00:10 depressingly at our own wallets while we make vague judgements at the 10 most expensive

00:15 video game sales ever.

00:17 For this list we'll be looking at a broad spectrum of high priced video game sales,

00:21 ranging from interesting and noteworthy to record breaking and ludicrous.

00:25 A few ground rules, only one entry per game and try not to cry.

00:41 Contra A term you're going to hear a lot on this

00:49 list is water score.

00:51 Water W A T A are the leaders in collectible video game grading and certification, and

00:56 it's their graders that decide a games water score based on the condition of the box, seal,

01:02 cartridge and all other elements to the games quality.

01:05 A water score of 9.8 is essentially the highest score available to a retro game, it's rare

01:11 and it's difficult, and one copy of Contra on the NES was awarded this incredibly rare

01:17 9.8 and managed to sell for $150,000.

01:22 The rarity of this particular cartridge is what awarded it such a high sale price.

01:27 I mean most games have imperfections straight off the assembly line so to score a 10 is

01:31 near impossible.

01:38 Twisted Metal This game is in somewhat of a renaissance

01:45 thanks to the Twisted Metal series dropping, but let's jump way back to 1995 when the first

01:51 copies of Twisted Metal on the PS1 were printed.

01:54 The long box was the original style of release for PS1 games, and it lasted less than a year

02:00 before the more well-known CD cases were released.

02:03 In fact it came in a ridged long box which was only used on roughly 49 PS1 games in total

02:09 before it was discontinued.

02:11 But for the low low price of $156,000 somebody was able to get one of these rare copies of

02:18 Twisted Metal with a water score of 9.6.

02:31 Super Mario Bros 3 Another equal sale of a whopping $156,000.

02:44 Now for a price tag like this you'd expect a 9.6 or a 9.8, but this copy of Super Mario

02:50 Bros 3 scored a 9.2.

02:54 Don't get us wrong, this is a great score, but the price tag comes from a very very rare

02:59 imperfection.

03:00 Some initial copies of the game went out before the box art was fixed, and in these very rare

03:05 initial copies the word "Bros" is printed on the left side of the cartridge where it

03:09 obscures Mario's hand.

03:11 Aesthetically it's just a tiny bit off.

03:14 The more well known version has the "Bros" just above Mario's head where it fits much

03:19 nicer.

03:20 This copy had an incredible score for a very rare version of the cartridge, that's why

03:24 you could literally pay the roots to play your birthday party or rent a private plane

03:28 three times, for the same price this game went out for.

03:31 I looked up both those facts and I'm not lying.

03:38 Final Fantasy.

03:45 Price tag doesn't just come down to quality, it also comes down to rarity.

03:49 If two different games scored a 9.8, but one of them has 10 other copies of the game that

03:53 also scored a 9.8, while the other is the only 9.8 to exist, well then obviously the

03:57 single 9.8 is going to sell for significantly more.

04:01 For $204,000 a copy of Final Fantasy on the NES was sold that had a 9.8 Wota score.

04:08 There are no other copies of Final Fantasy that have sold with a higher score than this,

04:13 in fact there are no copies of Final Fantasy for auction at this point in time with a similar

04:17 score at all.

04:18 It's a very real possibility that this might be the last good condition copy of the beginning

04:24 of one of the most popular game series of all time.

04:27 Resident Evil.

04:35 Another of our infamous ridged longbox games sold for a whopping $264,000.

04:42 The game was Resident Evil, the classic that launched a beloved series, and this particular

04:47 sale set a record as the most expensive PlayStation game to ever be sold.

04:52 For a copy of Resident Evil in the ridged longbox to be in your possession means you

04:56 have one of the first production printings of this brilliant game.

05:00 It's so rare in fact that it's known there are less than 10 copies of it in the entire

05:05 world, and with a Wota score of 9.6, wow this is a rare piece.

05:13 Mike Tyson's Punch Out.

05:15 Let's cut to the chase, this game is brutal, but is it $312,000 brutal?

05:22 Apparently so.

05:23 The infamous NES title sold two high priced versions in the same year in 2021.

05:28 The first was with a Wota score of 9.6 unsealed, then came the big daddy 6 months later.

05:34 Completely sealed and with a Wota score of 9.8, this copy of Mike Tyson's Punch Out

05:39 sold for that brutal $312,000 price, and became the only copy of this game to achieve this

05:45 score.

05:46 It's so well preserved in fact that to the untrained eye it looks like it's just come

05:50 straight off the shelf.

05:53 Sonic the Hedgehog.

06:01 When people think Sega, they think Sonic.

06:04 When the Sega Genesis dropped, Sonic was not only one of the best games on the console,

06:09 but probably the most famous.

06:11 Surprisingly though, getting your hands on an original copy of Sonic the Hedgehog on

06:15 the Sega Genesis today is a pretty difficult task.

06:18 That's why for an arguably lower score than other games that sell at this amount, a copy

06:23 of Sonic the Hedgehog with a Wota score of 9.4 sold for an outrageous $420,000.

06:31 The game is completely sealed and in great nick, but $420,000?

06:37 You could buy an apartment with that money.

06:44 The Legend of Zelda.

06:50 Hold onto your hats kids, because we are taking a massive leap in price tag by doubling our

06:55 previous entry and heading straight to $870,000.

07:00 The Legend of Zelda on the NES is a historical gaming collectible, in any condition, in anyone's

07:06 hands.

07:07 This particular copy of The Legend of Zelda that almost sold for $1 million had only a

07:11 Wota score of 9.0.

07:14 This version, known as the No Rev A cartridge, was on sale for only 2 months when the game

07:20 first released.

07:21 Is there a big difference?

07:22 It had 5 screws in it instead of 3.

07:25 To the average person, that is no big deal, but to a collector, that means that this copy

07:29 of The Legend of Zelda is as close to the original version of the game as they will

07:33 probably ever get, and in the best condition they'll probably ever see.

07:39 Super Mario 64.

07:43 Super Mario 64 has a significant amount of cultural weight, and this is something that

07:48 does come into play when price is decided.

07:51 The game revolutionised platformers, and was the first 3D rendering of Mario that players

07:56 had ever seen.

07:57 This particular copy of Super Mario 64 on the Nintendo 64 is the highest Wota scored

08:02 version of the game known to exist.

08:05 Coming in at an incredible 9.8 and totally sealed, this 25 year old game that looks like

08:10 it just came off the production line, sold for a teeny tiny 1.56 million.

08:17 That is so much money.

08:24 Super Mario Bros.

08:29 Arguably the greatest video game of all time was Super Mario Bros. on the NES.

08:34 This game revolutionised the console and industry, and created the most famous video game character

08:40 to ever exist.

08:42 With a Wota score of, you guessed it, 9.8 and completely sealed, one copy of Super Mario

08:48 Bros. that is believed to be one of the first ever printed, sold at auction to an anonymous

08:52 seller for 2 million dollars.

08:56 For my Australian brothers and sisters, that's more than 3 million dollars.

09:00 For my beautiful Brits, that's 1.5 million pound.

09:03 For my Denmark homies, that's over 13 million Danish krones.
