Transcript
00:00 - Now I... - You're dead.
00:02 - It's all erased?
00:04 - No more criminal records, no more getting arrested just for being naked,
00:08 or just usual stuff, you know, being naked, getting drunk, casual stuff.
00:11 - So we're all gonna die.
00:13 - Watch me!
00:14 - As an audience, we don't get to know too much backstory about your characters.
00:22 I'm curious as to how much backstory you all knew,
00:25 and as an actor, is it easier or is it harder when that information is given to you
00:29 versus when you have to fill in the gaps yourself?
00:31 - Oh, interesting. I don't know where to begin.
00:35 I usually have a pretty clear backstory before I show up to work,
00:42 but then if you've created this backstory, then Michael Bay will just be like,
00:46 "No, you're an orphan! Go!"
00:48 You're just like, "Wait, what?"
00:50 So it's all sort of thrown out the window, and that's a good thing.
00:54 Sometimes it's good to sort of kill your darlings and surrender to a process you're unfamiliar with.
01:00 And I think we all sort of felt like this was a process none of us were familiar with.
01:04 Michael Bay has got a kind of chaotic style of filmmaking
01:07 that he somehow finds a way to make it all galvanize in the edit room,
01:10 but to be there is wild.
01:13 - I prefer to have my own, you know, because it makes it more personal.
01:18 But yeah, at the end, you're there shooting, and everything goes away
01:23 because, you know.
01:25 - You can also always have your own and never really tell your director what you're really--
01:29 - That's true.
01:31 - But we didn't have that conversation with Michael.
01:33 I mean, this is not a--I mean, it's an action-packed movie,
01:37 and you will get to know every single one of the characters,
01:39 and I think you'll fall in love with every single one of the characters,
01:41 but it's not a drama piece.
01:43 - You can say it's not designed for the Telluride Film Festival. We get it.
01:47 - It's an action film.
01:49 - It's challenging to fill in the gaps, but it's actually more fun that way.
01:55 We sort of given these outlines--
01:59 in this movie, I think we were given sort of an outline,
02:01 and then we could kind of help fill it in.
02:03 But the great part about this film is that, like,
02:06 Michael, as we were sort of saying before,
02:08 like, he is trying to get back to sort of character work
02:12 and, like, diving in on their storylines,
02:15 and so it was kind of fun to collaborate in that way about the little details,
02:20 the small things that might sort of unravel later on in subsequent sequels.
02:26 And so it was cool to lay, like, little Easter eggs and things in there
02:30 to, you know, see how it plays out.
02:33 - And I think the movie is all about, like, our evolutions also.
02:37 Like, no matter what, if you see perfectly and precisely our backstory,
02:41 I don't know if it's just changing a lot of things.
02:43 It's just like they've been picked up from that guy,
02:46 and they start the movie in a certain way,
02:48 and they really end the movie totally different and totally changed.
02:51 And I think that's the joy for everybody,
02:55 to just, like, change your arc and change your character,
02:58 especially maybe us two.
03:00 Like, we really change. We really go somewhere else.
03:03 We're kind of like the soldiers, training and very tough and cold.
03:08 And then we go to emotions.
03:10 And I think we had fun to just, like--especially in the Michael Bay movie--
03:13 - Yeah, to be able to access that. - You know, to work on, like, emotions.
03:16 - Bonjour. - Hi. Hey.
03:20 - I don't know if I should ask this question directly to you
03:22 or to everyone except for you,
03:24 but I grew up knowing you from "Waiting" and "Van Wilder"
03:27 and then "Deadpool," these goofy characters.
03:29 But then I've seen you in things like "Amyville Whore"
03:31 and "The Voice Isn't Buried."
03:33 I'm curious, how does your real-life personality compare
03:35 to those sillier characters that you play?
03:38 - Oh, I don't know. I mean, I always try to look for the fun in things.
03:42 I make a lot of jokes, a lot of dumb jokes,
03:45 a lot of fine jokes, I suppose.
03:47 I don't know. I don't know. I don't know.
03:50 I think I'm closer to those guys than, like, the hardcore drama stuff, I guess,
03:55 'cause, you know, life is short.
03:57 It's later than you think. Enjoy yourself.
03:59 - We're all gonna die.
04:01 We may as well do it while we're alive.
04:03 - Watch me! Hold!
04:05 - Sounds fun, right?
04:07 - If you could add another member to your Six Underground,
04:11 who would it be?
04:12 And it could be anyone from Jason Bourne to an Austin Powers,
04:14 everything in between. - Oh, wow.
04:16 - What do you think would round out the team?
04:18 - I'd take Vanisher from "X-Force."
04:19 I felt like his character arc wasn't fully explored.
04:22 - Right.
04:23 - And also, who doesn't want to be hanging out with Brad Pitt?
04:26 Right? - Hmm.
04:28 I would say Oscar Isaac.
04:30 - Okay. - Nice!
04:32 - From "Trouble Frontier." - Nice.
04:34 - What's the name Josh Brolin did in "Trouble?"
04:37 - Cable? - Yeah, yeah, yeah.
04:39 I love that guy. - Yeah, yeah.
04:40 Brolin's a good guy, too. - Oh, yeah, yeah.
04:42 - We need just to be together.
04:44 We just need to have, like, another adventure all together,
04:47 'cause we had so much fun.
04:49 And it's stupid, because you always,
04:52 as a journalist, hear that, like,
04:54 "We're such a good family, and we're, like, so close to each other."
04:57 So it doesn't-- people doesn't believe us anymore,
05:00 but that was really the case.
05:01 - It's really hard sometimes jumping on--
05:04 because we go, you know, usually from--
05:06 hopefully from project to project to project,
05:08 and you're working with new families every time,
05:10 and it's not always as easy of a thing to do.
05:15 And we really, like, fell in love with each other.
05:18 And we had to as well, but, like, we genuinely had a great time.
05:22 And, like, even on this press tour, like,
05:24 being able to see each other's faces and, like,
05:26 remember what we went through, 'cause this movie was such a crazy--
05:29 wild ride, man.
05:31 It's just--it's just amazing.
05:34 - None of us will be remembered.
05:36 - What's about to happen, Will?
05:37 - Good things can't erase the bad ones, right?
05:39 - Who the hell are you?
05:41 [dramatic music]
05:42 - We're no one.
05:43 [dramatic music]
05:45 - [laughs]
05:46 I knew it wasn't true at work.
05:47 I mean, I wasn't sure, sure.
05:48 I had a suspicion, but I, uh--
05:50 [breathing heavily]
05:51 God, this is all so fucking dangerous.
05:53 [dramatic music]
05:54 (upbeat music)
