00:00 Willy Wonka is a character that has lived in the hearts and minds of children for generations.
00:05 This Christmas, Warner Bros. hopes to keep that legacy going by revealing how the famous
00:09 chocolatier got his start.
00:11 Here's what you need to know before heading to the theaters.
00:14 Wonka has been in the Chocolate River pipeline for quite some time, with Trades First announcing
00:19 the project back in 2016.
00:21 It was eventually announced that the movie would hit theaters on March 17, 2023, but
00:26 in 2022, Warner Bros. decided to push back a whole bunch of projects.
00:30 According to Deadline, this was because they planned on releasing a ton of VFX-heavy films
00:35 and needed more time to get everything perfect.
00:37 As a result, Wonka was kicked back to Christmastime, with a new release date of December 15, 2023.
00:43 From what we've heard about the movie, Wonka definitely makes more sense as a joyous holiday
00:48 season family flick, so we're thinking the December date will be especially sweet for
00:52 everyone involved with the film.
00:54 Because Wonka is based on a children's book and hails from the director behind the first
00:58 two Paddington movies, don't expect an R-rated film.
01:01 The 1971 classic earned a G, and the Tim Burton remake got a PG.
01:07 Wonka will follow in that tradition, with a PG for some violence, mild language, and
01:12 somatic elements.
01:13 We're assuming the violence will be very cartoonish, perhaps even candy-related, so feel safe expecting
01:18 a wholesome tale for all ages.
01:20 "You're gonna get more than a bonk on the head."
01:22 "I don't have a bonk on the head."
01:24 "What is with me today?"
01:26 Where Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory introduces us to a candy man who spent years
01:30 locked away inside his factory, developing the most interesting confectionary treats
01:34 imaginable, Wonka will take a step back and look at the young inventor's rise to fame.
01:39 According to the plot synopsis, the movie introduces Willy Wonka and the crazy ideas
01:43 that he has about candy and changing the world.
01:46 Wonka believes everything is possible if you begin with a dream.
01:49 Of course, starting his chocolate shop comes with challenges, like dealing with a vicious
01:53 chocolate cartel or meddlesome police officers looking to spoil his fun.
01:57 However, with a few impressive song numbers and the help of some lovable friends, Wonka
02:02 plans to charm everyone in his way.
02:04 In the early stages of Wonka, Donald Glover, Ryan Gosling, Tom Holland, and Ezra Miller
02:10 were all considered to play the eccentric chocolatier.
02:13 However, it was eventually decided that Timothee Chalamet was the right actor to don Willy
02:17 Wonka's iconic top hat.
02:19 Speaking about his character at 2023's CinemaCon, Chalamet promised a new take on the classic
02:24 character.
02:25 While the actor believes that Gene Wilder and Joddy Depp portrayed Wonka with a bit
02:29 more cynicism, Chalamet says his candy maker is a Willy that's full of joy and hope, and
02:34 desire to become the greatest chocolatier.
02:36 "What are you doing?"
02:37 "I'm making chocolate, of course.
02:39 How do you like it?"
02:40 "I don't know.
02:42 I've never had any."
02:43 "You've never had chocolate?!"
02:45 So who will be starring alongside Chalamet?
02:47 Cardi Hawkins is playing Willy Wonka's mother.
02:50 This will mark Hawkins' third collaboration with Wonka director Paul King.
02:53 As she previously starred in both of his Paddington movies, Paterson Joseph will reportedly be
02:58 playing Arthur Slugworth, a rival chocolatier.
03:01 And you've no doubt seen Joseph before in projects such as The Leftovers, Aeon Flux,
03:06 and Law & Order UK.
03:08 We also know that Olivia Colman of The Favourite is set to star, and we can also expect to
03:12 see Mr. Bean himself, Rowan Atkinson.
03:15 Perhaps most interestingly, rom-com legend Hugh Grant will be playing an Oompa Loompa.
03:20 Famed comedian Keegan-Michael Key will also appear, as will Jim Carter of Downton Abbey,
03:25 and Matt Lucas of The Great British Bake Off.
03:28 Audiences will also get to see Carla Lane of The Day Shall Come as Wonka's young friend,
03:32 Noodle.
03:33 In the unbearable weight of massive talent, Nicolas Cage and Pedro Pascal both come to
03:38 the consensus that Paddington 2 is the greatest movie of all time.
03:42 After all, the film famously has a near-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score, marred only by negative
03:47 reviews from two rogue critics.
03:49 There have been entire video essays dedicated to the movie's charm, whimsy, and heart.
03:54 So whoever directed this film sounds like he would be the perfect pick to helm a movie
03:58 about a free-spirited candy maker.
04:00 And that's exactly who's directing the upcoming Willy Wonka prequel.
04:04 We're talking about Paul King, the man who made us all crave marmalade sandwiches with
04:08 the two Paddington films. In addition to introducing us to the world's most delightful bear, King
04:12 has also worked on some truly unique British comedies, including Garth Marenghi's Dark
04:17 Place and The Mighty Boosh.
04:19 So the man also knows how to make things really weird and really British.
04:23 Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Wonka star Keegan-Michael Key praised King's take
04:28 on the material, saying,
04:29 "Paul King is a delightful human being who has this wonderful childlike heart.
04:34 He was the perfect person to direct the project."
04:36 King is also co-writing the picture, along with Simon Farnaby.
04:40 The two previously collaborated on Paddington 2, so these filmmakers work together extremely
04:45 well.
04:46 Farnaby has also penned scripts for comedies Mindhorn and The Phantom of the Open.
04:51 The original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory boasts several remarkable songs, including
04:56 Pure Imagination, a number performed by Gene Wilder that's widely considered one of the
05:00 all-time best movie tunes.
05:02 Even Charlie and the Chocolate Factory had its fair share of musical moments, with the
05:06 Oompa Loompas carrying on the tradition of singing whenever a child is punished for their
05:10 bad behavior.
05:11 But will the upcoming Wonka have any songs of its own?
05:14 As it turns out, there's gonna be a ton of them.
05:17 Speaking with British Vogue, Timothee Chalamet revealed he's got a whopping seven numbers.
05:21 Keegan-Michael Key confirmed that with The Hollywood Reporter and added he's participating
05:25 in two songs himself.
05:27 As to who's penning these tunes, that's none other than Neil Hannan, leader of the band's
05:31 The Divine Comedy.
05:33 Speaking to The Times, Hannan praised Chalamet's vocal abilities, saying,
05:36 "He's just a lovely boy, young and gangly.
05:39 And he's got a very nice singing tone, which is all I cared about."
05:43 If you want a taste of what the Wonka prequel has to offer, perhaps it's time to check out
05:47 the previous films set at the fantastical Chocolate Factory.
05:50 Of course, when it comes to cinematic takes on Roald Dahl novels, they don't get any more
05:54 classic than 1971's Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
05:58 This includes Gene Wilder giving perhaps the most charming, creepiest, and loveliest performance
06:02 of his career as the titular Candyman.
06:05 "Well, well, well.
06:06 Two naughty, nasty little children gone.
06:10 Three good, sweet little children left."
06:14 If you want a slightly more modern adaptation, then prepare to visit the wild world of Tim
06:18 Burton.
06:19 The kooky auteur stamped his unique visual style on the tale of Willy Wonka and Charlie
06:23 Bucket with Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, which features Johnny Depp putting his own
06:27 spin on the top-hat-wearing chocolatier.
06:31 As a prequel to one of the most beloved movie musicals of all time, Wonka will have its
06:35 work cut out for it in the music department.
06:37 Many of the original songs in Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory remain iconic half
06:42 a century after its release.
06:44 Back in May of 2023, Film Music Reporter had an early scoop that the score of the new film
06:48 was being provided by Joby Talbot.
06:50 He had previously composed scores for such films as 2016's Sing and 2005's The Hitchhiker's
06:56 Guide to the Galaxy.
06:58 Interestingly, Talbot is also a member of the band The Divine Comedy, fronted by Neil
07:02 Hannan, who is providing Wonka with its original songs.
07:06 Unless the studio decides to add a bunch of out-of-place Top 40 hits to the movie, those
07:10 songs and Talbot's score appear to be what we can expect on the Wonka soundtrack.
07:14 This will keep it in line with the classical musical sensibility of the original film.
07:19 Wonka is not without its controversies, starting with Hugh Grant as an Oompa Loompa, one of
07:24 the lovable tiny humanoids whom Willy Wonka claims he took in as refugees but has been
07:28 accused of exploiting for cheap labor and macabre rhymes.
07:32 George Coppern is a British actor with dwarfism who told the BBC he would have preferred to
07:36 see a member of that community play that part instead.
07:39 He said,
07:40 "A lot of actors with dwarfism feel like we are being pushed out of the industry we love.
07:44 A lot of people, myself included, argue that dwarves should be offered everyday roles in
07:49 dramas and soaps, but we aren't getting offered those roles.
07:52 One door is being closed, but they have forgotten to open the next one."
07:55 Coppern is referring to new sensitivities in Hollywood, whereby filmmakers may be reluctant
08:00 to cast actors with dwarfism in roles like Oompa Loompas or Snow White's Seven Dwarfs.
08:05 However, they remain equally reluctant to cast them in standard acting roles that have
08:09 nothing to do with their physical size.
08:11 It's a thorny issue, and not one that's likely to be resolved anytime soon, but you can expect
08:16 some conversation and discussion around it to continue as Wonka gets closer to its theatrical
08:22 release.
08:23 Costuming
08:24 Costuming is an important part of many feature films, but for a fantasy musical like Wonka,
08:28 you can bet that the costumes are going to serve an especially important role in the
08:32 overall storytelling.
08:34 Fortunately, Wonka has veteran Lindy Hemming on board to design the film's costumes.
08:38 She's served the same role on plenty of memorable films, including Paddington and Paddington
08:43 2.
08:44 Hemming has designed costumes for superhero movies like Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight
08:47 trilogy and Wonder Woman films.
08:49 She's also lent her talents to several 007 movies, starting with Goldeneye through Casino
08:54 Royale.
08:55 And if you know anything about the Wonka-sourced material, you know that costuming, starting
08:59 with Willy Wonka, can get pretty wild and unusual, so this project should serve as a
09:04 pretty great showcase for her talents.
09:06 Show Warner Bros.
09:07 No one will know whether Wonka is a genuine hit until it comes to theaters, but a Deadline
09:11 report has figures that show Warner Bros. has reason to be optimistic about its prospects.
09:15 Advanced box office tracking data from The Quorum shows Wonka on track to pull in between
09:20 $20 million and $23 million in its opening weekend.
09:24 Unlike other box office tracking firms that release projections three weeks before a movie's
09:28 release, The Quorum specializes in numbers six weeks in advance, and Wonka has plenty
09:32 going for it heading into its holiday season opening.
09:35 Wonka opens on December 15, which means that it will likely do good business in the weeks
09:39 that follow.
09:40 The Christmas season tends to be popular among moviegoing audiences celebrating the holidays.
09:44 Could Wonka have the kind of broad family appeal that allows it to outperform early
09:48 predictions?
09:49 Time will tell, but things could go either way at this point.
09:52 "Ladies and gentlemen of the Gallery Gourmet, my name is Willy Wonka."
09:57 Welcome.
09:58 (upbeat music)
10:01 you
