1 Spectator's Fatal Crash @ Chimay 1992

The ultra-fast circuit of Chimay recorded two fatal accidents on Sunday, 28 June 1992, during the 61st edition of the Grand Prix des Frontières, fourth round of the 1992 Belgian Procar series. These fatalities were the first, since Yvo Grauls was killed in May 1972.
Near the end of the first heat of the Belgian Procar meeting, reserved to the Division I and II, the Honda Civic V-TEC bearing the race number #26, driven by Michel Maillien went out of control on the approach to the second chicane, along the Rue Thiérissart in Saint-Remy, Chimay, and crashed into a crowd. A race marshal and several spectators were injured. One of them died shortly later at hospital. The name of the victim was not released.
One of the competitors, Pascal Witmeur had previously warned the organizers that the spectators who had taken place at the second chicane, were standing in a dangerous place. The meeting attracted a very large crowd, that lined the whole track, even in prohibited areas. Pierre-Alain Thibaut in a Audi V8 Quattro was the winner of the Division I and winner overall of the heat; Michel Delcourt in an Opel Calibra won the Division II class.
A few hours later, the meeting was marred by another tragedy, which happened during the subsequent second heat, resulting in the death of renowned Belgian driver Guy Nève. Following these two fatalities, the organizers decided to stop the program. The second heat was stopped and did not restart, the following Procar events were canceled.
