00:00 A jury in Colorado found two paramedics guilty of criminally negligent homicide on Friday
00:08 over the death of 23-year-old Elijah McClain, a young black man who died in 2019 after police
00:15 roughly detained him and the medics injected him with a powerful sedative.
00:21 McClain's mother wept outside the courthouse after the verdict.
00:26 In addition to the homicide charges, the jury found one of the medics guilty of assault
00:30 in the second degree for the administration of the sedative.
00:34 McClain was walking home from the convenience store on August 24, 2019, when police confronted
00:40 him and put him in a chokehold at least twice.
00:43 He was not suspected of any crimes.
00:46 The paramedics injected McClain with 500mg of sedative ketamine, wrongly judging his
00:51 weight to be 200lbs when he actually weighed 143lbs.
00:56 In the third and final trial over McClain's death, prosecutors argued throughout the trial
01:00 that the paramedics violated their training protocols by failing to examine McClain before
01:06 injecting him with the maximum allowed dose of the drug.
01:09 The defense said the paramedics acted appropriately based on the training available in 2019.
01:15 Two police officers were acquitted in the previous trials, while one was found guilty
01:20 of criminally negligent homicide.
