AccuWeather's Bernie Rayno says the storm on the way for the final weekend of February won't be as widespread as some of the recent storms in the Northeast.
Transcript
00:00 Well, conditions in the Northeast are
00:01 starting to improve after the weekend.
00:03 Of course, no blanket of the region
00:05 early on throughout the weekend,
00:07 but it's just a brief break for some
00:09 because there could be more snow and
00:11 certainly some rain as we go into the
00:13 later week. Bernie Reno has a closer look.
00:16 Well, as we take a look at the
00:20 storm threat late this week,
00:21 I don't see where I think we're
00:23 going to see a repeat of the last
00:25 couple of storms that we've been
00:27 dealing with across the Northeast.
00:28 The cold air that's in here
00:30 today is going to be leaving.
00:32 Look how temperatures are on the rise here
00:34 as we get in the latter half of the week.
00:36 So remember,
00:37 we do have a storm coming on Wednesday,
00:39 but if you just looked at this map,
00:41 you could start eliminating areas here,
00:42 and I think that's most of Pennsylvania
00:44 on South as the storm approaches.
00:46 It's just too warm.
00:47 There's not an injection of cold
00:48 air coming on the front side of this storm.
00:50 It'll be on the back side,
00:52 so this is the area that you would
00:53 have to look for just because I
00:55 think the air would be cold enough.
00:57 To support snow,
00:58 all right, where is that storm that we're tracking?
01:00 Here it is.
01:01 You have our upper level low in the California.
01:03 This is the piece of energy that we're
01:05 going to be tracking as we head toward
01:07 this week. That's the actual storm.
01:09 And watch what it does.
01:10 It's going to dive Southeastward as
01:12 we head toward tonight into tomorrow.
01:14 I'm going to stop this on Wednesday.
01:16 Here's the energy now you'll notice it.
01:18 Lot of yellows, oranges and red showing
01:20 you that you indeed have a lot of energy
01:22 as this comes in to Southern California.
01:25 But watch what happens as we
01:26 move forward this energy actually
01:28 kind of fades and weakens and by
01:30 the time we get into Thursday,
01:32 there's not much left of it.
01:34 You start seeing yellow,
01:35 so there's some energy,
01:36 not a whole lot.
01:37 Now, having said that,
01:38 you have to track it and as we
01:40 head into the end of the week,
01:42 it is a pattern that we've seen before.
01:44 That is a split flow to branches
01:46 of the jet stream,
01:47 Northern Branch, Southern Branch.
01:49 Now the Southern Branch.
01:50 That's the actual storm.
01:51 The Northern Branch will do two things.
01:53 It'll steer it and also bring in
01:55 some cold air on the backside of this
01:57 storm and that's how you get some snow.
01:59 Now if this Northern Branch piece of
02:01 energy moves just as fast or faster
02:03 than the Southern piece, then get.
02:05 This gets driven off to the South and
02:07 Eastern. There's no snow,
02:08 but we don't think that's going to happen.
02:10 It's going to be moving to the Northeast,
02:12 but again, while there's cold air coming in,
02:14 there's not a lot.
02:15 If we get any snow,
02:16 I think it's mostly across New York State,
02:18 Northern New England and Eastern Canada.
02:20 Will keep an eye on it.
