00:00 Jay Leno is taking legal steps to protect his wife Mavis Leno's financial
00:04 assets amid her battle with dementia. The former host of The Tonight Show
00:09 files for a conservatorship of his wife's estate in a Los Angeles court on
00:13 January 26th according to legal records obtained by E! News. According to NBC
00:18 News, the TV personality's petition seeks a substituted judgment to approve
00:22 estate planning and implement a testamentary plan that he believes his
00:27 wife would execute if she were capable. Stating in the docs, "Unfortunately, Mavis
00:32 has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for
00:36 several years. As Mavis's current condition renders her incapable of
00:40 executing the estate plan, Jay has petitioned the court to be appointed
00:44 conservator of Mavis's estate for the sole purpose of filing a petition for
00:48 substituted judgment on her behalf in order to ensure her desires concerning
00:52 the disposition of her assets upon her death are realized." According to NBC
00:57 News, Jay states in the petition that he believes Mavis consents to him being
01:01 appointed conservator of her estate. Record show a follow-up court hearing is
01:05 set for April 9th. The couple have been married for 43 years but the 73 year
01:10 old comedian has never spoken publicly about his wife's health battle. However,
01:14 the former Hollywood host has often affectionately mentioned his wife on The
01:17 Tonight Show, which he hosted between 1992 and 2009 and then again between 2010
01:23 and 2014. Mavis has also accompanied her husband to red carpet events, most
01:29 recently last November when they attended the Improv Comedy Club 60th
01:32 anniversary show in Hollywood. During an appearance on the Kelly Clarkson show
01:36 last year, Jay shared his secret to a long-lasting marriage. "I think the cool
01:40 thing I found out about you too is you and Mavis, your wife of 40 years."
01:45 Why is that crazy? That is crazy! Why is that crazy? "It doesn't exist anymore. Everybody has a fight and you get divorced."
01:53 No, no, we have a great time. You have to marry a normal person. That's, that's, no, no, I mean it.
01:59 Because I meet guys all the time, you know, and they'll say, "I met this girl, she's
02:01 crazy, but the sex is unbelievable. It's unbelievable." And I go to them, "Yeah, you're
02:06 right, but when the sex is over, she's still crazy." So now you have 23 hours of
02:12 crazy until your good crazy hour comes back again. So it depends how long you can go.
02:17 And, and, you know, and the trick is just, you know what I say, it's a quote I, it's
02:21 a quote I gave to Drew Barrymore because she asked me this question. I said, "Always
02:24 marry your conscience. Marry the person you wish you could be, you know, who was
02:28 kind and maybe whatever faults you have doesn't have those faults." And that's
02:33 worked out for me. So to me, I married the perfect person. That's really good advice. Yeah, it worked out good. That's amazing.
