00:00 Making protest placards is new to some here, but many people across Germany are worried
00:07 by the far-right's growing strength.
00:10 In the small eastern German town of Dübeln, older women have got together to set up their
00:14 own "Oma gegen Rechts" or "Grannies against the Right" group.
00:19 "We have to stand up to them and we can't be afraid."
00:25 Kindergarten director Ute Berisch is also involved in the group. Because so many people
00:30 here know her, she's been cautious in expressing her political opinions up to now.
00:35 "For example, I've hesitated occasionally about what I put on my WhatsApp status and
00:40 that kind of thing. So I think, hmm, they will be able to see that."
00:44 But many people's views changed when reports emerged of a clandestine far-right gathering
00:49 involving AfD politicians among others. Participants allegedly discussed expelling millions of
00:55 people with non-German roots, including citizens.
00:58 "I find it really gruesome. I can't imagine how you can have ideas like that. It's inexplicable
01:07 to me. The fact that this meeting took place and the fact of what was discussed there deeply
01:17 shocked and emotionally affected me. It finally prompted me to do something."
01:27 It led Donata Postmann to set up a local branch of "Grannies against the Right". Over 20
01:33 women have now joined the group in Döbeln. And there's still no let-up in interest.
01:39 "It's like being buoyed up on a wave. The fact that there are others involved, people
01:45 across Germany and in Austria and in Switzerland, I immediately feel like I'm part of something
01:51 bigger."
01:53 These women want their grandchildren to grow up in a democratic society. And they hope
01:58 their protests will help prevent the far-right from making further electoral gains.
