00:00 [MUSIC PLAYING]
00:26 Mr. President, as a nation, we are a startup.
00:30 We have a startup mindset.
00:33 What are some of the things that you have learned to prioritize,
00:38 especially that there are a lot of decisions to be made?
00:42 There are things that need to happen as soon as possible.
00:46 And in that, what do you think in that process
00:50 is an advice you could give to the youth
00:52 with an entrepreneurial mindset?
00:55 I think the question you asked combines a number of things.
00:58 One is about everybody's responsibility, including mine.
01:06 I think it is past time for me to aspire to be an entrepreneur.
01:19 [LAUGHTER]
01:22 I have-- but again, being an entrepreneur
01:30 is an issue of mindset.
01:34 I'm trying to find ways of being one, even at the wrong time,
01:39 but building on my other responsibility.
01:43 I'm now in politics.
01:44 [LAUGHTER]
01:47 So I have tried to make it a politics of entrepreneurship.
01:55 [LAUGHTER]
01:56 [APPLAUSE]
02:00 Meaning that for those ideas I may have,
02:09 I try to find ways of channeling those ideas through politics,
02:16 to reach the young people, many of whom
02:21 are here, doing different things.
02:26 And really use politics also to create that environment where
02:35 aspiring entrepreneurs can find that environment where
02:41 they are enabled to do a number of things.
02:44 So for the young people, the advice is, as we grow up,
02:55 we come to understand every year, understand better
03:06 the world we are in as we find it.
03:11 But there is also the world every person
03:15 would want it to be, starting with himself,
03:21 the people around them, and family, friends,
03:26 and the society as a whole.
03:27 So for young people, therefore, as you keep growing,
03:32 you keep expanding your understanding of the world,
03:38 but also trying to make a contribution
03:40 to the shaping of this world you are in.
03:43 There are choices you make, investments you make,
03:53 and there are things you expect as the outcomes.
03:59 So for me, it is just to tell everyone here,
04:01 the young people, that they have everything in themselves
04:07 and around themselves to tap into, to grow themselves,
04:14 and to grow the society they are part of.
04:18 In this case, many of them here are Rwandans,
04:21 and it's about Rwanda.
04:23 It's about Africa.
04:23 It's about-- and I'm sure we all learned many things from what
04:32 the young people who spoke before us had to tell us.
04:39 Devine, Christelle, and they are just
04:43 telling us that what we have been doing, what we are doing,
04:47 you can do.
04:50 You don't have to do what they are doing,
04:54 but you can do different things with the same kind of mindset
05:01 and spirit with which they are doing.
05:04 So that is the advice I can give to young people.
05:09 And again, it's not just about one individual.
05:15 It's also that individual and others, and the country,
05:21 and the wider society.
05:23 And there is searching that we can all
05:28 contribute to, or gain from, or do
05:31 that will make a difference in solving
05:36 one problem or the other.
05:37 But around that, benefiting from it.
05:40 I mean, Christelle was telling us about water, providing water.
05:46 Water is all over the place, but people don't access it.
05:51 Or there is where water seemingly is lacking,
05:54 but ideas can actually show people where water is,
06:01 what everyone needs, and to make it available so that more
06:05 people access it than before.
06:08 And around that, create these businesses.
06:12 We heard they were talking about, and many others.
06:15 I'm sure many others in the room, we might hear from them.
06:20 So let the young people really feel
06:25 they have in them and around them many things to tap into.
06:32 That's why I was saying earlier, I was telling somebody,
06:37 said when you actually were asking people questions,
06:42 and this, I was seeing people, you know,
06:47 said put up your hand if you have a question,
06:50 and somebody was--
06:53 another one, another one.
06:54 So I want them to say, yeah, I have something.
06:59 Just raise your hand.
07:00 Put it high up there so that you are seen, and don't hesitate.
07:04 Don't do like this.
07:06 [LAUGHTER]
07:08 So the young people must learn to just show up and try
07:13 their luck, and many of them have had education.
07:20 That's what the country does.
07:21 That's what we are doing.
07:23 We try to make sure that this education is
07:26 available to as many of our young people as possible.
07:29 That's what every country is doing.
07:32 So once you have done that, build on that,
07:37 and the sky is no longer the limit.
07:41 Thank you.
07:42 Thank you.
07:42 [APPLAUSE]
07:46 We've talked a lot about entrepreneurship,
07:49 the different mindset, redefining the story,
07:52 changing our, you know, redefinition,
07:55 or just imagining new things based on what we already have,
07:59 and of course, plugging it into our roots, what is home,
08:04 and what works for our people as an African nation.
08:08 My question to you is, what is your biggest dream
08:11 or achievement that you're really
08:13 looking forward to in the next coming years?
08:16 Wow.
08:16 [LAUGHTER]
08:18 [APPLAUSE]
08:23 It's not just one.
08:25 [LAUGHTER]
08:29 But I can bring all of them together.
08:33 It's just continuing to see Rwanda, Africa stabilize,
08:43 grow, achieve prosperity for our people,
08:50 and be where we should be that others have taken for granted.
09:00 Some people are up there, and they've
09:04 taken that for granted for us.
09:06 We are trying to figure out how to get there.
09:10 I want us to get there.
09:12 [APPLAUSE]
09:19 Get there via our own efforts and resources,
09:26 our people, because we have all of that.
09:29 So I'm sure the young people here,
09:35 and the generation coming after them, and others,
09:41 should, I think, be looking at things like that.
09:45 So that is my dream.
09:51 [APPLAUSE]
09:56 I've-- it's almost unfair to answer that question
10:01 after the president.
10:02 [LAUGHTER]
10:06 I always paraphrase a statement made by Moses, the prophet
10:12 Moses.
10:14 So this guy runs up to him outside and says to him,
10:20 Moses, Moses, there are some people that
10:24 are prophesying in the camp.
10:26 Please stop them.
10:28 And he said, oh, no, no, don't stop them.
10:31 Oh, how I wish all God's people were prophets.
10:35 So I paraphrase it.
10:37 My dream is I wish all young Africans were entrepreneurs.
10:42 Come on, guys.
10:43 [APPLAUSE]
10:47 My dream is to come back here, and there is 5,000 crystals,
10:52 young men and women creating jobs.
10:58 The policies are in place.
11:01 The leadership is in place.
11:02 The support is in place.
11:04 Why not?
11:05 We can do it.
11:07 I think that should be yours.
11:08 The Nike was just do it.
11:11 Now yours becomes we can do it.
11:13 Yeah.
11:14 [LAUGHTER]
11:15 [APPLAUSE]
11:17 Mr. President, Mr. Maisewa, it has
11:20 been an honor to be able to moderate this panel with you
11:24 two.
11:24 I've learned a lot, and I'm pretty sure everyone
11:27 in this room as well is appreciative for your time
11:30 and knowledge.
11:31 And I really want to thank you for being here with us today.
11:33 Thank you.
11:34 [APPLAUSE]
11:34 Thank you.
11:35 Thank you.
