Dramatic drone footage shows one of the most scenic roads in Britain - just metres from a cliff edge.

Local resident Philip Sheath, 65, took the aerial videos of Military Road on the Isle of Wight.

The footage has received significant attraction as he originally posted it to 'Save The Military Road' Facebook group - which has 2,200 members.

In October Isle of Wight Council rejected proposals for a 26m-long (85ft) wall to stabilise the area because of the possible environmental impact.

Philip says the "amazing" road is "a huge tourist attraction" - but it has been left unnoticed until recently just how close it is to eroding.

He explained: "With every coach holiday having a drive along here on its itinerary, there are many motoring events on the island and part of the rallies they hold will involve this road, in particular the scooter rally in August which is a huge event.

"As for how the road seems to be closer, no one really knows as it doesn’t seem to have been photographed from above many times.''

Named one of the most scenic drives in the country by Visit England, Military Road runs along the island's south-west coast.

Its route ventures through protected habitats, including an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and Scientific Sites of Special Interest.

Philip's most recent sighting of the road was January 31st.

Philip, from Sandown, said: "The whole area is very popular with walkers although the paths have all had to be moved many times due to erosion.

"No one has any confidence in the council who seem to just keep fobbing us off.
Although hopefully they may take notice now.

"Whatever happens will be huge whether it’s allowing the erosion to destroy the road or whether someone has the guts to re route the road..

"Whichever one of these happens will have a huge impact."

A public meeting to discuss the future of Military Road will take place on 11 February.
