00:12 A power outage hit major cities and provinces in western Visayas Tuesday, January 2.
00:19 Starting January 1, AMBO senior residents no longer have access to benefits from the
00:23 Makati City Government's programs.
00:25 South Korea's opposition leader is stabbed in the neck during a visit to Busan.
00:30 And residents say Israeli aircraft and tanks step up strikes in southern Gaza after it
00:35 announced it will pull back some troops.
00:39 A power outage hit major cities and provinces in western Visayas Tuesday, January 2.
00:45 The National Grid Corporation of the Philippines, or NGCP, says all the power plants in Panay
00:50 Island shut down at around 2.27 PM.
00:53 Soon after, the Negros-Panay grid went out.
00:57 The NGCP says it is working on stabilizing voltage and extending feedback power to Iloilo
01:02 and Panay.
01:03 It adds the Negros-Panay interconnection was restored after it tripped at 3.07 PM.
01:09 As of 4.30 PM, the Santa Barbara-Baldoza lines were restored too.
01:13 Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Trenas expresses his dismay over the power interruptions on Panay
01:18 Island.
01:20 The Energy Department says it is coordinating with the NGCP and all the affected plants
01:24 and distributors.
01:26 In 2023, business groups, officials, and electric power cooperatives made calls for sustainable
01:32 power supply in western Visayas.
01:35 They say long power interruptions put businesses and the health of consumers at risk.
01:41 Starting January 1, senior residents in the enlisted men's barrios, or EMBO, no longer
01:46 have access to benefits from the Makati City Government's programs.
01:50 This, after the Supreme Court ruled in 2022, the EMBO barangays are under Taguig City's
01:57 jurisdiction.
01:58 This means their blue cards are now voided, except for use as ballot ID and debit card.
02:03 In Makati, blue card holders are entitled to cash incentives and free movie screenings
02:07 in some malls in the city.
02:09 They also receive birthday cakes, grocery items, and maintenance medicine from the city
02:13 government.
02:15 While EMBO blue card holders will no longer enjoy these, they are now entitled to Taguig
02:19 City's cash gifts for senior citizens.
02:22 It's the same amount as the cash gifts given by Makati.
02:25 Taguig Mayor Lani Cayetano earlier said her city government couldn't give EMBO seniors
02:29 the birthday cakes they used to get from Makati, but they have their cash gifts, which they
02:33 could spend however they wish.
02:35 Taguig also opened its Center for the Elderly, which senior citizens access for free.
02:42 South Korea's opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung is stabbed in the neck
02:47 during a visit to Busan Tuesday, January 2.
02:50 Lee remained conscious and received emergency treatment.
02:54 He was airlifted to Seoul after a man attacked him while touring the site of a proposed airport.
02:59 A Busan police official says the assailant used an 18-centimeter knife purchased online.
03:04 He did not identify the suspect and said the motive was still being investigated.
03:09 The assailant is quickly subdued by party officials and police officers.
03:13 Lee narrowly lost in the 2022 presidential election.
03:16 He has led the main opposition party since August 2022.
03:22 Residents say Israeli aircraft and tanks have stepped up strikes in southern Gaza since
03:26 the new year, after it announced plans to pull back some troops.
03:30 Israel says the war in Gaza will go on for many months.
03:33 However, an Israeli official says Monday, January 1, the military will draw down forces
03:39 inside the enclave this month and shift to a months-long phase of more localized mopping-up
03:44 operations.
03:46 Residents of Sheikh Radwan District in Gaza City say tanks withdrew after what they described
03:50 as the most intense 10 days of warfare since the conflict began.
03:55 But tanks remain in other parts of northern Gaza and fighting in central parts of the
03:59 enclave continues unabated.
04:02 Residents also say tanks shelled parts of the Al-Bureji refugee camp in central Gaza.
04:07 The war has reduced much of Gaza to rubble, killing thousands and plunging its 2.3 million
04:12 people into a humanitarian disaster.
