00:00 On this day in space.
00:03 On February 4th, 1995,
00:06 astronauts aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery launched an
00:08 itty-bitty satellite called an Orbital Debris Calibration
00:10 Sphere into orbit around the Earth.
00:13 The satellite measured just 6 inches across, and it was one
00:15 of six spheres that the astronauts deployed
00:17 on mission STS-63.
00:19 The spheres helped NASA calibrate equipment
00:21 like telescopes and radars that were designed to track
00:24 and measure space junk floating around in Earth's orbit.
00:26 The spheres came in different sizes,
00:28 which allowed NASA scientists to calibrate their instruments
00:30 and calculate the size of other objects floating around in space.
00:33 And that's what happened on this day in space.
