The government would revisit all MOUs pertaining to foreign labourers with 15 source countries, says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.
The Home Minister said after attending the Third Joint-Meeting between the Home Ministry and Human Resources Ministry on Migrant Workers Management on Tuesday (Jan 16) that they will review various elements which include costs, contract conditions, health and among others.
00:00 One more thing that we agreed on was that we have 15 resource countries that provide us with labor.
00:09 15 resource countries.
00:11 But the top three are Bangladesh, Indonesia and Nepal.
00:18 This represents almost 77 percent.
00:21 From the number of what now? Two million.
00:24 Now we have two million foreign workers that we have released to the Ministry of Labor.
00:29 There are a few more resource countries that provide labor to five important sectors.
00:36 Now, the problem is that we have already exceeded our services.
00:44 Which means that we have enough.
00:46 We have enough losses.
00:48 We have enough construction.
00:50 From our record, the data shows that the number of requests and inputs is sufficient.
00:57 There is still a deficit.
00:59 There is a high need for less input.
01:01 Farming and agriculture.
01:07 We discussed this in detail.
01:12 But we also found that there is a need for us to revisit the MOU that we signed with the resource countries.
01:21 There is a need, based on the reasons that we discussed.
01:26 So, the second decision that we reached was that we will explore Malaysia in the direction of revisiting or re-examining the agreement that we established with the 15 resource countries.
01:46 Because it covers various things.
01:49 Elements such as uranium, costs, contract terms, health, etc.
01:57 So, the MOU is a document of understanding that is dynamic, not static.
02:04 And today we agree that we will re-examine the need to examine the evidence of the agreement with the resource countries.
