00:00 >> Porter, I know it's been a couple of days, but
00:01 just maybe what was the overall takeaway from, I don't know, what was the tough one
00:04 at UCF?
00:05 >> Yeah, just didn't get in the flow on either side.
00:09 I felt like every time we tried to get some momentum going,
00:12 we couldn't get multiple stops in a row.
00:15 We haven't shot the ball well.
00:18 In our last four games, we just have not shot the ball well.
00:21 And when you're not shooting the ball well, you can still win.
00:25 You just gotta stack some stops.
00:27 And we just couldn't stack stops at that place.
00:31 >> How do you, in practice, kinda instill that confidence when you're going through
00:34 a team-wide shooting slump to just keep pushing through and get that back?
00:38 >> You're just constantly shooting with it.
00:41 And I felt like we were good from the foul line.
00:45 We just have not shot the three ball well.
00:47 And just constantly shooting.
00:49 We're gonna shoot a lot, we shot a lot.
00:51 The guys come in, they put the time in.
00:54 We just gotta step up and make the shots.
00:58 And but man, we got good shooters.
01:01 We got guys that we're throwing confidence in them.
01:04 I want them to keep stepping in and making those shots.
01:06 And it'll turn.
01:08 And that's how you instill confidence.
01:10 Rep it out, rep it out.
01:12 Mentally talk to them.
01:13 >> It seemed like the last couple games, there's been a lot more fouls called,
01:18 a lot more free throws.
01:19 Have you noticed that?
01:21 Just a difference in the way the game's been officiated?
01:24 >> Next, sorry.
01:26 I don't mean not to answer questions.
01:27 I'm always available to answer.
01:29 That one's a tough one for me to talk about.
01:32 >> How nice was it to put the free throw kind of conversation to bed,
01:35 at least on the side?
01:36 >> And we really, with our guys, we just repped it out.
01:38 We keep constantly taking more.
01:40 It's what I guys told you about.
01:41 What do you do?
01:42 You just keep repping it, keep talking about it.
01:44 I was talking about how much I wanted to get to the foul line.
01:47 And when they hear their coach say, man, we gotta get there more,
01:49 get there more, means you know you have confidence in them.
01:52 So I think we're 18 for 22.
01:54 >> Coach, is there anything that you saw pregame,
01:58 maybe during warmups that indicated it might be an offense?
02:00 >> Nothing, nothing, nothing.
02:02 Guys were ready.
02:03 They were so locked in, fired up, nothing.
02:07 >> How great is the sense of urgency, being back at home twice this week,
02:11 knowing that you went over to the last time we had this opportunity?
02:13 >> Haven't talked about that from the past, but we've spent a lot of time talking
02:18 about BYU, and I'm excited to talk about a couple questions with them.
02:20 Because they're elite, but our guys, whether it's road or home,
02:26 our guys know that our prep is a big part of it.
02:31 Our prep in this league, knowing what to expect from their offense,
02:35 knowing what to expect from their defense.
02:36 And this is as difficult as a prep as you're gonna play.
02:40 And as we get in talking about BYU,
02:43 they run their offense as fluid as anybody in the country.
02:48 It makes basketball savants
02:52 excited when you see their offense.
02:57 The amount of shooters they have, they're one of the top,
02:59 I think they are one or two in the nation in threes.
03:03 I think the Oklahoma fans are gonna see that you're not gonna stop them from
03:06 taking them, they're gonna take them.
03:09 You're trying to contest them, you're trying to limit them and
03:11 push them out farther, but they're gonna do what they do.
03:15 And they do it extremely well.
03:18 They're older, they run as good offense, they're seventh in the net, but
03:22 defensively, they're also in the top 25.
03:26 They're good on both ends, they're an elite team.
03:28 They're a team that can make, after watching a lot of teams on tape this year,
03:32 they're a team that can make a deep, deep run in this tournament.
03:34 Because they guard, and they shoot, and they're older, and
03:38 they run phenomenal offense.
03:42 >> Losses change so much from year to year.
03:44 Does it help that Latreze played them three years in a row?
03:47 Have you asked him about anything?
03:48 >> Yeah, we've talked to him, and he knows.
03:50 I mean, he knows they're difficult to guard,
03:54 cuz the way they move it, they space it, they're gonna shoot it.
03:57 I mean, they're gonna shoot it from deep, they're gonna shoot it quick,
04:00 they play fast, and then their movement and spacing, their bigs can really pass.
04:04 It is a, and there's a reason why they're so good offensively.
04:11 I mean, they got the pieces, they're well coached.
04:13 And yeah, Trey's guarded them, but it's new year, new thing,
04:18 new system for them, not for them, but for Trey.
04:22 >> You mentioned BYU 7th and NET, did he talk to you guys at all about
04:26 what kind of opportunity this is for a resume builder?
04:28 >> Yeah, we talked about it.
04:29 I mean, they know that we're fighting, we're backs, every game you're backs.
04:33 You're trying to go on a one game win streak.
04:35 Every game is a big NCAA tournament game.
04:40 So it's not the pressure of it, but it's just like, they know how good they are.
04:45 They know it's a quad one win if we can get it.
04:50 They got a lot of respect for BYU.
04:51 They watched them on tape now two days.
04:53 And so it's gonna be a challenge to really get out on their shooters.
05:00 I mean, they all can shoot.
05:02 I don't wanna play the team where everybody can shoot at that level.
05:05 >> The way that they create those looks too,
05:07 it's kinda like the first headache defensively when you're like-
05:10 >> Transitions the first, they push it so fast.
05:14 I mean, they run so hard, they space, and their point guard is elite.
05:20 I think he's one of the best point guards in the country.
05:22 He finds the ball, the ball has eyes when it's in his hand.
05:25 I mean, it's fighting the shooter all the time.
05:26 I think he's terrific, but they all are locked and loaded.
05:33 They all have catch and shoot quick releases.
05:37 They have deep range.
05:39 And I think it's gonna be a great challenge for our defense.
05:41 I think the fans are gonna see a style of play with them and it's gonna,
05:45 we can't hang our head, they're gonna hit threes.
05:47 I mean, you don't average 13 or whatever they're averaging.
05:50 You're not gonna take it away.
05:52 You just hoping to limit it and make them more contested.
05:57 >> What kind of challenge does big guy Khalifa bring just in terms of what he can
06:00 do, not just shooting, but passing the ball as well?
06:02 >> So I think they got two of the most unique centers in the country.
06:07 I think they got this passing big, who's the best passing big.
06:10 He reminded me of the big kid I had at Loyola, Krawick, who could just,
06:14 I mean, he could turn, throw the ball over the top.
06:16 He kind of, you run offense through him.
06:18 And then Traore is one of the best post scoring.
06:21 I mean, I thought he was the key to the win against West Virginia at 24.
06:25 So what a luxury.
06:26 You got a superior passing, facilitating five, and
06:30 you have a superior post block score in that five.
06:34 So I think that's what makes them strong too, is the pieces they have.
06:38 >> I don't know if it's maybe because they're new to the big 12 this year, but
06:41 it seems like they don't really get talked about that much.
06:44 >> I don't know if it's from the West Coast or what, but
06:46 I think in our league, the buzz is there.
06:48 The buzz is there.
06:49 Everybody's within our circles is talking about how well they are.
06:54 They play both sides.
06:55 I mean, they really do.
06:56 They're top 25 defense, top 10 offense.
06:58 Older, veteran, well coached.
07:00 So in our circles, they're talked about.
07:03 I mean, people know how good they are, and
07:05 they're a team that can make a huge run.
07:06 >> The trainer mentioned that ball movement the last couple of days has been
07:08 a big conversation for you guys offensively.
07:10 Maybe just what is the focus tomorrow offensively against BYU?
07:14 >> I just thought we were, I just thought we weren't in sync.
07:20 And when you don't make shots, it doesn't look in sync.
07:24 Trust me, when you start making shots, you look, things are clicking.
07:28 So that's a big part of it.
07:29 It was good to see Trey get back in the flow.
07:33 And Trey got in the flow and got some shots going.
07:37 But I think JV on Lowe's and Lotega, those three, gotta get them to flow.
07:42 I think Rivaldo's continuing to give us great minutes.
07:44 And I think the guys,
07:49 offensively, there's been games we've been really good.
07:53 And there's games where we are, but it's the old Brad Stevens line.
07:57 You can overanalyze every number.
07:59 If it comes down to it, it's a shot making game.
08:02 We gotta make some shots.
08:04 >> I hate to fall back onto the Caden Cooper question, but
08:07 how's he looking in practice?
08:09 Is he closer to really getting that- >> Still working hard, still working hard.
08:13 Phenomenal attitude.
08:14 And you never know, you never know, cuz I think he's moving.
08:19 Yeah, he could be.
08:20 And I just think he's doing really well.
08:25 We're really pleased with every single day he comes ready to practice and learn.
08:30 And I think he'll be ready when his shot comes, because his attitude's been great.
08:35 >> Porter, when you play a team that shoots like this,
08:36 is there any discussion of don't try to out shoot them?
08:41 When they're hitting a few threes, don't try to go down and force them.
08:44 >> It's interesting you said that, because we watched a team play against them on
08:47 tape this morning, that they came and hit three threes in 40 seconds.
08:52 And then the other team, cuz it sometimes gets daunting.
08:55 You throw up nine points in 30 seconds, you just can't do that.
08:59 So you don't wanna get in that, but we've gotta step in and make some threes.
09:03 We've, what, we hit three against such a, we can't be out shot 14 threes to three.
09:08 That's a huge difference in the game.
09:11 So we can shoot it, we just need to step in and shoot our shot.
09:15 >> When it comes to this new Big 12 scheduling,
09:16 how do you feel like the team has responded to the new-
09:19 >> The new teams?
09:20 >> Mm-hm.
09:21 >> I think they have a lot of confident respect with them.
09:24 There's a lot of respect for the new teams.
09:26 I mean, we've played Cincinnati, we've played Central Florida.
09:29 We've been scouting against BYU, we've seen Houston on TV.
09:32 So I think from the beginning, they knew that all four teams were gonna be right in,
09:37 fit right in with the top conference in the country.
09:40 And I think our guys feel that.
09:43 They were, they had no let up.
09:45 They had a great respect for Cincinnati and Central Florida.
09:48 And I know with this scout, they're gonna have tremendous respect for BYU as well.
09:53 >> They look, they have five guys that average in double figures.
09:56 They have another guy that averages nine.
09:57 So they play, six guys can really score.
10:00 Their offense looks really fluid, is it?
10:02 >> Yeah. >> As it looks.
10:03 >> Yeah, it is good as it looks.
10:05 I mean, they space it, they run it, they move it with a pace, tremendous pace.
10:09 Tremendous point guard facilitator, length shooters.
10:15 They're four man 6'11" who can come off a screen and shoot it.
10:18 I mean, they got tremendous size, length shooters.
10:22 And they're more athletic.
10:23 They're athletic, they can go downhill.
10:25 They're not the slow team.
10:26 They play fast, they are fast.
10:29 It's a, I'm telling you, basketball savants, when you watch them,
10:33 you will appreciate the way they run offense and shoot it.
10:37 >> So defensively, this is gonna be a master game.
10:40 You've gotta play great man to man against them.
10:42 >> We've gotta be able to get to their shooters in transition.
10:45 And then we just can't, we've gotta play possession by possession.
10:48 We just can't have let ups.
10:50 We're gonna try to stay fresh, sorry.
10:51 We're just trying to stay fresh and play a lot of different guys and
10:55 keep them fresh because you have to, they run so hard.
11:00 The ball moves so fast, they're gonna get threes.
11:02 It's not like we're gonna sit here and say, hey, we got a limit and
11:05 have them take 12 threes.
11:06 No, they're gonna still take 35 threes.
11:09 We just gotta contest them.
11:10 We've gotta really get out and guard them.
11:12 >> Going back to ball movement,
11:13 John's had a lot of good high-low looks the past few games.
11:17 Is that something you're gonna kind of try to emphasize against BYU or
11:20 not as much?
11:21 >> Yeah, I think John's one of our better passing bigs.
11:24 I mean, he can really pass.
11:25 And Central Florida ran a handful of zone, and
11:30 John made some really nice passes out of the zone.
11:32 They ran a different coverage, and yeah, John can really pass.
11:38 Looking for John to get some scoring, really want him to score in there as well.
11:43 I think that's one of the things he did before he got here, score.
11:46 So we gotta get him some more looks to score.
11:49 And but he's definitely is done a nice job passing the ball.
