00:00 Verse 35 of Chapter 6 of Srimad Bhagavad Gita.
00:15 The blessed Lord said, "O mighty armed one, undoubtedly the mind is untractable and restless,
00:27 but O son of Kunti, it is brought under control through practice and detachment."
00:34 The question reads, "What is meant by bringing the mind under control?"
00:42 Please also explain how practice and detachment help in achieving the above.
00:47 In the very same chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, Shri Krishna has very lucidly explained what
01:01 is mind control.
01:06 Mind control is not about suppressing the mind, it is about supporting the mind to take
01:19 the right route and reach the right destination.
01:26 The word control has not very friendly vibes or connotations.
01:45 One controls a disease, one controls something that must not be there.
02:01 The mind does not really need control.
02:09 The authority in Gita makes it amply clear, the mind needs to be brought to Atma, that
02:23 is the central message of Chapter 6.
02:25 Bring the mind to Atma.
02:27 What is Atma?
02:28 Atma is the highest potential of the mind.
02:31 Atma is the destination of the mind.
02:37 It is for the mind that, it is for the Atma that the mind exists and it is due to the
02:51 Atma that the mind exists.
02:53 Therefore, the Atma is the beginning and the end of mind.
02:59 Therefore, the Atma is the point from where the mind emerges and the point into which
03:12 the mind submerges.
03:20 That is what is mind control.
03:22 The mind really wants peace, peace is Atma.
03:33 But the mind is a little foolish.
03:35 Why do I say so?
03:37 Had the mind not been foolish, why would it have left its Atma state and become the mind?
03:48 Does the mind not have the choice to exist in the Atma state, which is the topmost state,
04:03 which is the peaceful state, which is the natural state, all the time and when you exist
04:10 in a state all the time, then there is no time, there is timelessness.
04:19 Time is only when time is bounded.
04:25 Time is a concept that demands boundaries.
04:30 Something has to begin at a certain time and something has to end at a certain time, where
04:33 there is a beginning and there is an end, there is time.
04:38 The mind does have the option to remain in its top potential, at its maxima always and
04:50 anything that is always is now timeless, beyond the scope of birth and death, rise and fall,
05:04 coming and going.
05:06 But the mind didn't take that option.
05:11 What has the mind chosen to do?
05:12 The mind has chosen to be itself.
05:16 The mind has chosen to be the mind.
05:19 Therefore I am calling the mind a little foolish.
05:26 So even though this foolish mind does have the option always to go for the top state,
05:39 the natural state, the peaceful state, the restful state, it being what it is, it takes
05:50 other options.
05:54 It wants peace but will not directly take peace.
05:59 It will want peace through this and that.
06:07 It wants rest, won't directly take rest.
06:11 Want security, won't directly settle into security.
06:16 Are you getting it?
06:23 That's the prakriti of mind.
06:27 The prakriti of mind is not in alignment with the nature of the mind.
06:38 The prakriti of mind is to go about in cycles.
06:45 All prakriti is cyclical, right?
06:47 Like sea waves, aren't sea waves cyclical?
06:53 Like birth and death, like day and night, everything in prakriti is cyclical.
07:02 That's the prakriti of mind.
07:03 But nature is not cyclical.
07:07 Nature is submergence, a final settlement, a closure, a peacefulness, no more running
07:19 around.
07:20 In prakriti there is always movement, a lot of running around.
07:25 So the mind is sandwiched between these two, its prakriti and its nature.
07:33 Nature says settle down, prakriti says run around.
07:41 Nature says be simple, prakriti says no, no, no, if you are simple you will be killed.
07:50 Are you getting it?
07:56 Mind is always in this conflict.
08:08 What helps mind in this phase of conflict?
08:14 Its very nature.
08:17 Just as prakriti allures you, your nature too beckons you.
08:28 When prakriti allures you, it is called Maya.
08:35 When your nature allures you, what you get is a Krishna.
08:43 So the two sides of the mind, rather the two forces of the mind, both work on the mind
08:55 in their own ways.
08:57 Prakriti works on the mind by appearing very convincingly, very enchantingly, very compellingly,
09:10 very colorfully as Maya.
09:17 Does that not happen?
09:19 You open your eyes and all that you see around you is prakriti.
09:25 Whether prakriti of the existential kind, which Shri Krishna calls as aparaprakriti,
09:38 or whether prakriti of the man-made kind, which Shri Krishna calls as paraprakriti.
09:48 So through your senses, through your brain, prakriti always keeps luring you.
10:03 You could even say trapping you.
10:08 Trap is not a very suitable word because prakriti by itself is not conscious.
10:14 It only does what its own constitution, what its own predestined dynamics command it to do.
10:31 Remember that it is called prakriti.
10:34 Prakriti means that which comes before any other kind of existence.
10:41 It is at the root of all existence.
10:50 So there is the mind, the mind of the man.
10:58 On one hand, this mind, this man is being enticed by prakriti, Maya.
11:07 On the other hand, there is someone like Shri Krishna.
11:11 Now someone like Shri Krishna does not belong to the usual scheme of prakriti.
11:19 Therefore he is called an avatar.
11:21 That's the difference between an avatar and an animal, an avatar and a normal human being.
11:27 An avatar and anything else, everything else on the earth, everything else in the universe
11:35 belongs to the usual scheme of prakriti.
11:38 They were to be there.
11:41 They are like the waves of the sea.
11:45 If the sea is there, the waves will be there.
11:48 Nothing unusual, nothing surprising.
11:52 So man is born, a woman is born.
11:55 There is a child, there is the animal, there is the rock, there are the stars, there is
11:59 stardust.
12:00 All this is just run-of-the-mill prakriti.
12:05 Nothing astonishing in it, but Shri Krishna is not called prakriti.
12:11 He is avatar.
12:12 He is avatar because he is appearing to mind the man, not as Maya, but as the dispeller
12:20 of Maya.
12:21 Are you getting it?
12:23 Any ordinary man, any ordinary woman would come in contact with you and that contact
12:30 will be the contact of Maya.
12:33 Rest assured.
12:34 But when Shri Krishna comes in contact with you, something extremely unusual happens.
12:43 It is not that now Maya will take you further in its fold, rather that contact with Shri
12:51 Krishna will liberate you from Maya.
12:57 Therefore I am saying even your nature works upon you.
13:05 It is almost as if your nature, your destination is very interested in you coming to the destination.
13:20 The Upanishads say the one who takes a few steps in the direction of truth, finds that
13:39 the truth has taken multiple steps to reach him.
13:52 That will tell you of a crucial difference between Maya and truth.
13:56 The more you move towards Maya, the more distant it seems.
14:02 Keep running after her all your life.
14:04 She is unattainable.
14:07 Distant but unattainable.
14:10 Truth, you move towards truth and you find that the truth is assisting your movement.
14:18 You grow a little in wisdom and you find that the very beginning of your movement towards
14:25 the truth was due to the blessings of the truth, not due to your own internal inspiration.
14:30 You go to a bookstore, you pick a particular book, what do you think?
14:39 If the book is the Bhagavad Gita, it is not you who has picked up the book, it is the
14:44 book that has picked you up.
14:49 On the other hand, if you go to the bookstore and pick some usual nonsense, then it's again
14:57 not you who has picked up the book, the book has picked you up.
15:12 Both are working on you, both are working on you.
15:15 Who will win?
15:20 The one you fall in love with.
15:21 You be very very alert about the quality of your love.
15:29 Who is it you have fallen in love with?
15:32 There are only two and both of these are present to be chosen always.
15:44 Which of these are you falling in love with?
15:49 That's your fate.
15:56 Getting it?
15:58 What does it then mean to bring the mind under control?
16:02 Fall in love with the right one, that is what is meant by bringing the mind under control.
16:10 There is no need to probe too much into a man's life.
16:14 Just ask him, show me the picture of your beloved and that's all.
16:27 You have known the man and you have known the man's fate.
16:34 Whose photo are you carrying in that wallet held to your chest?
16:56 That's what is meant by mind control.
16:58 Therefore mind control is not about suppressing the mind or killing the mind or taming the
17:06 mind.
17:07 It's about giving the mind the one and only befitting lover.
17:25 What is the normal tendency of the mind?
17:27 Remember that it is foolish.
17:31 Do not consciously give the mind what it needs to have and the mind will for certain in its
17:42 own primitive unconsciousness choose the wrong one.
17:50 Therefore you cannot leave things to chance.
17:55 If you are not with total determination making the right decision, the wrong decision is
18:03 default.
18:04 You don't have to make the wrong decision.
18:08 That's man's problem.
18:09 Do you see this?
18:10 Do you now see why mankind is usually in turmoil and suffering?
18:16 Because the right decision has to be made with determination and discipline and the
18:21 wrong decision is default.
18:23 Now what would occur more frequently determination and discipline or default?
18:30 The default is obviously more common.
18:37 Man's default state is of foolishness.
18:41 Liberation comes through determination.
18:45 Liberation is not your default destiny.
18:48 Getting it?
18:54 Don't leave things as they are.
19:00 Don't say that you go with the flow.
19:05 Don't say that life will take care of things or that experience will correct things on
19:13 its own.
19:14 No, life will not at all take care of things.
19:18 No, age and experience will not make corrections in you by themselves.
19:26 You require a steely resolve.
19:30 Otherwise you can live for 40,000 years.
19:33 Nothing will change.
19:34 Your default state is foolishness.
19:37 We are all born like that.
19:38 What to do?
19:39 Nobody's fault.
19:40 We are born like that.
19:44 Our physical configuration is of foolishness.
19:51 All wisdom, all spiritual practice is therefore about going against oneself.
19:56 Don't go against yourself and your course is well set.
20:07 Your life is pre-scripted.
20:22 Don't believe in the natural ones.
20:25 There are many naturals.
20:26 They say, no, we have had no wisdom education, but we understand things on our own.
20:34 No, sir.
20:35 On your own, you only have your own foolishness.
20:39 That's what you have on your own.
20:52 Any kind of ascension, any kind of wisdom or liberation will require concerted effort.
21:00 Want to know the real status of a person, interested in knowing his teacher in life?
21:08 Just ask him, how much has he invested in his self-development, inner development?
21:16 How many years has he given?
21:23 How much of his resources has he put into his own liberation?
21:28 If he says, no, I have never put time nor effort into liberation and still claims that
21:39 he has understanding or wisdom, then he is just bragging.
21:49 Don't take him seriously.
21:55 Wisdom and all higher order things in life will never come on their own.
22:05 What is it that you experience on your own?
22:07 You only experience hunger, sleep, lust.
22:12 The moment you turn 13 or 14, lust arises on its own.
22:18 That's what you experience without any effort or discipline.
22:21 Correct?
22:22 You don't require to be disciplined or determined for your pubic hair to grow or your periods
22:30 to start.
22:33 Stuff just flows on its own.
22:35 So don't say that wisdom too will start flowing in your mind on its own.
22:41 That won't happen.
22:42 You are not recognizing the nature of things when you make such claims.
22:56 This is the most ignored aspect of human life, especially in contemporary world.
23:06 We want to acquire all kinds of skills.
23:14 We would enroll into a three-month course to learn a new language, a new technology,
23:23 a new skill, but wisdom we suppose will come on its own.
23:28 Never, sir, never.
23:31 It won't come on its own.
23:33 I know this admission, this assertion from my side hurts the ego badly.
23:40 We hate to hear that we are foolish by default, but then that's what we are.
23:51 Why and how should I hide it?
23:54 It's so glaringly obvious.
