00:00 I'm wearing my special Oscar jacket for The One and Only Lily. I don't know you but I'm
00:07 so proud of you and I was so excited to see this nomination. How are you?
00:13 I'm doing okay. I really enjoy getting to talk about this film. It gives me a lot of
00:18 energy because it's an important one.
00:21 Absolutely. It's a long one but it's a long one but a good one.
00:24 Thank you.
00:25 When you find out you're working with the likes of Leo, I mean as an actress you've
00:29 worked with him so hard. You must have watched him in a lot of stuff. How do you keep your
00:32 cool?
00:33 I mean I was shaking our entire first day working together even though he had graciously
00:37 invited me to dinner to try to break the ice and you know demystify himself to me a bit
00:43 maybe. Still it was hard to maintain cool and composed in that first scene but you know
00:50 that passes really quickly. He's so generous. Same with Marty, same with Bob. And you know
00:56 they so much require the collaboration to make sure the scene is at the best it can
01:01 be, the most truthful it can be. So I eventually just had to realise it was a disservice to
01:06 these men if I let myself be too starstruck for too long I was there to do a job.
01:11 But you are calling Martin Scorsese Marty. Marty. Which I think of Back to the Future.
01:17 But that's...
01:18 Mighty McFly.
01:19 He's your mate now. I mean that is pretty epic.
01:22 Yep. So much.
01:24 When you went for a dinner with Leo were you like, by the way just to get that out of the
01:27 way, I loved you in the beach and I loved you in Catcher in the Car.
01:29 You know the beach is the one film of his I didn't see. I'm sorry. Just the one.
01:35 Can we watch it on the plane back?
01:38 Yeah I'll get to it.
01:40 Let's talk about this Oscar nomination. Everyone's talking about it. Your mum and dad were on
01:44 FaceTime, is that right?
01:45 Yes.
01:46 How does it work? Does everyone find out at the same time as you?
01:49 Yeah. You have no inkling beforehand. You're watching it at 5.30 in the morning like everybody
01:55 else.
01:56 It's utterly incredible. Do you go and watch all of the other actresses or have you already
02:00 seen all of them? How does it work?
02:02 I mean I am lucky enough that I've had the time and the access to see all of the other
02:09 work in the category and I'm just blown away. I mean it's stunning to me that I'm in this
02:14 company. That in and of itself is enough of a win. But yeah, we all find out about the
02:21 nominations at the same time. Everybody's been lovely. Flowers have come in from everybody.
02:27 Yeah, it was really delightful. I knew that it was going to be one of those moments that
02:33 you take the mental image of to just keep forever. And when I was FaceTiming with my
02:40 folks, my mom had the camera flipped around on the TV and I'm like, 'Mom, I don't want
02:44 to remember a fuzzy TV. Flip it around. I want to see you and Dad.' And their reaction
02:49 is what made it really special for me.
02:51 And actually they've been supportive throughout your career and you growing up. What would
02:55 you say to your little self that you are sitting here talking to the world press about breaking
03:01 records as well? Breaking down barriers?
03:05 Your dad's right. You know, he used to tease me about that when I was little. I also just,
03:13 I don't know that I want to tell her anything except just to thank her for just being herself.
03:18 I know it was hard for her. I know she got kind of bullied for being a little overly
03:23 exuberant. I know that she felt like maybe there wasn't a place for her in all of this.
03:28 I also just really admire that that chunky little body threw herself around so unapologetically
03:33 on stage and won so many ballet competitions because, you know, just the love of performance.
03:39 It's like she was, she was something.
