00:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:19 This WTDC is our chance together to achieve consensus
00:25 on key issues we will deliberate so that we can bring
00:29 the 2.9 billion people worldwide into the digital world
00:34 they currently do not know.
00:35 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:58 Much progress has been made with almost 5 billion people
01:03 being online today.
01:05 We have seen the strongest growth in ICT,
01:10 uptake in the developing world, and that is very encouraging.
01:16 Yet, one third of humanity is still offline.
01:22 That is close to 3 billion people, mostly
01:26 people in developing countries, and in poor areas,
01:31 rural areas, areas where we need to attract investment.
01:38 Something that has been one of my priorities.
01:42 [MUSIC PLAYING]
01:48 If such inequalities are left unchecked,
01:53 development will accelerate more and more
01:57 in some parts of the world, while elsewhere it slows down.
02:06 The numbers speak for themselves.
02:11 One third of the world remains offline,
02:15 and the majority are women in developing countries.
02:21 The responsibility to shape the future of the digital economy
02:27 and ensure no one is left behind lies with us and all of us
02:35 working together.
02:39 No company, country, or institution
02:45 has the resources to do it alone.
