00:00 Britain's Prince Harry on Friday withdrew his libel claim against the Associated Newspapers,
00:06 with his spokesperson saying he wanted to focus on his family's safety.
00:11 The youngest son of King Charles sued the Mail on Sunday newspaper publisher after a
00:15 2022 article stated he only offered to pay for police protection after bringing a separate
00:22 legal fight against the British government.
00:25 Harry, his wife Meghan Markle and their two children now live in California after they
00:30 stepped down from royal duties in 2020 with his protection removed from that moment.
00:36 The report accused the royal of attempting to mislead the public about his willingness
00:40 to pay for the policing himself.
00:43 London's High Court had ruled last July that the report was defamatory.
00:48 But in December, the Prince lost his appeal to have the paper's defence thrown out, meaning
00:53 he would have likely had to give evidence at London's High Court later this year.
00:57 The Daily Mail, the Mail on Sunday's sister title, says Harry abandoned the case hours
01:03 before a document deadline and is obliged to pay their costs of £250,000, along with
01:09 his own fees.
01:11 His claim against the British government over the decision to strip him of automatic police
01:16 protection was heard in December, with a ruling expected in the next few months.
01:21 The Prince's spokesperson said the case against the government was Harry's focus and not the
01:25 libel action, which would "give a continued platform to the Mail's false claims all those
01:31 years ago."
01:32 Both Harry's lawyer and a spokesperson for Associated declined to comment.
