03:37 What kind of human beings will they be like? How different will they be from other adults
03:44 whose children will have gone through other schools?
03:47 To answer these questions, let us refer to what one of the highly renowned educationalists
03:51 once said, that "Education is that which remains when almost all you have learnt in
03:57 school is long forgotten." Indeed, whereas you may forget almost all the history and
04:03 chemistry you learnt in school, you cannot easily forget the humility, care and discipline
04:09 of the history or chemistry teachers if they were characterised by these fine attributes.
04:15 Whereas you may forget almost all the geography and physics you learnt at school, you may
04:20 not forget the strict but kind headmaster, you may not forget the disorganised and rough
04:25 biology teacher, and so on and so forth. The total summation of all this is what is
04:30 referred to as education, and you use more of this in your everyday life than what you
04:36 formally learnt at school.

04:48 Excella School Educational Mission
04:51 Excella School seeks to offer an all-round education in an exciting and conducive educational
04:57 atmosphere which promotes children's personal freedoms and confidence to explore and experiment,
05:04 hence nurturing and developing their diverse talents with which they are endowed.
05:09 At Excella School, both child social and academic development are considered to be equally important
05:15 and complementary, hence our school motto, "In pursuit of balanced education."

05:57 Teaching Learning Methodologies
06:00 In keeping with Excella School Educational Vision and Mission articulated above, the
06:05 teaching learning methodologies are child-centred in that they seek to equip the children with
06:10 all-round, hands-on experiences, hence sustainable educational skills.
06:16 The methodologies are pupil-centred in nature and are characterised by the following.
06:22 Recognition that Children Do Not Come to School Empty
06:26 A child does not come to school empty, on the contrary, he or she comes with different
06:31 sorts of knowledge, some of which the child is naturally endowed with, others which is
06:37 experiential, from parents or older siblings, relatives, neighbours, etc., with whom the
06:43 child interacts.
06:45 Excella School recognises that our teachers should begin with this knowledge with which
06:50 the children come to school, then build onto it. This is known as "from the known to
06:56 the unknown" teaching learning approach.
07:00 Let us share with you an example.
07:03 Instead of giving the definition of balanced diet in giving pupils lots of notes, the teacher
07:08 gives the pupils a group work activity which allows the pupils to identify why they don't
07:14 eat the same food at home every day and what would happen to them and their family if they
07:20 ate the same type of food every day. By approaching the lesson like this, the teacher will have
07:26 tapped the knowledge of the children which will facilitate him or her to teach them the
07:31 concept of a balanced diet.
07:34 Interactive Teaching Learning Atmosphere
07:38 All the children at Excella School sit in groups. The sitting arrangement speaks volumes
07:43 about the teaching learning process at our school. It is highly interactive. We recognise
07:48 that children have ideas and experiences to share and also need to own the teaching learning
07:53 process, indeed reiterating the fact that children do not come to school empty.
08:00 A child who interacts with both the school physical and human environment through planned
08:04 school activities will no doubt grow into a creative, critical-minded and intelligent
08:10 adult. This view is supported by the educational wisdom embodied in the saying that "When
08:17 I hear, I forget. When I see, I remember. But when I do, I understand."
08:24 The appropriate teaching learning approach highlighted by the above educational wisdom
08:29 is the one which offers children practical, hands-on experiences. This approach departs
08:36 from the traditional mindset of treating the teacher as a repository of knowledge and the
08:41 children as empty vessels which must be filled quite quickly.
08:46 Use of Modern Technology
08:49 Currently, we employ the following modern technology techniques to facilitate the teaching
08:55 learning process.
08:57 Computer Projector
08:59 We access educational materials from different parts of the world and project them onto a
09:04 giant screen. This means that we are able to access some of the best ideas from some
09:09 of the best teachers and educationalists far away from Rwanda.
09:14 Television Sets
09:16 Some classrooms are equipped with TV sets connected to star media featuring a number
09:21 of educational programs, the best being Smile of the Child.
09:25 One Laptop per Child Computers
09:28 Our children in primary school have access to this computer educational program which
09:33 helps them with a wide range of IT skills.

09:57 Educational Delivery Assessment and Evaluation Methodologies
10:02 Once laid down the educational vision and mission for Accela and the teaching learning
10:07 methodologies to be employed in order to realise the noble goals, it is imperative that valid
10:13 and accurate assessment and evaluation methodologies are also laid down to measure progress towards
10:19 the achievement of the goals.
10:21 The Holistic Approach
10:23 Unless used carefully, assessment of progress can adversely affect children because invariably
10:29 they are the ones tested. Instead of assessing the quality of the teaching learning process,
10:35 at Accela School we break free from the tradition of focusing on the grades achieved by children
10:40 as the only yardstick of measuring progress towards achieving the set educational vision
10:46 and mission. Instead we employ a holistic approach by assessing quality of the educational
10:52 delivery in the different areas which constitute the educational delivery.
