00:00 Chairman of Mara Corporation Jagdish Thakkar, Ashish Thakkar, CEO of Marathon Group,
00:14 Country Manager Severa and the staff of Marathon Rwanda, senior officials here present,
00:26 distinguished ladies and gentlemen. I am pleased to join you here today to launch the Mara
00:37 phones factory which is the first of its kind in our continent.
00:48 The first smartphones ever to be made in Rwanda as Ashish said have already rolled off the assembly
01:00 line. The Mara phone joins the growing list of high quality products that are made in our country.
01:16 Producing smartphones is not a simple matter.
01:24 Around 1,000 individual components are involved as we have been taken through the whole process.
01:40 The Mara phones plant is therefore a complex manufacturing operation
01:49 requiring significant technical skills and expertise.
01:56 It is another milestone on our journey to high tech
02:06 made in Rwanda industry. I want to
02:11 congratulate everyone involved in this pioneering project.
02:20 In particular I thank Mara Chairman Jagdish and the CEO Ashish for
02:35 choosing to establish this plant in Rwanda, our country and their country.
02:44 This factory is the latest addition to our ongoing partnership with Mara Group
02:57 and shows this company's confidence in the business prospects of our country and the wider region.
03:07 The smartphone is no longer a luxury item. It is rapidly becoming a requirement of everyday life.
03:26 That trend is bound to increase in the years to come as more and more services migrate
03:37 to digital platforms. In Rwanda
03:47 we have Irembo which is already the citizens' primary gateway for many public services
04:02 and integration of Irembo into Mara phones is an innovative feature.
04:14 Around 15, let me say the percentage really is still very low, of Rwandans
04:24 are already using smartphones. But we want to enable many more
04:38 who would like to and this is why dealing with the cost and quality
04:47 is very important. So we are gradually dealing with those obstacles through what Mara
05:02 Group has established here in Rwanda. The introduction of Mara phones will put smartphone
05:11 ownership within reach of more Rwandans. The product is backed by a warranty
05:26 and the price can be paid in installments over two years. I think they have tried to
05:35 make it as simple and possible to Rwandans as they could.
05:46 Our world is changing very fast.
05:55 Keeping pace requires constant innovation. This is the path Rwanda has chosen
06:03 for our development. The investment by Mara phones group is therefore in perfect harmony
06:16 with our focus on science and technology as the key drivers of our economic transformation.
06:28 I am pleased that Mara is committed to partnering with Rwanda's educational and training institutions
06:41 to ensure that workers acquire the necessary skills to succeed.
06:50 Indeed, this should be the model of collaboration between industry and the education sector
07:02 in our country. Mara aims to export phones within our region as well and this is very important.
07:13 As such, this partnership has a significance that goes beyond the particular facility
07:26 we are launching today or the phone that it produces. After all, the private sector is the
07:34 engine of the progress we desire for our continent. We must aim to compete
07:45 regionally and globally at the high end of the technology spectrum.
07:56 The Mara group has shown that it shares our vision for Rwanda's development and is prepared
08:06 to play a part in it, a significant part for that matter.
08:17 We value that readiness and will work to ensure that your investment, Mara group's investment,
08:29 is commercially successful, which is also to our benefit.
08:40 Once again, let me thank you for your commitment and wish you every success
08:50 in these important endeavours. I am sure Rwandans have been listening to you, to all of us,
09:03 and will take advantage of this opportunity so that they take themselves to a much higher level
09:15 of transformation they are seeking to have.
09:24 So, have a good day and thank you for your kind attention.
