Race to rescue stray dogs in Russia after new euthanasia law

Volunteers in Buryatia, near the Russia-Mongolia border, say they've rehomed some 600 animals to other regions.

00:00 The Ananda Shelter, the largest in Russia`s eastern Buryatia region, has saved about 600

00:05 dogs from being euthanized over the past two months.

00:08 They were galvanized to act after the Far East Republic legalized the euthanization

00:13 of homeless animals in certain conditions at the end of 2023.

00:17 Under the new law, animal shelters can either send the animals to a temporary holding center

00:22 where they will be euthanized if owners do not claim them in a month or keep them at

00:26 their own expense.

00:41 To save the animals from death, the shelter`s owner has registered hundreds of dogs under

00:46 her name as she tries to find new owners or safe regions for the dogs.

00:54 Owners say animals from Buryatia are being shipped out on trains to regions that are

00:58 still considered safe, including St. Petersburg and Moscow.
