00:00 I am the city, alright?
00:02 The savior Don.
00:04 Fairy lives don't matter today.
00:06 Welcome to WatchMojo
00:08 and today we're counting down our picks for the scripted Netflix shows and movies we were most excited to see
00:13 until they actually aired.
00:15 I mean, these people are horrible.
00:17 But I like money, so...
00:19 Number 10. The Gray Man
00:23 They didn't tell you who I am, did they?
00:25 They never do.
00:27 I'm Sierra Four.
00:29 I sent you out to kill one of your own.
00:31 Centered around an ex-FBI agent on the lam,
00:33 on paper, The Gray Man seemed like it was going to break records.
00:37 It had popular performers like Ryan Gosling and Chris Evans,
00:40 and big-name directors behind the camera.
00:42 Hey, sunshine. Lloyd Hanson here.
00:45 I'm the one running this op.
00:46 What op?
00:47 The one where I get exactly what I want.
00:49 I'm a little unclear as to what that is.
00:51 Netflix even poured a ton of money into both the film and advertising budgets,
00:55 proving how much faith they had in it.
00:57 While it did get tens of millions of views in the first day,
01:00 some didn't find it as remarkable as the trailers had made it seem.
01:03 For a project with this much star power and money behind it,
01:06 there was no room for error.
01:07 Despite making a big splash at first,
01:09 it has unfortunately faded into the background
01:11 amongst their more popular releases.
01:13 Boring.
01:15 You do see that?
01:17 Number 9. Marco Polo
01:19 I'm giving you freedom.
01:21 But the walls of my kingdom stretch beyond the horizon.
01:26 Do you understand?
01:28 This series follows the famous explorer in his youth.
01:31 It was originally supposed to be aired on cable,
01:33 but ended up being picked up by the streaming service instead
01:35 for nearly $100 million.
01:37 The higher fees for more traffic, more customers.
01:41 More money.
01:42 That price was practically unheard of for television
01:45 and was enough to pique people's interest.
01:47 However, that quickly ebbed once it started airing.
01:50 While the casting was solid, many found the concept to be unimaginative.
01:53 They already asked, but only if that battle was closer to home.
01:59 First impressions are everything,
02:01 and the lackluster pilot was enough to turn people away.
02:03 While the second season was met with a better response,
02:06 the company decided against renewing it for a third
02:08 and pulled the plug,
02:09 but not before suffering a huge loss in profit.
02:11 I will obliterate your wall.
02:13 I will take your fraudulent crown.
02:16 I will spike your corpse to the gates of my new palace.
02:20 Number 8. The Cloverfield Paradox.
02:23 The success of 2016's 10 Cloverfield Lane
02:26 left fans excited for more of the franchise.
02:28 However, when Paramount watched the movie,
02:30 they weren't impressed,
02:31 and sold it off to Netflix in January 2018.
02:34 Please, don't break up on me, baby.
02:37 As such, it didn't have a traditional marketing campaign.
02:40 Rather than gradually building up anticipation,
02:43 Netflix went big.
02:44 A surprise trailer dropped at Super Bowl 52 on February 4th, 2018,
02:48 and the film premiered on Netflix just hours later.
02:51 We trusted you for two years.
02:55 It was a bold move,
02:56 but it wasn't enough to make the film a hit.
02:58 It was viewed by fans as a disservice to the previous movies,
03:01 with the plot and special effects specifically being called out.
03:04 It was a shame,
03:05 given that it would have helped keep a beloved franchise alive.
03:08 Number 7. Hoops.
03:16 I'm not your friend.
03:17 You're a crazy-ass teacher with zero boundaries.
03:20 Netflix had seen previous success with the Doll animation,
03:23 so it's easy to see why they thought Hoops would be a hit as well.
03:26 It focuses on a school's struggling basketball team and their chaotic coach.
03:29 While the cast was talented,
03:31 with new girl actor Jake Johnson at the helm,
03:33 it wasn't enough to make it a success.
03:35 You guys are such idiots.
03:37 There's no way this kid is mine.
03:39 Are you serious?
03:40 He's exactly like you, Ben.
03:42 Viewers felt that the writing leaned too heavily on swearing and crude humor
03:45 rather than just making good jokes.
03:47 It's kind of cool, actually.
03:48 You're, like, more mature.
03:50 Oh, more mature.
03:52 The fact that the plot was thin at best also didn't help.
03:55 While it had potential,
03:56 it unfortunately couldn't live up to the success of its predecessors.
03:59 It was cancelled after just 10 episodes.
04:01 I feel like you're judging me.
04:03 I am.
04:04 Oh, so I was right to feel that way.
04:05 100%.
04:06 Number 6. Emily in Paris.
04:09 You don't speak French.
04:11 Fake it till you make it.
04:13 During the pandemic, people were craving a form of escapism
04:16 while being stuck at home.
04:17 Emily in Paris seemed like the perfect solution.
04:19 A show about a young woman finding herself while in France
04:22 was a great setup for a coming-of-age narrative.
04:24 Unfortunately, the audience realized soon after starting
04:27 that this show wasn't going to cure them of their wanderlust.
04:30 Because this city is filled with love and romance
04:35 and light and beauty and passion and sex,
04:39 which are clearly things that mean nothing to you.
04:41 There were several things that threw people off,
04:43 from the portrayal of French culture
04:45 to Emily being extremely out of touch.
04:47 The audience found her unrealistic and unrelatable.
04:49 What could have been the next great sitcom
04:51 ultimately ended up as mostly just a guilty pleasure.
04:53 He's donating a dress to the AFL auction.
04:55 AFL?
04:57 American Friends of the Louvre.
04:58 Oh, God, the last thing the Louvre needs
05:01 is more friends from America.
05:02 Number 5. Bright.
05:04 You want bodies on the street?
05:06 Huh? All of LA on fire.
05:08 This is like a nuclear weapon that grants wishes.
05:11 It can be easy to let high hopes get the best of you,
05:14 and that was definitely the case when it came to Bright.
05:16 The studio had a lot of faith in the project,
05:18 to the point where they were willing to sink
05:20 $90 million into its production.
05:22 That is a magic wand, and you don't know how to use it.
05:26 You're gonna kill us all trying.
05:28 It had an interesting concept
05:30 and attempted to showcase both the buddy cop
05:32 and fantasy genres in a new light.
05:34 Unfortunately, things didn't pan out the way they had hoped.
05:37 The movie was met with immediate criticism,
05:39 from the poor world-building
05:40 to the failed attempts at commentary
05:42 on various social issues.
05:43 Shut up! This ain't no Uber, man.
05:46 Don't tell Nick to shut up. He's a person, too.
05:49 While executives had been considering turning Bright
05:51 into a franchise with its own universe,
05:53 the unexpected negative reaction
05:54 quickly put an end to that idea.
05:56 Number 4. Space Force.
05:59 Good luck with your retirement, Kick.
06:00 And I say that facetiously,
06:02 because you are a crook and a womanizer,
06:04 and I hate your guts.
06:06 God, that felt good.
06:07 A satirical take on a real branch of the military
06:09 with the same name,
06:10 this comedy stars Steve Carell as General Mark Naird.
06:13 The program was met with a mixed response.
06:15 While some responded well to the satire,
06:17 others felt that it was too heavy-handed.
06:19 As time went on,
06:20 the show seemed to be recycling the same joke
06:22 throughout the episodes.
06:23 While Carell and John Malkovich
06:24 received praise for their work,
06:26 everything else ultimately fell flat.
06:28 Don't put too much pressure on the act itself.
06:31 A-a-arousal is birthed in the brain.
06:34 I can't tell you how creepy it is
06:36 to watch you say the word "arousal."
06:38 People felt that it relied too heavily
06:40 on the topical moment that inspired it
06:42 rather than the characters or plot.
06:44 Dr. Mallory is in the process
06:46 of doing these calculations by hand,
06:49 so this whole thing may come down to the wire.
06:52 - Done. - Oh, good. You got it. Great.
06:54 Number 3. Disjointed.
06:56 But I am strongly considering pressing the salt charges.
06:59 - Really? - Yeah.
07:00 You want everyone to know
07:01 that a martial arts instructor
07:03 got his ass beat by a stoned old Jewish lady?
07:06 This one had everything it should have needed to succeed--
07:09 a unique premise, a live audience,
07:11 and, of course, Kathy Bates.
07:13 The sitcom centers around the owner of a dispensary
07:15 finding success after marijuana is legalized.
07:17 It utilized various artistic mediums,
07:19 from standard live action
07:21 to animated scenes depicting a character's trips.
07:23 It even had a built-in demographic
07:25 of stoners eager to watch.
07:27 Seven.
07:29 Out of ten?
07:31 I don't know. I just know it's really good.
07:33 Unfortunately, while the idea was fantastic,
07:36 the execution fell short.
07:38 Viewers found the jokes to be predictable
07:40 and not as smart as they could have been,
07:42 and Disjointed was discontinued after only one season.
07:44 One of the most exciting things about working in the cannabis space
07:47 is the opportunity it affords female entrepreneurs,
07:50 which brings me to today's strain--
07:53 Yves Bush.
07:54 Number 2. Red Notice.
07:56 Here's the thing, though. You're putting me in a bit of a pickle with this,
07:58 because without proper identification, how do I know who you are?
08:00 And for all I know, you could be the bad guy,
08:02 and I could be the other bad guy.
08:04 While having huge stars in your film
08:06 is a great way to reel viewers in,
08:08 it doesn't mean it will keep them fully engaged.
08:10 Red Notice stars established actors like Brian Reynolds
08:13 and Dwayne Johnson working together to pull off a heist.
08:15 The studio was so certain of its success
08:18 that it sank hundreds of millions into the budget.
08:20 The response was incredibly divisive.
08:22 While fans loved seeing the two titans on screen together,
08:25 critics felt the opposite.
08:27 Wolves have terrible eyesight.
08:29 I'm not a wolf. I'm a man of motion.
08:31 You're thinking of Jurassic Park.
08:33 No! I saw a nature documentary starring David Attenborough.
08:36 But you're thinking of Richard Attenborough from Jurassic Park.
08:39 To them, the movie was more of an opportunity
08:42 for the company to flex its wallet
08:44 and its ability to cast A-listers rather than a quality story.
08:47 You lost, and I won.
08:49 We. We won.
08:51 Together. Friendship. Teamwork.
08:53 It's called the moral of the story.

09:09 Number 1 - Iron Fist
09:12 And who the hell are you?
09:14 Maybe you want to test me and find out.
09:16 When it comes to a franchise as expansive as Marvel,
09:19 the standards are high.
09:21 The studio's become known for their intertwined stories and universes.
09:24 Netflix has also had a great streak of interconnected shows,
09:27 such as Jessica Jones and Daredevil.
09:29 However, they couldn't seem to catch that same spark with Iron Fist.
09:33 You have an extraordinary opportunity here.
09:35 Don't foul it up.
09:37 There was a lot of excitement among Marvel fans
09:40 around the hero getting his own series.
09:42 That is, until it actually came out.
09:44 Many found that it lacked intensity and entertainment value
09:47 and that it simply couldn't measure up to the other Marvel shows.
09:50 In the end, it felt like a genuinely interesting character had been wasted.
09:55 I don't even know what I'm meant to be.
09:57 How are you gonna help?
10:00 Which Netflix release do you feel didn't live up to its hype?
