advantage, but you have a gap because of the disciplines before, so I don't know if you can really use that advantage to catch up in the laser run.
01:08:22 Arguably, then, would you rather be in seventh place overall rather than sixth place, because then you're in swimming heat earlier on, and it gives you more time.
01:08:29 Would you even take that into account in fencing bonus rounds?
01:08:32 It may not push as hard in fencing bonus rounds.
01:08:34 Do you see what I mean?
01:08:35 Are these the kind of tactics you think about?
01:08:37 I'm not thinking about doing the bonus round.
01:08:39 I just try to get every second, and if I have an opportunity, going from seven to six was a touch.
01:08:45 I always think about going from six to five to four or something like that.
01:08:48 That's what's in the athlete's mind, and we're not thinking about going seven or six to being in heat two or heat three.
01:08:55 Maybe it's something you could think about going forward.
01:08:57 Maybe this is a tactic you could employ.
01:08:59 Maybe later.
01:09:00 I haven't thought about it until now, but it's definitely a thing because this extra three, four, five minutes will give you some extra rest before the laser run.
01:09:10 Listen, we'll hope to see you back in action again in Ankara, of course, next World Cup, and hopefully see you in the final.
01:09:16 Maybe we'll grab some merch to do again later.
01:09:18 Patrick, thank you for your time. Thank you for your expertise.
01:09:20 Back to you, Maryam, in the commentary box.
01:09:22 It's interesting to see just how these athletes go about their swimming.
01:09:28 There's a different approach to each athlete.
01:09:31 Some like to push more in the pool.
01:09:33 Some like to hold back a bit so they can put that effort into their laser run.
01:09:37 Patrick's one of those who likes to conserve a bit of energy in the swimming pool.
01:09:42 He says he goes about 90-95%, so not an all-out sprint for him.
01:09:47 He likes to utilize his strengths where he can, and he is a strong laser runner.
01:09:53 And so saving some energy on that is key.
01:09:57 And your shot there is Charlie Brown warming up with the medicine ball.
01:10:01 Of course, these athletes don't get the time to warm up in the pool.
01:10:05 They do that in the general warm-up before everything has commenced,
01:10:10 but once that competition starts, there really isn't much time to warm up.
01:10:14 It's basically just checking that your muscles are activated,
01:10:18 that you are present and focused on the competition.
01:10:22 And nutrition, of course, and hydration, which is something that's often overlooked.
01:10:29 This competition takes place over a 90-minute duration,
01:10:34 so your energy could become depleted by then.
01:10:37 So you have to make sure that you have your snacks, your carbs,
01:10:41 and of course your sports hydration drinks in between the disciplines.
01:10:48 So in your shot there is the team from Egypt, Ahmed Hamed,
01:10:52 just laying back ahead of his swimming.
01:10:57 He's not the fastest of swimmers, but he is currently occupying 5th overall at the moment.
01:11:07 And he might drop back after the swimming a bit,
01:11:11 but he is a strong laser runner, so hopefully he can recover from that.
01:11:17 Valentine Belot talked to him earlier this competition,
01:11:20 talked about how he was working with the women,
01:11:23 trying to improve their shooting,
01:11:27 and effectively he's acting as a coach and athlete at this point,
01:11:30 so it's a double job for him.
01:11:33 Michelle Kouyash in her shot there, just got gold this morning.
01:11:37 The golden girl here in Cairo, cheering on her athletes.
01:11:42 And we have James back in the box.
01:11:44 Looks very chilled now, doesn't she, Michelle Kouyash?
01:11:46 Job done for her, she's offering her advice to Bala Shep,
01:11:49 who's looking to get on the podium and make it a very successful week for the Hungarian team.
01:11:56 Valentine Belot just swinging away,
01:11:59 and the judges make their way to the side of the pool.
01:12:06 And let's take a look now at the athletes taking part in Swimming Heat 1.
01:12:14 Mohamed Chaban, you would not expect him to be down in 13th place at this point of the competition.
01:12:21 But every athlete has their off competition,
01:12:24 and Mohamed Chaban consistently seems to make that his event in Cairo.
01:12:28 He will, I'm sure, one day overcome the Cairo curse.
01:12:32 Should we call it that, the Cairo curse?
01:12:34 Don't put it in his head.
01:12:36 Let the athletes compete in this place.
01:12:39 Alright, we won't mention it to him.
01:12:41 We're going to watch this back. Mohamed Chaban makes his way out.
01:12:44 Nice guy, Mohamed Chaban.
01:12:46 We've had a few interviews with him before this event,
01:12:48 and just talking to him about the year he had last year.
01:12:56 And that's it. He's enjoying himself.
01:13:00 I love that.
01:13:02 Yeah, it's fun, isn't it?
01:13:04 Good for the athletes with a smile on their face.
01:13:06 Yeah, most of them are focused and not really showing that much emotion,
01:13:10 and I'm not feeling surprised, I suppose.
01:13:12 He did. Pierre de Jardin is one of two French athletes in swimming heat.
01:13:23 Looks like he's off to school with his backpack on there.
01:13:27 I'll pick you up later.
01:13:31 Chang Wen Sze.
01:13:37 He's got work to do, Chang Wen, hasn't he?
01:13:41 He was probably the most exciting to watch from the semifinal, wasn't he?
01:13:45 Milano Hernandez.
01:13:53 Makes his way out onto the side of the course.
01:14:00 And Christopher Patt.
01:14:02 Do you know what? We just saw Christopher Patt poolside.
01:14:06 They wished Patrick a happy birthday, and both me and Patrick said we're really sorry about what happened to you.
01:14:10 "Oh, look, it happens. Don't worry. No big deal."
01:14:14 I said to him, "You've won enough gold here. We're going to let someone else have one."
01:14:18 I think he's not too worried. This is still the first competition of the season,
01:14:21 so he has time to-- or competitions, should I say, to make that up.
01:14:30 Here we go, six athletes of heat number one.
01:14:38 So here we go. Up and running.
01:14:42 Heat number one of three.
01:14:46 Eyes on lane number four, Matthew Lutz.
01:14:49 Lane number seven, Emilio Hernandez.
01:14:58 And here we go, seven athletes of heat number one.
01:15:03 And here we go, seven athletes of heat number one.
01:15:06 And here we go, seven athletes of heat number one.
01:15:09 And here we go, seven athletes of heat number one.
01:15:12 And here we go, seven athletes of heat number one.
01:15:15 And here we go, seven athletes of heat number one.
01:15:18 And here we go, seven athletes of heat number one.
01:15:21 And here we go, seven athletes of heat number one.
01:15:24 So, Chabane is slightly pulling away.
01:15:29 As you can see in the back of your shot there,
01:15:31 it looks like Emiliano Hernandez is fighting for that top spot as well.
01:15:39 See the split times behind Chabane.
01:15:42 Matthew Lutz, 0.5 behind, Emiliano Hernandez, 0.7 behind.
01:15:51 Halfway through this race, and Chabane is putting everything into this.
01:15:58 Really wants to achieve a medal in this home event.
01:16:02 It's going to be tough in here, I've got to be honest with you.
01:16:06 But he gets to his turn at 1.30, looking like a pretty quick time here.
01:16:11 So 1.30, he's really lost a couple of three seconds.
01:16:18 That's one there, he's lost three seconds,
01:16:21 but if you look at it, it's roughly 30 seconds every 50 meters.
01:16:26 So we have time of around 2.06, that's a little bit less.
01:16:32 A bit of pressure here from Matek Lutz.
01:16:37 It's going to be neck and neck between those two,
01:16:40 who will take the fastest time.
01:16:43 Very close indeed.
01:16:45 Oh my goodness me, look at that.
01:16:47 Absolutely dead on, the Hannes Chabane and Matek Lutz share the victory.
01:16:52 2.06.16, Hernandez in third place. I've never seen that before.
01:16:57 I haven't seen that in pentathlon before, to be honest.
01:17:02 It doesn't make a difference, but they are absolutely there.
01:17:05 He doesn't know his time, he wants to know his time.
01:17:08 2.06.16, Matek Lutz is a real personality, isn't he?
01:17:12 He needs to grapple over them at some point.
01:17:15 He's not too long on the European TV, he'll pass around the world.
01:17:20 The scenery plays in on that first swimming heat,
01:17:39 absolutely in sync, both touching at the same time.
01:17:43 Let's have a look at the results after swimming.
01:17:50 Mohamed Chabane, top of the pile.
01:17:52 Matek Lutz in second place, Chang Wang Seo in third.
01:17:55 18 seconds behind even Mohamed Chabane.
01:17:59 I think it's fair to say Chang Wang Seo will not be meddling in this,
01:18:02 nor will Emiliano Hernandez.
01:18:08 We'll have that fight for rankings though, as we move on to swimming heat number two.
01:18:12 We've got Mohamed Alashev Chabane, Richard Borecki, John Luttys,
01:18:16 and Lukas Gachovsky.
01:18:19 So, first round is for Mitesh Mohamed.
01:18:29 He's taken four Egyptians in this final.
01:18:33 He could have been four, but...
01:18:36 Mohamed Aladdin, we haven't been disqualified.
01:18:39 It's an error he won't be doing again.
01:18:45 Yeah, definitely.
01:18:48 Alashev out next, swimming lane number four.
01:18:57 Swimming his arms, getting ready for that 200m freestyle.
01:19:05 Alongside him is teammate Shababu.
01:19:09 Richard Borecki out next, three Hungarians next to each other.
01:19:26 This is a Hungarian heavy heat, isn't it?
01:19:30 Who wins, who finishes higher out of those three, I think, is Alashev.
01:19:35 My money, though. Shababu.
01:19:40 [applause]
01:19:43 And swimming lane number eight, representing Poland,
01:19:51 [unclear]
01:19:54 Lukas Gachovsky.
01:20:05 So, John Vartis and Moshia made his way out on the pool,
01:20:08 and Lukas Gachovsky is the last athlete out,
01:20:11 swimming in lane number eight.
01:20:14 He's already the sixth athlete of heat number two.
01:20:18 Here we go, heat number two.
01:20:29 He's second of three heats in this final.
01:20:33 [unclear]
01:20:36 But first, all eyes on this heat.
01:20:39 We expect lane number five, Shababu, to be the fastest of these athletes.
01:20:45 Again, I'm not sure what kind of tactic he's going to be adopting today,
01:20:49 but it seems to me that he is the quickest.
01:20:53 So, Shababu and Alashev.
01:21:00 Alashev.
01:21:03 Richard Bratzky seems to be going together at this point.
01:21:09 In turn.
01:21:12 [unclear]
01:21:15 Racing into the lead.
01:21:18 Muhammad is taking back the lead of this race.
01:21:21 He is at the bottom of your screen.
01:21:29 Twice today, Dennis, is a really quick first 100 meters, actually.
01:21:32 We're going to get a time close to two minutes.
01:21:35 So, here's the turn from Lukas Muhammad, 58.62.
01:21:39 Shababu and Richard Bratzky.
01:21:42 A bit further down.
01:21:45 Lukas Muhammad really pushing hard in the pool here.
01:21:48 Richard Bratzky is doing well today with Shababu.
01:21:51 Going into the quick loop for two swimmers.
01:21:53 Lukas Muhammad is flying here, isn't he?
01:21:55 He's in seventh place overall,
01:21:57 seems spurred on by the local crowd here.
01:22:00 They're over to the very front.
01:22:06 Trying to keep up. This is the final turn.
01:22:09 Into the final 50 meters of this race.
01:22:14 It's all coming down to this last sprint from
01:22:24 the young Egyptian who's making a name for himself here in Cairo.
01:22:28 Lukas Muhammad into those final few strides.
01:22:33 The crowd are loving it.
01:22:35 Muhammad enjoying his moment here in the spotlight in Cairo.
01:22:38 It's a time of 2.02.56.
01:22:41 Shababu with the strong finish.
01:22:43 Expected him to win it, but he comes home in second.
01:22:46 Richard Bratzky takes third.
01:22:49 Strong swim from the young Egyptian.
01:22:56 Lukas Muhammad the under-19 world champion.
01:23:01 Fighting his way to the top four Egyptians
01:23:08 national league here in Turkey.
01:23:10 He's done so beautifully here in Cairo.
01:23:13 So we're in the final 10 of our second swimming heats.
01:23:22 The tension is building.
01:23:24 Emiliano Hernandez has come out of the pool
01:23:28 and is heading towards the shooting range.
01:23:32 Lukas Muhammad with a big fist raise.
01:23:38 Let's have a look at how that leaves things.
01:23:40 Muhtasim Muhammad moves nine points ahead of Shababu.
01:23:44 Bratzky in third, Balash in fifth.
01:23:46 Muhammad Shaban in fifth place.
01:23:48 That is provisional standings.
01:23:51 We still have our sixth highest ranked athletes still to compete.
01:23:56 Muhammad could drop down a few places as could Marvin Dogtel,
01:24:01 the quickest swimmers.
01:24:02 And Kasparov who's in first place.
01:24:05 Also not the quickest swimmer.
01:24:07 And you know what that means?
01:24:08 That means the pack bunches up nicely for the ladies' round,
01:24:11 which is what we like now.
01:24:13 Kamil Kasparov, Marvin Dogtel, Fakhimurad Elgendi,
01:24:17 Charlie Brown, Akhmed Kamel and Valentin Belou
01:24:20 contesting the final swimming heat.
01:24:23 First out is our current leader, Kamil Kasparov.
01:24:30 Off he goes. Raises a fist up high.
01:24:35 Everything's underwhelming after that Czech entrance we had.
01:24:39 Yeah.
01:24:40 Marvin Dogtel, who Patrick has tipped for victory.
01:24:50 He's going to have to have a good laser on though because this
01:24:54 swimming heat will push him further down the rankings.
01:24:59 Fakhimurad Elgendi, I think, will be leading after this swimming heat.
01:25:05 Possibly with Charlie Brown close behind him.
01:25:07 But Fakhimurad Elgendi, he is one of the best athletes in the world right now.
01:25:13 And he is qualified for the Olympic Games.
01:25:19 Charles Brown.
01:25:26 Birthday boy.
01:25:29 He has his pool kit on.
01:25:33 And shoes and everything.
01:25:35 Akhmed Hamad.
01:25:39 Yeah, but slower in the pool.
01:25:41 Has to push maybe a bit to stay with that leading pack.
01:25:46 A prediction here in front of the crowd.
01:25:52 Valentin Belou.
01:25:54 And that's out.
01:25:56 Valentin Belou.
01:25:58 So there you have it.
01:26:12 The six athletes leading the competition at the moment.
01:26:16 Things might change after this heat.
01:26:20 The final heat here in Cairo ahead of the laser run.
01:26:25 So final swimming heats before we build up to coverage of the laser run.
01:26:33 And off we go.
01:26:37 Swimming heat three is underway.
01:26:41 And the athletes in this heat will determine the top places heading into the laser run.
01:26:49 Plenty of twists and turns in this competition yet to come.
01:26:53 And things are going to get very exciting soon.
01:26:56 We're going to conclude the swimming and decide the order.
01:26:59 As into that first turn storms Ahmed Elgendi.
01:27:03 First turn shoots off underwater.
01:27:06 And Elgendi is looking pumped for this one.
01:27:08 Talk to us about Ahmed Elgendi.
01:27:10 You know him better than anyone.
01:27:11 What's his swimming like?
01:27:12 What's he like training for swimming?
01:27:15 Ahmed usually needs like a very heavy load in comparison to other athletes.
01:27:21 He needs to swim a lot in order to score better.
01:27:24 And he was a previous swimmer before he got into pentathlon and won a couple medals there as well.
01:27:29 So he's an accomplished swimmer.
01:27:31 Again, adopting that method of trying to pull back a bit with the swimming given this new format.
01:27:36 And giving a bit more in the laser run.
01:27:39 But as of now, he seems to be leading the race.
01:27:42 Not too far behind is Charlie Brown.
01:27:45 Also coming from swimming background.
01:27:47 And again, he's looking pumped for the third or fourth tip in for gold.
01:27:54 Because he's such a consistent athlete.
01:27:56 And he's performing in front of his home crowd here.
01:27:58 Pulling away from Charlie Brown.
01:28:02 He almost lifts himself out of the water, doesn't he?
01:28:05 Just an aggressive swimming style.
01:28:07 There's the tumble turn.
01:28:08 And he's going to get as close as he possibly can to two minutes here.
01:28:13 He's flying through this final 50 meters.
01:28:16 Ahmed El Gendy looks pumped for this one.
01:28:19 Who knows that Olympic qualification will await him this year.
01:28:25 And approaching in the final few meters.
01:28:29 Ahmed El Gendy.
01:28:31 How close to two minutes can the Egyptian get?
01:28:37 It's going to be a few seconds over.
01:28:39 It's a 2.03 from Ahmed El Gendy.
01:28:43 That is a brilliant swim.
01:28:44 He's three seconds above his qualification time.
01:28:47 And Ahmed El Gendy will, in my opinion, probably take the race lead here.
01:28:52 And that was a very, very good swim from Ahmed El Gendy.
01:29:07 And I'll be happy with that heading into the Laser Run.
01:29:10 Of course, this group has the disadvantage of having the least time in between both disciplines.
01:29:16 You can already see the athletes from group number one and two warming up here in the Laser Run arena by our commentary box.
01:29:26 Yeah, the athletes are starting to storm through now.
01:29:31 They're crowded on their way through.
01:29:33 And we'll be live trackside from the...
01:29:37 ...Tafwan Laser Run arena shortly.
01:29:42 We'll have an interview with Jan Koeff to come as well.
01:29:44 Let's take a look back at the highlights from that final swimming heat then, which was won by none other than Ahmed El Gendy.
01:29:53 And we'll see the standings as well.
01:30:00 Yeah, this promises to be an interesting race for sure and gives us that excitement that we've been waiting for all day.
01:30:10 We've had that in the women's this morning.
01:30:13 And we're looking forward to the men's.
01:30:16 Let's take a look at the standings then.
01:30:18 Kamil Kasprzyk is joint top with Ahmed El Gendy.
01:30:22 Just when you thought this competition couldn't get any more exciting.
01:30:26 Moutas Mohamed and Charles Brown both nine seconds further back.
01:30:31 Marvin Dogg in third place.
01:30:32 Kat Shababoum in fifth place.
01:30:36 Richard Beresky in seventh.
01:30:37 Valentin Boulou and Balazs Jep.
01:30:40 Balazs Jep just 27 seconds off the lead.
01:30:41 This is all still to play for.
01:30:44 A dramatic pentathlon final coming right up, folks.
01:30:48 Mohamed Shaban has moved up a little bit and still in with a chance of getting himself on the podium.
01:30:51 Ahmed's not far off as well.
01:30:53 Jean-Baptiste Messier, we know, has a good Laser Run.
01:30:55 Lukasz Kotowski could move up the rankings.
01:30:58 Mateusz Lukasz, Chang Wang Tso, Pierre Jardin, Emilio Hernandez.
01:31:02 And then Christopher Paz down in 18th place.
01:31:05 That concludes the swimming.
01:31:07 Let's take a look at the replays.
01:31:10 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:31:13 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:31:16 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:31:19 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:31:22 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:31:26 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:31:30 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:31:34 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:31:37 (upbeat music)
01:31:39 (upbeat music)
01:31:42 (upbeat music)
01:32:11 - And that concludes the swimming action here in Cairo
01:32:15 for the men's final.
01:32:17 We had some people move up and down the standings.
01:32:19 Ahmed Aginzi made his way up into joint first place
01:32:22 with Camille Kasprzak.
01:32:24 Couple of athletes dropped down,
01:32:26 such as Marvin Dogg and a couple of other athletes,
01:32:30 Ahmed Hamid as well.
01:32:32 But here's a look at how we transitioned
01:32:33 from the pool to the laser.
01:32:35 And of course, these athletes have five times 600 meters,
01:32:38 which will have three kilometers to run for this laser run.
01:32:42 Four shooting series, five lights each.
01:32:45 And then the athletes run all the way
01:32:48 to the start finish straight
01:32:50 where we will crown our top three athletes
01:32:53 here in the first World Cup of this 2024 Olympic season.
01:32:58 This race promises to be exciting, so stay tuned folks.
01:33:04 As we try to get you closer to the action
01:33:07 in a moment's time where James will have athletes lined up
01:33:11 and we'll talk about the transition a bit
01:33:15 in the athletes' eyes.
01:33:17 As we wait for that, the crowd is making their way
01:33:22 out from the pool and we go to James.
01:33:27 - Yeah, we're here trackside with Yankov.
01:33:30 Yank, good to see you, my friend.
01:33:31 Sadly, obviously you're not in today's final,
01:33:34 but we're building up, of course, to laser run.
01:33:36 It's a crucial moment for athletes, isn't it?
01:33:38 As they try their best, obviously,
01:33:40 to get themselves as prepared as they possibly can
01:33:42 for laser run, a crucial warmup period, this.
01:33:45 - Yeah, exactly, especially the transition
01:33:47 from the swimming to running.
01:33:49 It's one of the hardest in our sport right now.
01:33:52 And so if you push a little bit too hard in the swim,
01:33:55 then the first shooting might get a little tricky.
01:33:57 So we'll see how the guys go.
01:34:00 - All these conversations about lactic acid,
01:34:03 people conserving energy.
01:34:05 How do you deal with that transition
01:34:07 from swimming to the laser run?
01:34:10 - Especially for me, it's a little bit harder, I guess,
01:34:13 since I'm a little bit older than the rest of the guys here.
01:34:16 But yeah, all of us have to deal with it.
01:34:19 So I try to leave a little bit out in the swimming pool
01:34:24 that I swim a little bit easier
01:34:26 than I would do a full maximum speed
01:34:29 so I can shoot later really well.
01:34:34 It doesn't always work out, but sometimes it does.
01:34:39 - Good crop of Czech athletes.
01:34:42 Yourself, Martin Vlach and Matej going well here as well.
01:34:45 What are you expecting from his laser run today?
01:34:47 - Matej is a big surprise of the season.
01:34:49 He's doing really well, especially in training.
01:34:52 So you can see how he's pushing hard
01:34:53 and getting better every day.
01:34:55 And now you can really tell
01:34:56 that he deserved to be in the final.
01:34:58 So I'm expecting him to move a little bit more forward
01:35:01 because he ran really well in the semifinals,
01:35:04 so I expect the same right now.
01:35:06 But the field is super strong in the Combine,
01:35:08 so we'll see how he does.
01:35:10 - It's hard to bet against Ahmed El Gendy as well, isn't it?
01:35:13 You know, he's such a good athlete,
01:35:14 an Olympic silver medalist.
01:35:16 Here in his home event as well,
01:35:17 I think he stands a very,
01:35:18 he's joint top now as well, isn't he?
01:35:20 - Yeah, exactly.
01:35:21 I mean, the whole Egyptian squad is incredible,
01:35:24 especially in the Combine.
01:35:25 So all of them are really the ones to look out for.
01:35:30 And we'll see, we'll see.
01:35:31 It's gonna be an exciting final,
01:35:32 so I'm looking forward to it.
01:35:34 - Just finally, will we see you in Ankara?
01:35:37 Are you gonna make it to the next World Cup, you think?
01:35:39 - Yeah, yeah, I think we'll do as much as we need
01:35:41 because of the Olympic qualification system.
01:35:44 And hopefully I'll do a little bit better than here
01:35:46 and I'll make it to the final
01:35:47 and get to ride the horses
01:35:48 and enjoy the competition a little bit more.
01:35:51 - Jan, a pleasure as always talking to you, my friend.
01:35:53 Go well.
01:35:54 Back to you, Maryam, in the commentary box.
01:35:56 - Thanks, man. I appreciate it.
01:35:57 So Jan Koeff, one of the more experienced athletes
01:36:00 in the field, Czech athlete, of course,
01:36:02 here to support Matej Lukš, his fellow athlete,
01:36:06 who's been doing well.
01:36:08 It's his senior debut this year.
01:36:11 And so good luck to him, of course.
01:36:14 And yeah, he was just talking about how age plays a factor
01:36:18 in the swimming, how hard an athlete can go with the swimming
01:36:23 ahead of the laser run.
01:36:26 Older athletes might tend to go a bit slower in the pool
01:36:29 as lactic acid can build up faster in their system.
01:36:33 But yeah, we've had some amazing performances
01:36:38 throughout the day and the big show,
01:36:41 the final event is up next, the laser run.
01:36:45 And things are pretty tight as things stand at the moment.
01:36:49 We have Kamila Kasparčák and Achmad Ginzi on joint first,
01:36:54 starting at zero and then nine seconds back is Matej Mohamed
01:36:57 followed by Charles Brown, also at nine seconds.
01:37:00 So it is pretty tight.
01:37:03 Only nine seconds separating those top four athletes.
01:37:07 14 seconds behind them is Marvin Dogg,
01:37:10 also in a chance for a medal for sure.
01:37:12 Chava Bhum, 18 seconds behind.
01:37:14 Richard Bereczky, 22.
01:37:16 And just one second back, Valentin Bello in eighth place.
01:37:20 So it's all about the shooting at this point.
01:37:23 All these athletes are pretty good runners
01:37:25 and it's all about who can keep their composure in the shoot
01:37:28 and finish this race till the end
01:37:31 and hopefully add some points to their name
01:37:35 ahead of this very challenging season we're gonna have.
01:37:38 We have three more World Cups to go
01:37:42 and then it's World Cup final.
01:37:44 Then we have the World Champs.
01:37:47 Marvin Dogg in your shot there.
01:37:49 Marvin Dogg had a bit of a drop off after that
01:37:53 2019 season ahead of Tokyo Olympics
01:37:57 in terms of performance.
01:37:58 And managed to pick himself up last year
01:38:00 and got a medal in a World Cup.
01:38:04 I believe it was Bulgaria.
01:38:06 But yeah, it's all about picking yourself up.
01:38:10 These athletes are not backing down now.
01:38:13 It is the year to be at your top level.
01:38:17 So Marvin Dogg in the bright pink shoes there
01:38:21 and it's five minutes away
01:38:23 till we get to stream the laser run for you guys.
01:38:28 Ahonigin in your shot there starting in first
01:38:31 with Camille Kasperchuk as well.
01:38:35 - I thought for a second there about asking Christopher Patton
01:38:37 would mind doing an interview with us.
01:38:39 He's obviously busy warming up,
01:38:40 but he just looks so relaxed.
01:38:42 I just thought, maybe there's a chance,
01:38:44 but no, that wasn't the time to be asking him
01:38:49 for an interview, I don't think.
01:38:50 - It was nice to hear from Janka.
01:38:52 - Yeah.
01:38:53 - Czech team is obviously a good team, isn't it?
01:38:54 Martin Vlach is an excellent laser runner.
01:38:57 We've not enjoyed him so far this competition in the final,
01:39:01 but I'm sure we'll see him back again
01:39:02 with a vengeance in Ankara.
01:39:04 - Yeah, I mean, it's good to see the more experienced
01:39:07 athlete out here supporting the younger ones.
01:39:09 As we said, Matej Lukšić, this is his senior debut.
01:39:14 - I'm gonna push you for predictions, Marianne.
01:39:16 - Oh, my least favorite part.
01:39:19 Go ahead.
01:39:21 - We'll come back to you in a moment's time.
01:39:23 We are gonna focus on the birthday boy, Charlie Brown,
01:39:27 21 today, starting this race in fourth place.
01:39:31 Take a look at some of his statistics.
01:39:35 Date of birth, 2003, on this day, 21 years of age.
01:39:40 He's only had five World Cup starts.
01:39:45 World Championship bronze medal came at youth level.
01:39:47 Still looking for his first World Cup gold medal.
01:39:49 Silver medal or bronze medal.
01:39:51 In terms of how he compares against the others,
01:39:54 he's 2% below average in fencing,
01:39:56 3% above average in swimming,
01:39:57 5% above average in laser run.
01:39:59 He's got a good laser run,
01:40:00 and that could put him in a good position
01:40:02 as he tries to get his first podium finish here
01:40:06 in the Pentathlon World Cup in Cairo.
01:40:11 In terms of his starts versus his finishes,
01:40:15 he started in 32nd place in Dresden-Cai in Lithuania.
01:40:20 Finished at 11th.
01:40:21 That was at junior level, though,
01:40:22 in the World Championships in Bath.
01:40:26 - Started where he finished, basically.
01:40:27 - Yeah, so, yep.
01:40:29 I anticipate a good race here from Charlie,
01:40:32 but back to you, Marianne, with your predictions.
01:40:34 I wanna hear the top, I want you to put the top 10,
01:40:37 actually, top three predictions.
01:40:39 - Top three in no specific order.
01:40:41 - No, no, gold, silver, and bronze.
01:40:42 - In no specific order.
01:40:44 - In gold, silver, and bronze.
01:40:45 - Oh, it's gonna be a tough one, yeah.
01:40:47 - You don't wanna tempt fate, do you?
01:40:49 - No.
01:40:50 - Go on, tempt it.
01:40:52 Ahmed takes gold, come on, from this position.
01:40:54 - Yeah, I'd say Ahmed for gold.
01:40:58 - Talking of Ahmed El Gendy,
01:41:00 there he is at the shooting range.
01:41:03 Looks very, very on it today.
01:41:07 And this is why, 46 in the Olympic ranking,
01:41:12 six in the senior rankings, 17, just 17 World Cup starts.
01:41:17 It feels like more than that.
01:41:18 And from those 17, he's had seven World Championship medals,
01:41:22 two Olympic medals, one of which coming at the Youth Olympics,
01:41:25 one of which coming at the Senior Olympics,
01:41:27 and five World Cup medals, three of which were gold,
01:41:30 one of which came here in Cairo.
01:41:33 He has, of course, qualified for the Olympic Games.
01:41:39 He's 2% above average in the fencing,
01:41:42 6% above average in the swimming,
01:41:45 5% above average in laser run.
01:41:48 And he is, in terms of where he starts and finishes,
01:41:55 always doing better.
01:41:58 He is a very, very accomplished laser run athlete.
01:42:02 And Ahmed El Gendy is in a good position,
01:42:06 and both me and Mario predict him to be the winner
01:42:09 of this World Cup here in Cairo.
01:42:10 - I'm gonna push you for predictions, Max.
01:42:12 Who do you think is gonna be silver and bronze?
01:42:14 - Well, hang on, we've gotta get yours first.
01:42:16 You've only predicted gold.
01:42:17 (laughs)
01:42:18 - Wow, okay.
01:42:20 Do you know what, Mohtaz Mohammed has a really good shot.
01:42:23 He's really quick.
01:42:25 So I'd say he'd be on the podium.
01:42:27 Not sure where, though.
01:42:28 Maybe bronze, and I'd go for--
01:42:32 - Honestly, it's so hard to predict.
01:42:33 - Charles Brown second.
01:42:34 - It's so hard to predict,
01:42:35 because have a look at their start list.
01:42:37 27 seconds separates those top nine.
01:42:40 I mean, if everyone has a perfect race,
01:42:43 well, okay, it stays as it is.
01:42:45 I mean, in terms of ability, El Gendy wins it.
01:42:49 I would say, honestly, this is so hard to predict.
01:42:53 Marvin Dogg's dangerous from fifth place, that's for sure.
01:42:55 He could make up those five seconds, no trouble,
01:42:58 and get on the podium.
01:42:59 Boretsky below, yeah.
01:43:01 - It's tough.
01:43:02 - It's hard to predict any--
01:43:03 - No, but you have to.
01:43:04 - No, I don't.
01:43:05 - No, you don't.
01:43:06 (laughing)
01:43:09 - Looking further back, Mohamed Djibin could be impactful.
01:43:13 Jean-Baptiste Maria could be dangerous as well.
01:43:16 I think probably for Chang Wang Tso
01:43:18 and Emilio Hernandez, Pierre de Jardin.
01:43:20 Those leads could struggle a little bit
01:43:23 from there as well.
01:43:24 One minute until the start of this laser run.
01:43:31 Super Saturday here in Cairo.
01:43:35 - Yeah, nerves are building up.
01:43:36 Crowd is waiting to see who will be crowned
01:43:41 the winner of this first World Cup of the season.
01:43:44 It's kind of nerve-wracking for the athletes
01:43:49 to have an opening competition
01:43:51 that sets the mood for the entire season.
01:43:53 It's tough and we wish them all the best of luck.
01:43:58 - Yes, we really do.
01:44:00 It's been a fantastic day of fantastic action.
01:44:02 It's been a fantastic event here in Cairo.
01:44:05 And the athletes are just 20 seconds away
01:44:10 from the start of this race.
01:44:13 Five disciplines over the course of one day
01:44:18 and it all comes down to this.
01:44:21 The laser run here in Cairo.
01:44:24 And Ahmed El-Ghendi gets us underway.
01:44:27 Alongside him, Kamel Kaspaschak.
01:44:29 Can the Polish athlete keep pace
01:44:32 with the Olympic silver medalist?
01:44:35 Kamel Kaspaschak.
01:44:39 - We're live.
01:44:45 - We are live here for the laser run.
01:44:49 And here you can see the athletes.
01:44:54 For France, starting line.
01:44:56 Paula Cech for Hungary, starting 10 and 11.
01:44:59 Mohamed Shabah and Hamed for Egypt, 10 and 11.
01:45:02 Starting 12.
01:45:03 Joachim Florian for France, starting 13.
01:45:06 - So there you have our leaders, first and second.
01:45:11 Ahmed El-Ghendi and Kamel Kaspaschak.
01:45:13 Nothing separating those two.
01:45:15 - Lukasz for Szczykiew, starting 15.
01:45:20 (upbeat music)
01:45:22 - So El-Ghendi dominating these early stages.
01:45:28 I say dominating, it's probably a little bit harsh
01:45:32 on Kamel Kaspaschak.
01:45:34 There you can see Moutaz Mohamed.
01:45:36 He looks nervous, Moutaz Mohamed.
01:45:38 That's one thing I will say.
01:45:39 But also Charlie Brown is probably a little bit nervous,
01:45:41 looking for his first World Cup medal as well.
01:45:44 - Yeah, I'm sure both in such a good position to...
01:45:49 be on the podium here in Cairo.
01:45:51 But it's all eyes on the two who's gonna be first
01:45:54 and who's gonna be second,
01:45:55 going into their first shooting series.
01:45:58 Christopher Pate is off the line now.
01:46:00 - You must be super proud of Moutaz Mohamed, by the way.
01:46:02 The way he's gone about his competition here.
01:46:06 He was ninth in Cairo last year,
01:46:07 but he started in 10th, moved up to the top three.
01:46:09 No matter what happens, it's been a fantastic day
01:46:11 for that young Egyptian, isn't it?
01:46:13 - Yeah, absolutely.
01:46:13 Maybe even adds a bit of nerves to his race,
01:46:16 considering that he's never started on top leaderboard.
01:46:21 - So here we go.
01:46:22 Ahmed El-Ghendi approaching the shooting range now.
01:46:27 Hot in pursuit, Kamil Kasparchak.
01:46:31 And they both make their first.
01:46:34 El-Ghendi and Kasparchak trading blows here.
01:46:38 It's currently three apiece.
01:46:40 Kasparchak, oh, Kasparchak's away with a 9.95.
01:46:44 El-Ghendi a little bit slower there.
01:46:46 It's still a 12.56.
01:46:48 Who gets away in third place here.
01:46:52 Marvin Dog has arrived at the range as well.
01:46:54 Dog shooting quickly here.
01:46:55 Moutaz Mohamed with a great shoot, 11.42.
01:46:58 Charlie Brown struggling a little bit in the range here.
01:47:01 Marvin Dog just gets in under 10 seconds.
01:47:03 Valentin Belot brings himself back into medal contention
01:47:06 as the Shabba Boom.
01:47:07 Things are getting mixed up here.
01:47:08 Charlie Brown is having a slow first shoot.
01:47:10 Richard Boretsky is away.
01:47:12 Balashev is away.
01:47:13 And eventually Charlie Brown gets away,
01:47:15 but he is the athlete who misses out
01:47:18 on an opportunity there, Mariam.
01:47:20 Mariam's, I think, got a keen eye on where
01:47:27 Ahmed El-Ghendi is.
01:47:28 And that is the answer there.
01:47:30 He is, he certainly aren't, and that's okay.
01:47:33 And Moutaz Mohamed really did shoot well there.
01:47:37 But Marvin Dog, Valentin Belot, and Shabba Boom,
01:47:40 three huge athletes making their way around.
01:47:44 Moutaz Mohamed, you can see,
01:47:46 you can almost see his heart pumping.
01:47:49 Marvin Dog, Valentin Belot.
01:47:52 - Marvin Dog and Valentin Belot going neck and neck.
01:47:57 Might overtake Moutaz Mohamed,
01:48:00 considering they have a good shoot in the next one.
01:48:03 - And Ahmed El-Ghendi retakes the race lead.
01:48:06 So listen, by his standards, it was not the fastest shoot,
01:48:09 but still 13 seconds is a great shoot time.
01:48:12 Anything sub 10 is a fantastic shooting time.
01:48:15 And Ahmed El-Ghendi, the ever consistent athlete.
01:48:18 He has moved into the race lead once again.
01:48:20 Moutaz Mohamed holding on to third place as things stand,
01:48:23 but he's got three of the best athletes in the world
01:48:25 chasing him down.
01:48:27 Valentin Belot moves up into fourth place.
01:48:29 Marvin Dog in fifth place.
01:48:31 Shabba Boom ominously in sixth place.
01:48:34 That's your top six as things stand.
01:48:36 It's still close between El-Ghendi and Kasper Schach
01:48:39 as they approach the shooting range
01:48:41 for their second round of shooting.
01:48:43 Ahmed El-Ghendi will look to improve
01:48:44 on his previous shooting time.
01:48:46 Kamil Kasper Schach will look to try and get away quicker.
01:48:48 And it's a 7.24 from Ahmed El-Ghendi.
01:48:51 And that is the Ahmed El-Ghendi we know and love.
01:48:53 Kamil Kasper Schach with a 10.69.
01:48:56 That's a very good shoot time from him as well.
01:48:58 Can Moutaz Mohamed keep track?
01:49:00 And he does, a 9.28 for Moutaz Mohamed.
01:49:04 Things are heating up.
01:49:05 Shabba Boom is going quick here.
01:49:06 A 7.18 for Shabba Boom.
01:49:08 He moves up into fourth place.
01:49:10 This is going to be a tight race for him.
01:49:12 Banas Shepp with a 6.24.
01:49:15 My goodness me, this is crazy.
01:49:17 Look at these times.
01:49:18 This is just consistently brilliant.
01:49:20 I think Charles Brown got away quick that time as well.
01:49:22 He did.
01:49:23 But he's dropped down to ninth place.
01:49:25 So Charles Brown's ambitions for a medal now.
01:49:28 Possibly taking a bit of a blow.
01:49:29 Ahmed El-Ghendi-- sorry, Ahmed Hamed and Mohamed Shaban.
01:49:32 Ahmed El-Ghendi has built up a nice race lead here.
01:49:35 Halfway through the race at this point.
01:49:38 It's looking good for the Egyptians.
01:49:40 Mohamed in third, El-Ghendi in second.
01:49:44 Top three, well, they're separated by--
01:49:47 we're about to find out-- nine seconds.
01:49:51 The top three are separated by.
01:49:53 That is nothing, by the way.
01:49:55 Absolutely nothing.
01:49:56 One slip up in the shooting range
01:49:57 and things can change pretty quickly.
01:49:59 You have to back Ahmed El-Ghendi at this point.
01:50:02 He's got such experience in these high pressure situations.
01:50:05 The Olympic silver medalist, by the way.
01:50:08 And he is sprinting off down the distance.
01:50:12 Chased all the way by Kaspershak,
01:50:14 who's been absolutely superb in this final so far.
01:50:18 But Muhtasim Ahmed, dare I say, starting to catch Kaspershak.
01:50:24 If he moves up into second place and El-Ghendi holds on to first,
01:50:27 we are in for one heck of a party here in Cairo this evening.
01:50:30 Cap yourselves in, folks.
01:50:31 We've still got two shoots to go.
01:50:33 Approaching now the penultimate shoot.
01:50:35 Shabadun has made his way back into the picture as well.
01:50:38 The top four are close.
01:50:41 One mistake and you lose a medal.
01:50:43 Shabadun has broken away from the chasing pack as well.
01:50:46 Here we go.
01:50:48 Ahmed El-Ghendi at the range.
01:50:50 Kaspershak arriving next to him.
01:50:52 And there's Muhtasim Ahmed.
01:50:54 El-Ghendi racing through this routine.
01:50:56 It's so well oiled and practiced.
01:50:58 A 7.22 for Ahmed El-Ghendi.
01:51:02 What about Kaspershak?
01:51:05 Kaspershak with a 10.36.
01:51:07 But Muhtasim Ahmed has closed that gap right down.
01:51:10 Shabadun, I think, is away as well, is he?
01:51:13 No, Shabadun's still at the range.
01:51:14 He gets away eventually.
01:51:16 What about further back?
01:51:17 Wow.
01:51:18 John Baptiste Morser has brought himself into the picture.
01:51:21 Marvin Dogg with a 7-second shoot.
01:51:24 Balashev's knocking on the door as well.
01:51:26 I think Valentin Belou with a 16-second shoot
01:51:31 is probably out of medal contention now.
01:51:34 The top four separated by 17 seconds.
01:51:36 And look at this battle now between the two Egyptians.
01:51:43 Muhtasim Ahmed is closing in on Ahmed El-Ghendi.
01:51:48 Would you believe it?
01:51:49 I'm getting nervy.
01:51:49 Look at that.
01:51:50 Look at that gap.
01:51:51 It's only a few seconds now.
01:51:53 Muhtasim Ahmed, the young Egyptian,
01:51:56 is closing in on Ahmed El-Ghendi for the race lead.
01:51:59 This would be his first World Cup medal.
01:52:02 And he's closing in on his hero, Ahmed El-Ghendi,
01:52:06 who won silver at the Olympic Games.
01:52:09 Muhtasim Ahmed is powering through.
01:52:12 And he goes round the outside of Ahmed El-Ghendi
01:52:16 to steal the race lead in front of this home Egyptian crowd.
01:52:20 Muhtasim Ahmed is absolutely flying.
01:52:25 Wow.
01:52:26 This would be a shock.
01:52:29 He starts in third place.
01:52:31 He's all going to come down to that final shoot.
01:52:34 Yeah, here we go.
01:52:35 The final shooting series.
01:52:36 I mean, we're a little way off yet.
01:52:38 They've still got a bit of this race to go.
01:52:41 But Muhtasim Ahmed, oh my goodness me,
01:52:43 what a mature performance this has been by him.
01:52:46 Makes his way towards the shooting range.
01:52:48 Ahmed El-Ghendi, hot on his tail.
01:52:52 And Kasper Schach still in third place.
01:52:55 Everything still to be decided on this final shout.
01:52:58 It is Mohammed versus El-Ghendi.
01:53:02 Hold your breath, everybody.
01:53:04 Strap yourselves in.
01:53:05 They're two for two.
01:53:06 El-Ghendi makes it three.
01:53:07 El-Ghendi makes it four.
01:53:09 El-Ghendi's away with a 7.33.
01:53:11 And Mohammed is struggling at the range here.
01:53:14 He's away, but he's got to do the work on the track now.
01:53:16 You feel perhaps that Ahmed El-Ghendi has caught the pace.
01:53:20 But Muhtasim Ahmed is quick.
01:53:21 And this is going to go right down to the wire.
01:53:24 Kasper Schach is there as well.
01:53:26 I think he's held on pretty well.
01:53:27 Although John-Baptiste Morsea is closing in on third as well.
01:53:32 Ahmed El-Ghendi versus Muhtasim Ahmed.
01:53:34 Can El-Ghendi hold on?
01:53:36 He looks like he's tiring a little bit.
01:53:38 Can Muhtasim Ahmed, who's five seconds back, close that gap?
01:53:41 He overtook him on the previous lap.
01:53:43 He kept that pace going the whole way through this race.
01:53:45 As they go past Christopher Platt,
01:53:47 Christopher Platt lets them by, knowing that this is for gold.
01:53:50 It's the two Egyptians up against each other
01:53:53 in front of their home ground.
01:53:54 But Ahmed El-Ghendi has found an extra turn of pace.
01:53:57 He's kept a little bit of energy for the end of this race.
01:54:00 Ahmed El-Ghendi from Egypt has been so consistent
01:54:03 throughout the day.
01:54:04 Muhtasim Ahmed is putting absolutely everything
01:54:07 into this to try and catch his Egyptian teammate.
01:54:11 Either way, now you feel it's going
01:54:12 to be an Egyptian one or two.
01:54:15 Ahmed El-Ghendi, he's still under pressure here.
01:54:18 Muhtasim Ahmed will not give up on this.
01:54:21 The gap is even smaller.
01:54:22 It's just three seconds.
01:54:24 Muhtasim Ahmed is putting absolutely everything
01:54:26 into this.
01:54:27 You can see the grimace on his face.
01:54:29 He's absolutely flying round.
01:54:31 Has Ahmed El-Ghendi got enough pace to bring this home
01:54:34 and take yet another gold medal?
01:54:37 Muhtasim Ahmed chasing him down.
01:54:39 But Ahmed El-Ghendi, the Olympic silver medalist,
01:54:42 raises his hands up.
01:54:43 He wins gold here in Cairo in front of his home crowd.
01:54:48 It is a one-two for Egypt.
01:54:50 Muhtasim Ahmed superbly takes silver.
01:54:53 It's a bronze medal for Kamil Kasparchak.
01:54:57 And Jean-Baptiste Morser of France
01:55:00 comes home to take an incredible fourth place.
01:55:03 Shaba Boom coming home in fifth place.
01:55:06 Marvin Dogg in sixth place.
01:55:09 Balashev coming home in seventh.
01:55:12 What a race that was.
01:55:14 The two Egyptians absolutely thrilling
01:55:20 as Valentin Boulod comes home.
01:55:23 Are you OK, Mariam?
01:55:23 I am absolutely OK.
01:55:25 And Egypt won two in front of their home crowd.
01:55:28 It's absolutely phenomenal.
01:55:29 And it's just an indication of how hard
01:55:31 these Egyptians are working on trying to better
01:55:34 their performance day by day.
01:55:35 And they are a very strong team.
01:55:38 As our final athletes come across the line,
01:55:41 Pierre de Jardin moved up the field a couple spots.
01:55:43 Mohamed Chabane.
01:55:45 Emiliano Hernandez crosses over the finish line as well.
01:55:49 There is Lukas Kutkowski.
01:55:52 Ahmed Hamid coming home as well.
01:55:54 That was an absolute classic of a race.
01:55:58 Moutez Mohamed looks absolutely delighted.
01:56:01 He looks emotional as well.
01:56:03 He took the Olympic silver medalist the whole way,
01:56:06 by the way.
01:56:07 I cannot wait for that post-race interview
01:56:10 with both those athletes on what was
01:56:13 one of the most dramatic modern pentathlon
01:56:16 finals of modern times.
01:56:19 This sport just never, ever stops giving, does it?
01:56:22 Yeah.
01:56:22 Christopher Pate just brings himself home.
01:56:25 Yeah, Christopher Pate and these are our top three athletes.
01:56:32 Ahmed Elgin, Dean Gold, Moutez Mohamed
01:56:34 with his first ever World Cup medal in silver,
01:56:37 and Kamil Kasprzak in third.
01:56:39 I think that's Kasprzak's first medal as well, by the way.
01:56:42 We should double check that.
01:56:43 I'm pretty sure that's Kasprzak's first medal.
01:56:47 Yeah, that's Kasprzak's first medal as well.
01:56:50 So we've got two new medalists on the podium here.
01:56:55 That was an exhilarating final.
01:56:58 Absolutely brilliant stuff from all of our athletes.
01:57:01 Ahmed Elgin was brilliant, wasn't he?
01:57:08 Yeah, the Egyptian crowd is definitely
01:57:10 thrilled with that performance.
01:57:12 Two Egyptians on the podium.
01:57:16 Mariam, I'm going to leave you to it.
01:57:17 We're going to get some interviews.
01:57:19 Leave it with Mariam as we go to find out some thoughts
01:57:22 of some very excited athletes.
01:57:25 As James moves out of the commentary box now,
01:57:29 a swarm of coaches, athletes, and spectators
01:57:34 are making their way onto the Laser Run Arena,
01:57:37 congratulating their athletes.
01:57:38 Moutez Mohamed in silver, Ahmed Elgin, Dean Gold.
01:57:42 A second gold at this competition for Ahmed Elgin.
01:57:45 Got the same medal last year, and a good omen
01:57:48 going into this 2024 season.
01:57:52 Moutez Mohamed, you can see just how much that means to him.
01:57:55 If you've been joining us from the beginning of the day,
01:57:57 things have switched up quite a lot.
01:57:59 But Moutez Mohamed, this is going
01:58:01 to be a big one in his career.
01:58:04 Let's take a look back at how the race progressed.
01:58:07 We, of course, started with Ahmed Elgin
01:58:09 and Kamil Kasprzak starting in joint first.
01:58:14 And it was Ahmed Elgin taking an early race lead.
01:58:17 And I don't know if you can hear this in the background.
01:58:20 The Egyptian crowd is going wild,
01:58:22 throwing Ahmed up in the air.
01:58:25 But back to that replay, Kasprzak and Ahmed Elgin
01:58:29 were going pretty close to each other at the beginning.
01:58:32 But it was Ahmed Elgin who took that lead.
01:58:34 Kasprzak, a little bit of a struggle in the range.
01:58:41 Dropped him back to bronze.
01:58:42 That's not to take away from his achievement at all.
01:58:46 Moutez Mohamed did fight him for that medal and essentially won.
01:58:52 He even gave Ahmed Elgin a run for his money
01:58:54 in that fourth lap.
01:58:57 Was ahead of him going into the shooting series.
01:59:01 But it was Ahmed's quick shooting
01:59:04 got him out of the range first.
01:59:07 It's extremely distracting trying
01:59:11 to go through those replays with the Egyptian crowd
01:59:14 just going crazy and throwing the Egyptians up in the air.
01:59:18 Rightfully so, these Egyptians have made their way up.
01:59:24 And this is the moment where Ahmed Elgin,
01:59:26 he crosses the line, takes the ribbon,
01:59:30 and becomes the winner of the first World
01:59:33 Cup of this 2024 season.
01:59:36 Moutez Mohamed absolutely delighted
01:59:39 for that silver medal.
01:59:40 Kamil Kasprzak, also his first World Cup medal,
01:59:44 coming across the line in bronze.
01:59:46 What a fantastic performance from all three athletes.
01:59:50 Congratulations to Ahmed Elgin, Moutez Mohamed,
01:59:53 and Kamil Kasprzak.
01:59:55 [INAUDIBLE]
02:00:00 Embracing his mother, who's been watching him
02:00:03 from the sidelines all five days of this competition.
02:00:07 Emotional day for Egyptians.
02:00:09 Let's just take a look at the standings.
02:00:12 There you have it, Ahmed Elgin in first, Moutez Mohamed
02:00:15 in second, Kamil Kasprzak in third,
02:00:17 Jean-Baptiste Mourchia, who will also be joining them
02:00:20 on the podium, fourth, Chababon fifth, Marvin Valley Dog,
02:00:24 also joining them in sixth.
02:00:26 Alishab in seventh, Valentine Villot in eighth.
02:00:29 Let's take a look back and see how things are further behind.
02:00:32 In 10th place, Charles Brown, 11th, Mohamed Chabane, 12th,
02:00:36 Pierre Dujardin, 13th, Martin Lux, Emiliano Hernandez,
02:00:39 Andrey Kutovsky, Ahmed Heimichang, Wan Siu,
02:00:43 and Christopher Pate.
02:00:45 And there you have it, folks.
02:00:47 That's the end of the men's final here in Cairo.
02:00:52 We've seen some highs and lows, and the Egyptian crowd
02:00:57 is definitely delighted.
02:00:58 But we will go to James with an interview with our top biathlete.
02:01:03 Kamil, an absolutely excellent race from you.
02:01:06 I know just how much this means to you.
02:01:09 Talk to us about your feelings and your emotions
02:01:11 at getting your first World Cup bronze medal.
02:01:14 Yes, this competition is very crazy for me.
02:01:18 It's unbelievable.
02:01:20 My first final in World Cup and my first bronze medal.
02:01:26 I am unbelievable.
02:01:28 Just how difficult was that race?
02:01:30 Because it was a very, very tough race for you, wasn't it?
02:01:37 Yes, very difficult.
02:01:40 I'm so, so very strong running for me.
02:01:47 Weather is very hot.
02:01:49 It's very, very, very strong.
02:01:52 And just finally, a word in Polish
02:01:53 for your many fans watching back home.
02:01:56 [SPEAKING POLISH]
02:01:59 [SPEAKING POLISH]
02:02:08 Well done, my friend.
02:02:09 Congratulations.
02:02:10 A first final and a first medal.
02:02:11 You've done well.
02:02:12 So well.
02:02:13 Thank you very much.
02:02:14 Kamil Kasprzak, our bronze medalist,
02:02:17 struggled a bit with the heat here in Cairo.
02:02:19 But that did not affect his performance at all.
02:02:23 Came home in bronze and a first for him.
02:02:26 We have two firsts here.
02:02:28 Moutaz Mohamed and Kamil Kasprzak winning their first
02:02:32 ever World Cup medal.
02:02:34 And it's fantastic to see those youngsters making their way
02:02:37 and establishing themselves in the senior scene.
02:02:40 And we go to another interview with James.
02:02:44 Moutaz, just describe how amazing this feels for you.
02:02:48 All of the Egyptians had you up on their shoulders.
02:02:51 They're chanting your name.
02:02:52 How special is this moment for you?
02:02:54 It's very special.
02:02:56 It's really amazing to look how they're all proud of how I did.
02:03:00 [CHEERING]
02:03:02 It feels so good.
02:03:04 I'm feeling my father proud.
02:03:07 So it's really good.
02:03:09 And at my hometown, with all the support,
02:03:11 I'm very happy, very, very happy.
02:03:13 I made a lot of effort.
02:03:15 And I'm the youngest here.
02:03:16 With all the old ones and the elder ones
02:03:19 and their experience, it feels really good.
02:03:22 You really deserve this.
02:03:23 Just take all these moments and memorize these,
02:03:26 because this is very, very special for you.
02:03:28 Talk to us about the race, because it was crazy.
02:03:31 You were closing in on Ahmed.
02:03:32 And had the race been 10 seconds longer,
02:03:34 you might have even caught him.
02:03:35 Yeah, maybe.
02:03:38 The race was very, very hard, even from fencing.
02:03:41 The first day at qualification, I did very bad fencing.
02:03:45 Second day in swimming final, I did 215.
02:03:48 And it was just enough for me, because I
02:03:50 have a very great laser run.
02:03:53 So it was just enough.
02:03:55 And yesterday in the semifinal, I made a very bad shooting.
02:04:03 And I had to run for it.
02:04:04 Today, it was all perfect.
02:04:07 I couldn't ask for more.
02:04:09 Just finally, a word in Arabic for our Egyptian viewers
02:04:13 back home.
02:04:14 [SPEAKING ARABIC]
02:04:16 [SPEAKING ARABIC]
02:04:17 Well done, brother.
02:04:29 Enjoy the moment, man.
02:04:30 You've done Egypt proud.
02:04:32 You can see just how much that means to Mohamed.
02:04:35 He will be very proud of himself,
02:04:39 as I'm sure his family and friends are.
02:04:41 He pulled off a fantastic performance.
02:04:43 He came out of nowhere, basically.
02:04:45 He was the under-19 world champion.
02:04:47 And now, can say that he has a medal at the World Cup
02:04:51 Series in the seniors.
02:04:53 So fantastic work from Mohamed.
02:04:56 And we throw to James for the final interview.
02:04:59 Ahmed, things are a little bit crazy here.
02:05:01 Did you win the race?
02:05:03 I think, yeah.
02:05:04 It's like, I feel one year ago, I won this race.
02:05:10 I feel the same feelings, the same emotions,
02:05:13 the same race.
02:05:14 Actually, the last race ended in the last lap.
02:05:19 Today, it was like this.
02:05:21 During the last shooting, I was feeling a little bit more
02:05:26 confident in the last shooting.
02:05:29 I was focusing on the last shooting
02:05:31 because I knew that it was going to be ended in the last lap.
02:05:34 So here it is for the second time in a row
02:05:38 and for the third time in my career
02:05:41 to win the first World Cup in Egypt here.
02:05:44 Things are never completely easy for you.
02:05:47 You're a fantastic athlete, but you
02:05:48 have to battle for these victories.
02:05:50 Going back into second place a few times during that race,
02:05:53 your teammate, Moutaz Mohamed, pushed you all the way.
02:05:56 Just how difficult was that?
02:05:57 Yeah, it was so difficult.
02:06:00 All the competition, also during the qualifications,
02:06:04 it was a lot of drama in the first day of the qualifications.
02:06:07 I qualified at 12th in my group.
02:06:10 The last one to qualify.
02:06:12 So I was feeling not OK after the first day.
02:06:15 But here I am winning the gold medal.
02:06:17 And actually, Moutaz Mohamed, also, he was fantastic.
02:06:20 He did a great race.
02:06:22 When he passed me in the fourth lap, he was pushing too hard.
02:06:28 I was trying to stick in his back.
02:06:32 I was trying to enter with him the shooting.
02:06:36 So I can be finishing the last shooting first.
02:06:41 So I can go to the last lap.
02:06:43 And a little bit I was saving for the last lap.
02:06:46 Because as I said, I knew that it was going
02:06:48 to be ending in the last lap.
02:06:50 Just a quick word on how crazy things are here,
02:06:53 and how good the support you have here in Egypt is.
02:06:56 In Arabic or in English?
02:06:58 In Arabic, yeah.
02:07:00 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
02:07:01 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
02:07:03 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
02:07:04 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
02:07:05 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
02:07:06 [NON-ENGLISH SPEECH]
02:07:34 But I want it to be in English so everybody can understand.
02:07:38 So I want to give a word for my brother Mohamed.
02:07:42 He got eliminated yesterday during the semifinals
02:07:46 because a mistake, a silly mistake in the shooting.
02:07:51 He forgot to shoot the fifth shot.
02:07:54 But I knew that if he was in the finals today,
02:08:00 I'm sure that he will be on the podium.
02:08:02 He would be on the podium.
02:08:04 And it will be the gold medal.
02:08:06 So I'm telling him no worries.
02:08:11 And next time, you will be on the podium, inshallah.
02:08:14 Listen, you and your family are only
02:08:15 getting more and more famous.
02:08:16 Congratulations.
02:08:17 Enjoy the moment, my friend.
02:08:18 Well done.
02:08:19 Yeah, thank you.
02:08:19 Well done.
02:08:20 Thank you so much.
02:08:20 Well done.
02:08:21 These are the words from our winner here
02:08:23 in Cairo, Ahmed El-Ginzi.
02:08:27 Yeah, and let's just take a look back at the results
02:08:30 one last time.
02:08:31 Ahmed El-Ginzi in first, Mohtaz Mohamed in second,
02:08:33 Camille Kasperchak in third, Jean-Baptiste Walshia
02:08:36 in fourth, Chababam fifth, Marvin Dogg, Balasheb,
02:08:40 Valentin Belo, and in ninth, Richard Berechky.
02:08:45 As we move on to the next page where our next nine athletes
02:08:50 are, Charles Brown came home in 10th,
02:08:52 dropped down a couple of points.
02:08:54 Mohamed Chabain, 11th, Pierre de Jardin, 12th,
02:08:57 Matty Lukes, Miliano Hernandez, Lukas Kutovsky,
02:09:00 Ahmed Hamid, Xiangguang Zeyo, and Christopher Papp
02:09:03 finishing in 18th.
02:09:05 He, of course, was eliminated in the ride,
02:09:07 so no medal contention for him.
02:09:11 But it's good that he finished this competition in style
02:09:15 and definitely gained some points towards his name
02:09:18 in terms of the Olympic ranking.
02:09:21 Let's take a look back at the road
02:09:25 Ahmed has been through since the beginning of this competition
02:09:29 to his gold medal here today.
02:09:32 Let's take a look.
02:09:33 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:09:36 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:09:40 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:09:44 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:09:47 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:10:04 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:10:07 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:10:27 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:10:30 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:10:55 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:10:58 Madhugindy's road to the top.
02:11:15 What a phenomenal run he's had.
02:11:17 Didn't start the competition quite as he'd wanted.
02:11:20 He finished the qualifications just making
02:11:24 the cut in 12th place and picked himself up
02:11:27 in the ranking round for the semifinals and finals
02:11:30 and paved his way all to the top.
02:11:33 So even if the competition doesn't
02:11:35 go your way in the beginning, you can still fight for it.
02:11:38 And Ahmed is living proof of that.
02:11:40 As we make our way to the bonus round stage,
02:11:44 the athletes, coaches, and spectators
02:11:46 are making their way inside now out of this medal ceremony
02:11:50 where we will have two Egyptians on the podium, first
02:11:53 and second, Mohtaz Mohamed and Ahmed Madhugindy.
02:11:56 And of course, in third is Camille Kasperchak.
02:12:01 Yeah, it's been quite a day with the women's final this morning
02:12:04 and the men's final this afternoon.
02:12:06 It's nerve-wracking and exciting.
02:12:09 And yeah, it's just an honor being
02:12:13 able to witness such talent and just being here
02:12:20 with all the experienced athletes in the field.
02:12:23 This is, of course, Olympic season.
02:12:25 So athletes are going to push hard,
02:12:28 bring it in all of the competitions this season.
02:12:31 And this is still one of many to come.
02:12:36 This is, of course, the first World Cup here in Cairo.
02:12:39 We will have three more World Cups
02:12:40 before we find out who will make it to the World Cup final
02:12:44 and then, obviously, the World Championship ahead of the Paris
02:12:49 2024 Olympics, which will be held in August.
02:12:55 So if you are just tuning in, the men's final have concluded.
02:13:02 And we are moving in to the bonus round piece
02:13:07 where the stage is for our medal ceremony.
02:13:11 Egyptian national anthem will be playing here in Egypt.
02:13:14 So expect the crowd to sing along.
02:13:18 It is a fantastic day for Egyptians here.
02:13:22 Two Egyptians on the podium, best case scenario.
02:13:26 And two first ever World Cup medals
02:13:31 for Mohamed and Kamil Kasperchak as we welcome James back
02:13:35 into the commentary box.
02:13:36 Are you OK, James?
02:13:37 Oh, he's on the craziest podium here.
02:13:39 Not podium, I mean, craziest anything.
02:13:41 This is madness here.
02:13:43 Absolute madness.
02:13:44 Great scenes and really good to see.
02:13:47 Egyptians doing well in Egypt.
02:13:48 You guys know how to pass it.
02:13:50 We did say if you were going to get first and second,
02:13:52 it was going to erupt here.
02:13:53 Yeah, it was a crazy, crazy race and one
02:14:01 that I think will long go down in the memory of a lot
02:14:04 of these athletes.
02:14:06 Really, really good scenes and good stuff.
02:14:11 Yeah, the leaders are obviously--
02:14:14 it was very well deserved for those top three athletes
02:14:16 looking further down the rankings.
02:14:19 I don't know why Charlie Brown dropped back into 10th.
02:14:21 He started in fourth.
02:14:23 And considering his laser run, we
02:14:26 thought he'd even move up into medal position.
02:14:28 So that was unexpected.
02:14:32 But again, things can go wrong and things
02:14:35 might not go your way.
02:14:38 And that's just been tap on.
02:14:40 It happens.
02:14:40 It happens.
02:14:41 We're building up to the start of the medal ceremony.
02:14:45 And there's always highs and lows in sports, isn't there?
02:14:48 There's always ups and downs.
02:14:49 There are some athletes that are going to win gold one day
02:14:52 and then not even finish on the top 10 another day.
02:14:56 It's all part and parcel of sport.
02:14:57 I had an interview with Emilio Hernandez then.
02:15:01 He's been a star of the sport the last couple of years.
02:15:04 And obviously, a little bit down in the dumps.
02:15:06 But at the same time, he will come back stronger.
02:15:09 The likes of Chang Wangseo will come back stronger.
02:15:11 Christopher Papp will come back stronger.
02:15:13 It's all part of the process, isn't it?
02:15:15 And as Ahmed mentioned in his interview,
02:15:17 a special word to his brother, Mohamed,
02:15:19 who had a bit of bad luck.
02:15:21 But he'll come back stronger as well.
02:15:23 Yeah, I mean, it's a long season.
02:15:24 And it's a marathon, not a sprint.
02:15:26 So this is only the first stop of many this year
02:15:30 ahead of the Olympic Games.
02:15:31 Many opportunities to come for all the athletes
02:15:36 to showcase their performances as we wait for the athletes.
02:15:43 Officials and VIPs to make their way to the stage
02:15:48 for the medal ceremony.
02:15:49 So we're just waiting for the start of the medal ceremony.
02:16:10 Yeah, been a really exciting event here in Cairo,
02:16:15 the first event of the 2024 season, Olympic season,
02:16:21 build up to what promises to be a really good season
02:16:26 of pentathlon action.
02:16:27 And we are just waiting for the start of the medal ceremony.
02:16:38 It's going to be an Egyptian riot in there, isn't it?
02:16:40 Absolutely crazy scenes.
02:16:43 And today was, of course, finals day.
02:16:46 But tomorrow, we bring you the mixed relay.
02:16:48 True that.
02:16:49 We've still got more action to bring you here.
02:16:50 Any idea on who perhaps might be the Egyptian team?
02:17:02 Not yet, no.
02:17:03 But we will, of course, know by the end of the day.
02:17:08 So the pentathlon meeting is set.
02:17:10 Now we will welcome the athletes and presenters
02:17:17 to the stage for the medal ceremony.
02:17:21 Dr. Paul Shorman making his way, as are
02:17:26 the rest of the presenters.
02:17:28 [MUSIC PLAYING]
02:17:32 Good to have an athlete up there from the home nation,
02:17:57 the two athletes were--
02:17:59 we were not expecting that, not betting on that.
02:18:02 But they got the job done.
02:18:05 Ahmad Gendi and Mohamed.
02:18:07 And let's not forget Camille Kasperchak,
02:18:10 who is also in his first World Cup medal.
02:18:13 And he seemed emotional in his interview.
02:18:15 But first, let's give an honor of mention to our top six
02:18:18 athletes, Marvin Dodd came home in sixth.
02:18:22 Shaba Boon, of course, coming in fifth place.
02:18:25 Jean-Baptiste Mosser, how has he done that?
02:18:29 He's finished in fourth place.
02:18:30 That is just brilliant.
02:18:31 He started in 12th.
02:18:32 Jean-Baptiste Mosser is only, we feel--
02:18:36 Getting better.
02:18:37 --only getting better.
02:18:37 And he is going to be--
02:18:39 does he qualify?
02:18:40 He can.
02:18:41 Good, too, good.
02:18:42 Does he get ahead of the line?
02:18:44 I mean, Valentin Pras has already booked his ticket.
02:18:46 Does he get ahead of Chris Opat?
02:18:48 Does he get ahead of Pierre Bledon?
02:18:49 He's both well for his ranking at this point.
02:18:51 Yeah.
02:18:52 In the early days.
02:18:53 Yeah.
02:18:55 So trying to read their body language is quite difficult,
02:18:58 isn't it?
02:18:59 I'm sure they can't get any of them disappointed.
02:19:02 And Shaba Boon does seem to be over the moon with that finish.
02:19:08 Quite tough to read.
02:19:09 There he goes, big smile.
02:19:11 Shaba Boon mostly moves up the field a couple of spots.
02:19:15 He only moved up one spot.
02:19:16 So by his perfectionist mindset, he maybe
02:19:20 would not be 100% pleased with that.
02:19:22 But again, these are the elite of the elite.
02:19:24 And expecting themselves to win at every single event.
02:19:30 Jean-Baptiste Moussaier's laser run is ridiculously good.
02:19:35 Yeah.
02:19:35 He is.
02:19:36 If he starts a race, I mean, he can.
02:19:39 He gets better rankings in the ranking round
02:19:41 when it comes to the fencing.
02:19:43 I think he's going to be a definite threat for--
02:19:45 Kamil Kasprzysk, by the way, is competing in his first final
02:19:49 year, and a medal in his first final.
02:19:51 That is just remarkable.
02:19:52 Yeah, that's crazy.
02:19:53 I agree, yeah.
02:19:54 Especially given the quality of opponents he had around him.
02:19:59 It's a real breakthrough event.
02:20:01 It doesn't feel like an Olympic year podium, does it?
02:20:04 And in the sense that maybe in Cairo 2022,
02:20:10 some of the more experienced athletes were taking it.
02:20:14 You'd expect to see a young, fresh-faced podium.
02:20:16 But this is the first event of the year.
02:20:19 Yeah, the new format is brutal, though.
02:20:20 So these younger athletes seem to have more stamina going
02:20:24 into that.
02:20:26 They seem to find that extra turn of pace on the final lap,
02:20:29 don't they?
02:20:29 Kamil Kasprzysk becomes a pentathlon world cup medalist
02:20:34 for the first time in his first final.
02:20:37 Brilliant, brilliant story, that.
02:20:39 Wait for the crowd.
02:20:40 There we go.
02:20:42 Muhtar Muhammad is having the time of his life, isn't he?
02:20:45 Absolutely delirious.
02:20:48 You know how much he's into this.
02:20:49 Yeah.
02:20:50 I've known Muhtar since he was six.
02:20:52 So just watching him grow into the athlete he is today,
02:20:56 and it's just phenomenal seeing him just move up the standings
02:21:01 through the youth, through the junior, and up to the seniors.
02:21:04 And getting a medal in front of his home crowd
02:21:06 is definitely something that he'd be proud of.
02:21:09 And yeah, the Egyptian spectators
02:21:13 are definitely proud of him, his family and friends, of course.
02:21:15 And I just saw in his interview how emotional he was
02:21:19 and how much this actually means to him.
02:21:20 Special medal for special athlete.
02:21:24 It's silver.
02:21:25 [CHEERING]
02:21:29 And there is Detroit.
02:21:35 And the New York fighter.
