00:00 Brussels might seem far away from here, but these Italian farmers are as angry as their
00:05 counterparts in the rest of Europe. In their eyes, the whole sector once seen as a strand
00:09 of Italy`s economy is not as profitable as it used to be. Even for them, the impact of
00:15 EU policies to protect the environment is too hard to handle. They see cheap foreign
00:20 imports as unfair competition. Adding to that, inflation has taken its toll.
00:26 We are an hour`s drive away from Rome, and this is one of the main groups that have assembled
00:30 on the outskirts of the city. They`ve been here for several days already. They`ve been
00:33 sleeping in their trucks and they`re waiting for other trucks to join the protest from
00:37 other parts of the country. Their goal is to hold a larger rally in the Italian capital
00:44 in the next few days. They say they don`t want to surrender and they`re determined to
00:48 reach the parliament building.
00:51 They mainly demand more regulations to be imposed on imports, waiving duties on Ukrainian
00:56 products as a result of the war has drastically reduced their profit margins.
01:01 Last year, the price of goods was reduced by 70 percent. Because of the increase of
01:08 technical equipment, the expenses from the machinery, as I said, to everything that is
01:15 needed to produce, the price of the product has fallen. I would say that the profit is
01:19 much lower. We`re putting money back into the market. So, we have to take action, we
01:24 have to listen to them, otherwise we`ll risk closing down.
01:27 To some of them, it took over 10 hours to come here. They say it was worth it.
01:34 I didn`t believe that we would get this far. But they wanted it this way. When we leave
01:41 here, we have to bring something home, because we can`t support ourselves like this.
01:48 They hope that by the end of the week around, 2,000 trucks will have reached the capital,
01:53 ready to take to the streets.
