00:02 - Well, hi, and welcome to another one
00:10 of Wally's Weekend Drives.
00:12 Today we got something special.
00:13 We are up here at Camelback Volkswagen,
00:16 joined here by Steve Porter right here,
00:18 the main boy with the joy toy,
00:20 because if you look around the showroom here,
00:22 I mean, we got a Jetta, but man, there's a GTI there,
00:25 there's one of your electric vehicles over there.
00:28 You got all kinds of stuff happening up here.
00:30 How's it been going for you?
00:31 - It's been great.
00:32 Volkswagen's treated us really well,
00:33 and glad to have you here.
00:34 - Excellent.
00:35 Well, I'm glad to be here.
00:37 I can't tell you how much I've enjoyed
00:38 driving this Jetta here for the last week.
00:40 So let's take a look up front here.
00:42 First thing that you're gonna notice,
00:43 or at least what I noticed right away,
00:45 great LED lighting right here.
00:48 The main lights too, but more of the eyebrow here,
00:51 definitely unique for sure.
00:52 And then if you look down here,
00:53 you got driving lights
00:54 that really light things up at night.
00:56 And when you turn in your driveway at night,
00:58 everybody knows you have trouble
01:00 seeing around those bushes.
01:01 That solves that.
01:02 So if you look right here in the front,
01:04 you'll see a very clean, classic Volkswagen banner,
01:09 grill, everything right here for the logo.
01:12 We all know what Volkswagen is, man.
01:14 It's German engineering at its finest.
01:16 In fact, back in the day, my '73 Sunbug,
01:20 the little Volkswagen bug,
01:21 the big thing they were talking about back then
01:23 is the fact it was waterproof and would flow.
01:26 And with the weather we got coming,
01:27 that might not be a bad thing.
01:29 - Not at all.
01:30 - Yeah, yeah.
01:31 So we're rolling on 17 inch wheels right here
01:33 and do have a 1.5 turbo motor in there, a four cylinder,
01:37 making 158 horsepower and 184 foot pounds of torque
01:41 backed up by eight speed transmission
01:44 with a couple of different driving modes,
01:45 which I've been driving in eco mode.
01:48 And this thing gets phenomenal mileage.
01:49 I'm getting like 37 miles per gallon.
01:52 You know, can't believe it.
01:53 This thing is a lot of fun to drive.
01:55 It's really solid going down the road
01:57 and the handling is phenomenal on it too.
01:59 What leads to all that?
02:01 Because I mean, when you look at it from the outside,
02:02 it's a pretty car,
02:03 but man, it doesn't look like it's a performer.
02:05 - Well, it really comes down to four things.
02:07 Volkswagen does that no other manufacturer out there does.
02:10 12 gauge virgin steel.
02:11 You'll have laser seam welds on the top side of the car
02:14 versus the normal six inch spot welds.
02:16 And then as well as you have the one piece stamp doors
02:19 that really kind of separate it apart
02:21 as well as the largest B pillar in their class.
02:24 So all those different factors that kind of come together
02:26 really make the car feel really solid
02:28 as well as a safe vehicle.
02:29 - Okay, so one of those things
02:30 that you're just talking about there,
02:32 the solidness of it.
02:33 Look right there.
02:35 I mean, when you slam the door on a vehicle
02:37 and I test a lot of cars,
02:38 this is a solid door.
02:40 A lot of them aren't.
02:41 Is that the 12 gauge steel?
02:42 - It's a 12 gauge steel
02:43 as well as the door being one solid piece.
02:45 It was only meant to be that door
02:47 and it's not welded together.
02:48 It's just one piece stamp steel.
02:51 - Excellent.
02:51 Boy, I'll tell you what,
02:53 you've done a great job right here.
02:54 Also, if you look inside here, Grady,
02:56 one of the things that you're really gonna like
02:58 is you're gonna like the leather seating
03:00 as well as the heated and ventilated seats in there
03:03 from a comfort standpoint.
03:04 You can't beat it.
03:05 And then it's set up to keep a couple different
03:07 seat setups too.
03:08 So if you share the car with your wife or your child
03:11 or something, it's not a big deal when it comes to it.
03:14 Going a little bit further down here,
03:16 you look at the,
03:17 you got the tilt telescopic heated steering wheel
03:19 with controls right there.
03:21 Dual zone climate control with an advanced cabin filter.
03:25 Now I'm thinking they must,
03:26 the Volkswagen must be listening to me
03:28 and some of my buddies going down the road
03:30 if they have the advanced cabin filter in there.
03:33 Definitely for sure.
03:35 Okay, so let's move around to the back here
03:37 because this is a good road trip car.
03:39 We've put some miles on it.
03:41 Let's take a look in the trunk here
03:43 because one thing that you're gonna see
03:45 is you're gonna see a huge trunk
03:47 and a 60/40 split right here.
03:49 And Grady, if you get up underneath here,
03:51 you can see this right here.
03:52 You hit that and you release it.
03:54 You can now press the seat forward
03:56 if you need a little bit of extra trunk room.
03:58 But I'm thinking this is a huge trunk
04:00 from a depth standpoint.
04:01 - It really is.
04:03 I mean, there's really not anything out there
04:04 in the kind of subcompact sedan market
04:06 that has this much usable trunk space.
04:09 It's usually compromised on one way or the other.
04:11 - Yes, for sure.
04:12 Oh, and of course, this is Wally's weekend drive.
04:15 What did we talk about?
04:16 We talked about spare tires, man.
04:18 This does have a spare tire
04:20 and it gives an extra 10 points, right,
04:21 to start with and a thumbs up from me
04:23 because I love to change tires when it comes to it.
04:26 I don't like sitting on the side of the road.
04:28 - Nobody likes cans of Fix-A-Flat.
04:29 - No doubt, no doubt,
04:31 especially the people when they gotta break
04:32 the tires down later.
04:33 So MSRP on this is $29,975 right here.
04:38 Does Volkswagen have any incentives going on right now?
04:42 Is there a good reason to come in
04:43 other than all that safety?
04:44 - You do have 1.9 for 48 months
04:46 as well as 3.9 for 60 and 4.9 for 72.
04:49 So there's a lot of reasons
04:51 on why to be able to get into a Jetta now.
04:53 - There you go.
04:54 So if you're looking for a better reason to get into a Jetta,
04:56 Steve's got them all right here.
04:57 Come on down to Camelback Volkswagen,
04:59 check it out, you won't be sorry.
05:01 (upbeat music)
05:04 And thank you to Volkswagen Camelback
05:13 for sponsoring that segment.
