00:32 season wrapping up, looking ahead to the playoffs. And this is time to get in on the action with
00:37 FanDuel, America's number one sports book. Right now, new customers get $150 in bonus
00:42 bets guaranteed when you place a $5 bet. All right, Bob, let's get to it. We're going to
00:49 start with the Memphis Grizzlies and such a disappointment, first of all, that John Moran
00:53 is done for the season. What do you think his future is? He's still young, obviously,
00:59 and his talent is unlimited. His ceiling is very high. He'll bounce back, I think. I like to think
01:08 he had learned something from his suspension and the reason for it. And he's growing and maturing,
01:13 I'd like to think. I can't verify that. But he came back with his skills intact,
01:21 and now he gets hurt. So I mean, I was just thinking as we were preparing, what a disastrous
01:26 like 18 months or, you know, just, you know, the guy was riding the top of the world. He was young,
01:30 it was everything was going his way. The team was improving. They were, they were in the middle. I
01:35 mean, they weren't going to win a championship, but they were a playoff level team. And, you know,
01:40 with Jackson Jr. is really good. And Damon Bain, who had 32 last night, right, is really good. And,
01:47 you know, and, and the coach, I think, is respected, and they're good. So future,
01:53 he's still young enough to bounce completely back. So I can say,
01:57 and then you had Marcus and last night, and Marcus was feeling it, having another game. Marcus was
02:05 had 23 and 21 minutes. When he got hurt, he made four threes again. Now we know how streaky is on
02:11 threes. Yes, we do. But this is the guy. This is a really useful player when he's when he's
02:20 combining all the night in night out defense and, and, you know, and unpredictable stuff that he
02:25 does. And that disrupts teams with with with legitimate offense. And so but their season is,
02:32 is just blown up in their face now, without without without
02:36 Well, it's too bad, because I look at Memphis as one of those teams I want to watch. You're right,
02:40 they're not going to win the title. And I think as the season progresses, you're looking at the
02:44 Celtics, you're looking at Denver, you like Philly, I still think it's an outside shot,
02:48 but you never know. But I look in Milwaukee, I don't think okay, see is there yet, I think that,
02:56 you know, but I think it's there's really three teams that could win it, my opinion at this time.
03:00 But there's a ton of teams you want to watch. And Memphis was one of those teams. Now,
03:06 maybe without Moran for the rest of the season. You want to see Marcus if the fingers, okay,
03:12 you want to see Bain, you know, a lot of young players in the league, San Antonio is worth
03:17 watching, you know, okay, see certainly worth watching, you know, Orlando, Orlando, you're like,
03:23 right. I like those young players, you know, WWS worth watching, and Sacramento. Oh, yeah,
03:31 let's talk about them. I know you want to bonus. I'm such a suck up to Sabonis the whole family.
03:36 Let me run the stats 37 points, 13 assists, 10 rebounds. The Kings were down by 20 in the first
03:42 quarter. Then they led by 15 in the third. The Pistons have this problem, right? Because that's
03:48 what happened with the Celtics. The Celtics were down by one. Yeah, yeah. So this is this happens
03:54 to the Pistons all the time. This game. We know that the NBA can be a game of runs. People say
04:01 it all the time. But this is this is to the ultimate extreme of any. I mean, just got to go
04:06 out there. They were down 20 in the first they're up 15 in the third Kings. And there's a 35 point
04:13 swing. They lost the lead completely. And they want to win it by 21. Right? I mean, I'm gonna
04:21 I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm going to Ralph Brampton here. I crammed in here. But yeah, but my my
04:28 guy Sabonis, I just totally loved his game. But the first time I ever laid eyes on him in a Gonzaga
04:33 uniform on television, I said, Oh, my God, the kid can play. And of course, Daddy was one of the
04:37 greatest clinicians ever. And, and, of course, I keep reminding people, we never saw the best of
04:46 our beta Sabonis. Because by the time he was, he had several injuries and a couple of that's a vodka
04:53 away ago when we got over here, but he could play this game. And, and the kid is wonderful. So
05:00 anyway, Sacramento Scott, he got they got Fox, they got monk, you know, they got they got people
05:05 that they're a fun team to watch. I mean, if you're if you're a true basketball fan, right,
05:10 you're a true basketball fan, you have to love the European game and what they bring. And we've seen
05:14 it with the I mean, you mentioned the other day, I think you and Jeff were taking if you had the
05:18 international all stars against the States, you know, they I'll give you a sneak stay tuned. You
05:26 might be reading something about that in the near future. I'll just really is that a little preview
05:30 to the old wink wink. Okay, wink, wink, keep your eyes open. You might see something about that in
05:37 the near future somewhere. And a publication near you. The NFL season is wrapping up. But
05:45 there is still time to get on the action with FanDuel America's number one sports book.

06:15 So some notes on the Celtics here and it's the Celtics it's very hard. And believe me, we've
06:29 tried to find criticisms or faux pas or flaws, you know, like what I work on. And it's, you know,
06:38 we've talked about maybe they make a deal in a month, you know, February, the beginning of
06:42 February, maybe they do, maybe they don't, you know, we'd still like to see him get a big man.
06:46 But, you know, I want to talk about Borzingas and his comments on Drew Holiday. He said, quote,
06:51 he deserves the most credit. He has sacrificed the most. And I think for those of us who didn't
07:00 see Drew Holiday play every day with Milwaukee when they won the championship, I mean,
07:06 correct me if I'm wrong, but it was basically the freak then Holiday, right?
07:09 Yes. Okay, now it's Tatum, Brown, Porzingis,
07:14 White, then Holiday. And this guy has no problem with it.
07:19 No, no, really, he is the fifth thought of many nights for all of us and then advance.
07:26 And obviously, this is a very interesting observation from an insider, a teammate.
07:32 I arched an eyebrow when I read it this morning. And not in disapproval or dismay, just oh, man,
07:39 that's a pretty strong endorsement because I think, you know, Porzingis is a very stable,
07:44 you know, very sound thinking young man. Yeah, that was really impressive, really impressive.
07:49 I have to tell you, Garrett, he kind of flew under the radar for me from the beginning. You know,
07:56 that he was I knew he was a good player. I remember UCLA, you know, and all that. And
08:00 that the brothers, you know, the holiday brothers and all that stuff. But and I didn't appreciate
08:04 how good he really was. And in Milwaukee, even last year, and then when people are reading more
08:15 and more praise about how good he is, and we he felt and you know, this is the ultimate fell out
08:20 of the sky if ever, all the Celtic history of transactions, you know, there have been lucky
08:26 things like Don Nelson, you know, for $1,000, you know, okay, waiver wire, whatever, whatever it
08:31 was, maybe even $100. And I read and read what Whitman Yeah, well, Whitman. Yeah, they got what
08:38 man I didn't know what they had to give up or whatever. So I'm a free agent. But the idea,
08:43 the only reason that he is in a Celtic uniform is because Damien Willard held his breath until
08:51 he turned blue and got himself in Portland. This only reason that the Celtics were in any position
08:57 or anybody was in any position to get him. And boy, it's the luckiest break of that type in
09:04 franchise history. They can't take credit for it. They fell out of the sky. All right, so we have
09:10 them. And aren't we happy to have and you know, this, this, this team has really got some, I mean,
09:17 stable individuals, let's face it, you know, white, very mature. And of course, Al, and you
09:23 know, Jalen Brown, who, and we know his future isn't in basketball, you know, when he's done,
09:28 he's got to go save the world, you know, somehow, some way. Oh, sure. No doubt. I mean, you know,
09:33 so anyway, it must be a real relief and pleasure to coach them. They not have to deal with drama.
09:42 Oh, Missoula must be like, I've died and gone to heaven. I mean, it must be guys in around the
09:47 league looking at him and say that lucky son of a bitch. He doesn't have the problem I got with
09:51 with in my locker room. Now, maybe we're naive, and we don't know what's really going on. But I
09:55 think I think it's a very safe observation. So yeah, that they've got, they got all kinds of
10:02 adults in the room. Joe, listen, I mean, we've we've talked about how Joe has the second season
10:08 under his belt. Now he's more comfortable. But he's just got better players to work with. Yeah,
10:15 players don't work for him. They work with him. People have spoken about he's spoken about how
10:19 he sits down with a player and he asked them. He sits down, he'll talk to Okay, I mean, red did
10:25 that. I mean, Bob, you could talk about that the best coaches ask the players, you know, Russ,
10:29 what do you think? When he sits down with holiday and says, Okay, what do you know? What do you
10:36 think? Yeah, yeah. Yeah. What do you think? No, it's not really. It's really true. It's really
10:41 very good. So it do you have a red story about that? Like, maybe? I think more about Russell,
10:49 when he coached, of course, he was a player coach, which means you have help. And this is before they
10:54 had assistance member, right in the blue Russell era. And when and when he coached, and anybody who
11:00 was a player coach, there had been a couple of others. You were your support group where your
11:07 veterans and your your your, your trainer, I think Joe, I think that, you know, buddy, ruin,
11:13 and Joe DeLorean, they kept tracking a files. Russ Bailey's got three, you know, Oh, nice. Okay.
11:22 You know, seriously. And we know that when in that late stage in that in your era of late 60s,
11:29 that supposedly the de facto offensive coordinator was Larry Sink read. And, and, you know, and but
11:35 anybody could make a suggestion. Now, Russell didn't need any help on the defense. We know that
11:40 but but offensive, he was willing to tell me what you think, what do you think of the play?
11:43 What do you think we can do a better play? Oh, yeah. That's, that's the way that was. No,
11:49 red red was a smart people person when was, you know, red, of course, he was a tactician. But we
11:54 all know he had famous seven basic plays and options. And, and his ideal world of basketball,
12:00 you'd never want to play, you'd have you fast break all night long, every single day transition
12:05 and his ideal, you know, world. But he was about people, and how he handled them. And
12:11 he didn't like that word, how he worked with them, you know, and he, he treated any reacted and
12:18 responded to Russell one way, Heintz and another way and Charmin another way, Guzi another way,
12:23 you know, and how much I thought a lot that was, that was Red's great genius.
12:26 Missoula is doing the same thing. And if you look at all the great coaches, Phil Jackson,
12:32 red are back Jackson, Jackson's the same way and out the books. Right? I mean, you know,
12:39 the triangle offense. Thanks, Tex. Okay, that's text. Yeah, now, now how do I handle all of this?
12:45 And I think, who's the quote? I was reading Oh, Vince Lombardi, they had that in the globe the
12:53 other day, you know, the old Vince Lombardi, like, it's not about the X's and O's, man.
12:57 It's about how you handle the handle, right? You didn't like that word. It's about how you relate
13:02 to the players and the people. And even the Packers, what had what five plays?
13:06 Well, the power that power play that off tackle, right? Yeah.
13:14 And then every about an embark with though about 12 passes a game, you know, maybe,
13:19 we know what's coming. Stop it. Yeah, right. Yeah. Student body weight. They said,
13:27 at SC member that yeah, yeah, student body, right. So let's stop. But anyway, so Joe has a great job
13:33 is always got a nice situation here. The is probably the envy, the envy of the league and
13:40 but I'll say, we're talking about teams to watch, right? And the team they just played,
13:46 gave him a hard time gives him a hard time, Indiana. Now they as a rule, they got a guy on
13:51 a team that is I'm glad that there's a play room in the league for somebody like this. TJ O'Connell.
13:58 Yeah, he messes around. He makes he gets in your way. He bothers you. He does. This is what
14:04 Branson was kind of like, I thought, but this guy even more so, you know, I love it that there's,
14:10 you know, there's a role, there's a place for somebody like that, to a degree. Now he's not
14:15 scrapped as a scrappy our guy, Richard, you know, has nights when he, you know, he, he sneaks in for
14:20 offensive rebounds. And how do you get that, you know, they all go on the floor. And of course,
14:25 you know, he's raised on detritus to make threes, we know that, but he can do more than that.
14:29 Right. So it's going to get he's going to have a long shelf life, you know, in the league.
14:34 He won't probably he won't be a Celtic wafer, but but he'll be he'll be in the league,
14:37 he'll have a nice career. And guys like that, there's still room for him.
14:42 Good. I think in a second Indiana game, like Jalen at 40, you know, Tatum get some rest.
14:47 And Joe has said, that's what he's going to do. And, you know, they still almost won the game.
14:51 I mean, there's some questionable calls at the end. Oh, well, that's let's get to that. Yeah,
14:55 let's get to that. But before we you tell me how you want to answer this, because I wrote all of
15:02 this down. On those calls, like the Porzingis call, they said should have been a non call,
15:08 I believe. And that ended up going in and going to the foul line and winning the game.
15:12 So after we'll get to that, but after the game, you get the NBA releases the final two minutes
15:18 and critiques the ref. Right? Yes, they admit that they got all the calls, they admit what they got
15:25 right and what they got wrong. I don't. Yes, I don't like that. Thank you. I don't get the point
15:32 for public consumption. I don't think there should be an internal review. They want to keep track,
15:39 you know, you know, they want to review the refs, they want us monitor them, they,
15:42 they know you want to. And if there's a learning tool that they can use to, to, you know, try to
15:50 help referees make better decisions, you know, in the future, or find out, you know, who screws up
15:58 and who doesn't, that's fine. They should be able to do that. But releasing it to the public and for
16:03 the teams to stew on it. So what what is what good is it going to do? No, no, Missoula right now?
16:10 No, or tomorrow morning or the day after? What good is it going to do? They lost the game.
16:15 They blew the call. Somewhere down the road, they'll be the beneficiary of it. You know,
16:19 it that's the way it is. And they'll get the call. And it probably already had a couple we
16:24 haven't even thought about, you know, you know, what's the point? I agree. And when I read it,
16:30 you know, in the three plays that it'd be in the game was the poor Zingas shouldn't have
16:36 been called for a foul. Oh, heels block on on Brown. So, you know, they said that was clean,
16:45 because it was incidental contact on the top of the head. Then miles Turner should have been called
16:48 for any legal screen. That's my God. I'm sitting here and I'm reading this. And I'm like, we're
16:54 gonna second guess at a legal screen. I mean, for God's sakes. I'm with you, Bob. I mean, it takes
17:01 the power away from the play. It takes a power away from the ref. It hurts your credibility.
17:06 And you know what I say to the Celtics? You know, score more points. You're so damn good right now.
17:11 I mean, if you're gonna sit here bitch about one call, I mean, you didn't have your guy,
17:16 but their guy Halliburton got hurt. So I had a little game, and it came down to the end. But
17:20 I hate it. I hate it. When I first started doing it, I said, What is what is this?
17:26 Oh, it's it's only about how many few years old, right? Two or three years old, maybe they've been
17:32 doing this. I mean, screens were breaking down screens. Forget it. I remember I used to rail 50
17:40 years ago, literally about Will's read. I thought he said a lot of illegal screens, but that's okay.
17:45 That's what I mean. You know, I was, I was young and impassioned. Yeah, well, that's all right.
17:51 But I would get a Hall of Famer there. But I was just like, So what did you think overall? So last
17:56 night with the game? I mean, do you sit there and you look okay? Well, it was a bad column for
18:01 Zingas. That's why they lost the game. Now you try to remember that there's so many things you
18:08 shouldn't be in that position kind of thing. You know, that's what I learned a long time ago when
18:13 I realized, you know, we can see bad calls at the end. And you say, Well, but you put just if you
18:17 put yourself in a position you shouldn't have been in, you know, then you don't have a right to
18:22 complain. That's the way I look at it. But there are times when, you know, it's really egregious.
18:26 And, and, you know, it's going to happen. They're human beings. They're going to blow calls and
18:32 just hope that they're not in the seventh, you know, the final minute of the game seven of the
18:36 playoffs that they have to, you know, that they have to make those kind of decisions. But no,
18:40 no, I used to be more passionate about it. But that was a long time ago. You know, I've seen too
18:46 much. And I understand, I think the kind, you know, the reality of the situation, but the number one,
18:51 the rule by will with them, did you put yourself in a position that you didn't need to be in?
18:56 If you did, then, you know, sorry. Right? I'm with you. Yeah, I want to go back. Can I go back to
19:02 holiday? Because he talked about Missoula using him in the middle of a two one, two. Yeah. So
19:12 that's interesting. So let's break that down. Because he communicates with the people in front
19:17 of him. And the people in the back of them communicate with him. To me, he's kind of like
19:22 a free safety, right? Where he's on the ball? Yeah, no, well, I think you want a guy that's
19:28 got great instincts in that regard. And you know, two one, two, the two most prevalent high school
19:33 zones are two, three and two one, two. And I always thought that two one, two, you should have
19:38 a big you would have a relative a bigger guy than him. You know, right? In the middle of that, yeah,
19:43 you'd want a bigger guy. So that that intrigued I got my attention right away, because I said,
19:48 wow, you know, usually, I mean, it did the two one, two with the guy, the one might be your
19:54 biggest man. And at times, depending on his agility, you know, and this is lateral mobility,
20:00 but but but interesting that, you know, it would, you know, in other words, you thought it might be
20:04 cuz Ingus in the two one, two, and the back guys would be Tatum and Brown or who is on the floor,
20:10 Alan him? No, anyway, interesting. I'm gonna keep an eye out for this now. You know, because I have
20:16 to say one thing that I don't keep an eye out for very often is, is if is switching defenses in the
20:21 NBA, you know, you see it college every night, that's different. But you know, the fact that you
20:26 can use zones and zones have been a problem for the Celtics. It'd be nice. Wouldn't it be interesting
20:31 if it turns out to be an asset, because it has not been since the rule was instituted, that I
20:35 can say that they've never been good use of the zone, and they've been hurt by the zones. And so
20:41 this is interesting. I like this. I mean, I can something else to focus on. What do you think of
20:46 white in holiday as a defensive backcourt? I don't know who's better on paper, what I have to
20:53 think about, I have to go examine, like, teams plus teams. It's awful good. And, you know, they're
21:00 both surprisingly good, I think. I mean, we just don't focus on that. You know what I mean? Yeah,
21:04 no, they are. They're they these are, these are pros. They're not perfect. You know, obviously,
21:10 guys can score against them. But but white, particularly that this shot block thing is just
21:16 blows my mind. Him. Yeah, what he's done this year, we're blocking shots out of the position
21:23 out of the guard position. But no, it's good. They're in good hands. Obviously, I don't know
21:29 that there's a better defensive duo in the backcourt in the league. Hey, now that it's summer,

22:55 Robert, you have been on the Knicks trade. That trade that they made, you were the only one that
23:04 was on it. They won five in a row. They've not just won five in a row, Gary. The margins of
23:12 victory in this order of those five games, six, 16, 36, 16, 28. They're beating the last one of
23:25 the last five games by 20 points a game. And Ananobi, well, he was last, you know, he was hot.
23:32 Last night he was hot. He had 23. He's at 17, 11, 11, 9, 23. But you know, he was obtained because
23:39 he was, they wanted to improve their defense. And they're getting a bonus with him as a three point
23:44 shooter as well. But he's, you know, he didn't even have, he started immediately, by the way,
23:48 there wasn't even a without even a practice, you know, he still goes into the lineup.
23:52 Now, I'm not going to say it's equivalent. But, you know, being historically minded,
24:00 I'm a history major, you know, I'm being historically minded. First thing I thought of
24:05 was a the most significant in season trade in the Knick history, which was obtaining Dave
24:11 DeBusch a few days before Christmas in 1968, and set in motion a six year run of the Knicks winning
24:18 two championships and losing in the finals. And, and I'm not saying he's going to have that kind
24:26 of effect, you know, of a Hall of Famer. But it is the most significant instant, you know,
24:34 shot of adrenaline that that that Knicks have had since 1968. That's, I mean, this is a and,
24:41 and by the way, Toronto's happy with the trade on their end. They're happy already. Barrett,
24:46 you know, Barrett's going home, you know, he's a he's a Canadian. He may even be a Torontonian.
24:51 I'm not sure about that. But and and quickly, who you know, last year was the you know, the
24:56 favorite son is well off to a good start with them. They're happy. So yeah, they're both both
25:04 teams are smiling with the hey, didn't we do a good job? So that good fam.
25:08 Right? Do you put the Knicks in the Orlando OKC category?
25:12 Well, if they're going to win, win by 20 points, again, they elevated themselves clearly. And I
25:19 think their self their self confidence, their confidence and their self esteem. That's the word
25:26 I'm saying is shot up dramatically in in last, you know, since in these games, how could it not?
25:33 And I've said all along, I've always said I'm not alone. I'm one of the many to say
25:39 it's good for the league to have the Knicks good. Oh, no doubt. Oh, good. And any sport,
25:45 it's good, but it's good. And it's particularly good in the NBA because New York is a polarizing
25:50 entity in all things. So now you're going to have people that, you know, that go hate the Knicks,
25:55 but they're going to watch them to hate them as well as the people. Yeah, I mean, you know,
26:00 there is too much. There is no more loyal. Maybe you can give me a couple of equals, but nobody
26:09 there's no more loyal fandom than the Knicks who have suffered, you know, now for one playoff
26:16 victory since 1999. You know, when one one, I think, and whatever it is, it's bad. And they
26:23 keep coming, spending that money, and it's money. And they keep coming and God love them. So
26:31 they deserve something good to root for. So I'll tell you, I'll tell you this. In all my experience,
26:38 there was nothing quite. It was a special flavor about it. The most interesting rivalry and moments
26:45 to go to the Boston Garden and all my time with the early 70s when the Knicks were good and the
26:49 Celtics were good. And, and this garden wasn't selling out every night in those days. And the
26:55 Knicks fans that you would have at least one third of the building would be because they were all
27:01 these New York college kids from BU and Northeastern and BC and Jersey and that we're going
27:08 to, you know, the cheer for the Knicks. And it was like a college atmosphere was it was just electric.
27:13 It was wonderful. Anyway, I welcome the Knicks into the into the hunt. Okay, I welcome them into
27:18 the hunt. So are the Knicks your favorite visiting team since you've been covering the Celtics?
27:25 Um, the that's a very good question. You know, this, the Philly rivalry was great in the bird,
27:32 you know, Oh, yeah. And certainly a game seven and 81 was, I say, the most emotional game I've
27:41 ever covered in the end and all those years and nothing quite like it. That was good. The Lakers,
27:47 of course, away. So, right. You know, I mean, I, but I don't want people to forget that people know,
27:53 you know, they associate, you know, the quiz now time so much time is elapsed since the Knicks have
27:57 been, you know, you know, whereas people are more willing to remember, there's more people can
28:02 remember when the Celtics and the Lakers were the item. So they're in there. It was good. I don't
28:07 want people, you know, I want people to know how great that was. And it would be cool if we could
28:10 ever well, you're not going to have that kind of atmosphere because now they sell Excel out.
28:15 Those tickets aren't available that were available 50 years ago, but you still would have a real buzz
28:20 if the Knicks were good. Yeah. But whenever you have Boston, New York, it's good for business.
28:25 Yeah, it is. And that's good to have New York good and, and, and any, and anything. So this is good.
28:31 Now we'll see if this is sustainable. But once again, Brunson, no Brunson and continues to,
28:37 you know, prove that he's an all-star and, and, and Randall, there's such controversy about Randall,
28:42 but boy, he, some nights he's a, he's a beast. He's what do you think Tim's is doing? Right.
28:48 Well, he's always been a good, you know, defensive coach. I just think they've got enough,
28:54 have accumulated a better roster period. He's, he's, I don't think he's changed too much in any
29:02 way. He's going to do it his way. And, and, you know, he's a hard nose, relentless,
29:06 defensive oriented guy, but he just, he's been, he's got a long history now, man. He's got,
29:15 I mean, he's got, he's, he's become, he's come a long way since I see him state that he's,
29:20 I'll tell you that. So I remember him from Salem state. No, I learned about him after the fact
29:24 Harvard a little, not much, but, you know, I got to know him a little bit when he was here
29:31 and it is, you know, it's much more interesting guy to people, you know, people put them in a
29:36 stereotypical, you know, box. He's just a life where he should sleep on a couch and that,
29:40 right. You know, and, and he didn't mind projecting that image, but, but there's more to
29:44 him than that. He's a, he's a good person. Yeah. He's a very good person. I liked him when he was
29:49 with the Celtics and I liked the fact that he's finding success. And it seems to me the Knicks
29:53 like to play for him. Yep. You know, because guys, you know, I was just wondering if you learned a
29:59 little bit, you know, like Larry said, I mean, he was in Chicago for a while and ended up in the
30:03 Knicks, you know, Bird said three years, people are done listening to me. That's the biggest thing
30:07 with NBA coach. You know, you can be a hard ass, but man, you cannot burn out. You cannot burn
30:12 these guys out. Well, you know, that was it. That was, that, that, that became the Bill Fitch MO,
30:18 you know, it wasn't, I know, I know. Yeah. And, and, you know, we were talking earlier about
30:23 people person, you know, he didn't, he didn't bother too much with that. You know, he didn't
30:28 bother too much with that. And him was, it was about the X's and O's and, and I'm saying he was
30:33 a bad person. I liked him. We got along great, but you know, he wore, he wore a mountain. I, I
30:41 insist that by 1983, the only guy of consequence, he ended a bench didn't matter, but the only guy
30:48 of consequence who hadn't tuned him out was Larry. And, and there were ding dong,
30:52 the witch is dead was the feeling when, when he left and they got Casey, who they all loved.
30:58 Right. Everybody loved Casey and, and, you know, and Kumbaya, you know, guess what? Two rings in
31:03 three years. And, and you know, there was Casey definitely gets credit for that. And the fact
31:10 that they, he didn't know what to do with the 87 team when, when, when he needed to play kids,
31:15 he has to take the blame for that. So, yeah. Or the good, the great story is Larry starts to talk.
31:22 Casey says, hang on, Larry, I'm the coach. You do what Larry says. I love that story.
31:28 Before we let you go during our conversations, I always love to get out of memory lane.
31:35 You mentioned like the, the, the Zigfried and, and, and the different personalities on that team
31:40 that was coached by Russell. Yes. Who had, I, whenever I think about that crew, I always think
31:45 of like John Havlicek, who was my favorite player of all time. He was my hero. I worshipped him,
31:49 but I always remember that like John had to have hangers home. I was told like in a certain way,
31:54 like he, you know, and then, you know, in that, then he had another guy like Cowens who was like,
31:59 just, you know, a wreck, you know, but like, who is the most intriguing personality of, of that
32:08 group, that group. Yeah. That's a very good question. And, and I think Satch might be the
32:16 answer. My everlasting image, two things. He, he kept the adhesive tape industry in business all
32:24 by himself. He famously had the most heavily taped ankles in the history of mankind. I saw it. I mean,
32:33 it was just couldn't believe. The other thing is on the road, he did all his reading on the road
32:40 because he had so much going on with business opportunities at home. He didn't have time for
32:45 it, but I, my everlasting image of Satch is while he's getting taped, he's reading a paperback
32:51 on the training table. And, and, and he, he read incessantly on the plane and on, on, on,
32:58 and took his book right into the locker room and read while I was getting taped,
33:01 read before again. And, you know, an erudite and I go to a radio announcer voice, Satch, you know,
33:07 Oh yeah. Professor, very professorial. Oh, very erudite man, professorial, whatever word do it,
33:14 cerebral, but great sense of humor. And, and as well, just a class and, and just a warm embracing
33:22 person. Yeah. So he might be the answer to that in that group, the, the, the wacko, you know,
33:29 the high wire I covered. Well, I, it was one set of someone else in, in baseball that he's,
33:39 he makes coffee nervous. Well, that would have been, that would have been Larry Siegfried.
33:44 Siggy was a high wire guy, you know, and of course John was Mr. Unflappable. So the answer
33:52 to that, I would say is, is Satch. Yeah. That's a great answer. And it's also, I, you know,
33:58 if you did a comparison of the players from the sixties, fifties, sixties, even into the seventies,
34:06 because I don't, I mean, Tommy made a lot of money as an insurance guy. I think John was in the,
34:11 got into the candy business. A lot of guys had other jobs. I mean, I remember the great Rico
34:17 Petrucelli telling me that, you know, he was pumping, he was pumping gas in the off season
34:22 because he bought a gas station. I remember that happening. Yeah. He briefly got into the fast food
34:28 business. Yeah. And then he told me one time, God, I love that guy. He people didn't know,
34:35 but it was so cold out. And this was back when you had people coming out and pumping your gas,
34:39 he had a ski mask on and he's out like pumping gas. And yeah, how can I help you?
34:45 You know, I got into the funeral homes, I believe are nursing homes, right? So nursing homes.
34:51 Now you do have play Dawson's in the field when you have players like today, like LeBron,
34:58 who's in the movies, you know, or things like that, but that's what they're interested in.
35:01 They don't need the money. I think what made players interesting, they needed the money.
35:09 They needed a second job. Cousin had a gas station. He needed a cousin in the back early 50s. And
35:15 Charmin, they got into the business there briefly there. Oh, yeah, they all needed a job.
35:19 Famous, they all needed to get jobs and the off season. And in the football,
35:25 Johnny Unitas supposedly laid the floors for about half his team in the off season. Right?
35:30 Yeah, that's what I'm, you know, you read. So that the world is so entirely and utterly different in
35:36 so many ways, you know, and there's no, you know, the famous thing in the playoffs would come and
35:41 Ramsey would supposedly write $5,000 on the blackboard, this or whatever the fuck some would
35:47 be, the share would be if they want. And, and, you know, that was supposed that was the incentives
35:53 was to carry them to the playoffs. And they could use that money. You know, there wasn't any joke
35:56 about it. I ran at 65, 66. So yeah, that's that's the world they came from. And I, you know, I,
36:03 I keep reminding people that when I covered the team in the early 70s, that they, they all parked
36:11 at the Hilton and got the van over there was a Hilton let them park there when they're going
36:16 on a trip. So I saved the parking fee at Logan, which was $5. Right? Yeah, well, that was $5.
36:23 They didn't have to spend. And it was not a joke. No, I mean, no, it's a different and I think I
36:30 had a paid $5. But now, you know, athletes, sometimes you're you're a sport. And I'm not
36:37 saying one way is better than the other. It's just now professional athletes, and they make a lot of
36:42 money and they deserve every dime. But they're kind of like it's like, it's about being that
36:48 player that persona all year round. Yeah, no, I mean, you can have other jobs, you know, you have
36:54 other interests and other investments. But, you know, if you're a good point, you know, Tommy
36:59 Heintz, he was playing today, he would be Tommy, he would be making a lot of money. And he'd be
37:05 making I don't know what we have $100 million contract or whatever. And he'd be Tommy Heintz.
37:10 And year round, he wouldn't be Tommy Heintz insurance sales. Well, you know what, it's the
37:14 I guess the word we're seeking was brand you you become a brand you become a brand. And you and
37:18 right, that's 12 months. That's 24 7365. Your brand. And that's, and that didn't exist. And
37:25 even like magic, like magic got involved and did very well business wise. But I think that magic
37:30 brand enabled that business to succeed. It was like magic to get in the business to make money.
37:37 The business brings me in because they need me as a brand. No, very good point. Absolutely. Yeah.
37:43 Interesting stuff, Bob. I love these chats. I gotta go get water out of my basement.
37:48 Well, I'm gonna check mine, but I'm usually pretty lucky there. Thanks.
