00:00 As the end of 2023 approaches, we're already looking forward to next year, because BAFTA
00:04 Games have released their long list for the 2024 awards and they're giving us a pretty
00:09 good idea of who the biggest contenders are going to be.
00:11 Starting it off is the epic role-playing D&D game Baldur's Gate 3, which is up for nominations
00:16 in 15 categories.
00:17 So this was our game of the year and it won top prize at the 2023 Games Awards for good
00:22 reason.
00:23 It's a fantastically detailed and complex achievement that really has to be played to
00:26 be believed.
00:27 It's also been a great year for RPGs.
00:30 Marvel's Spider-Man 2, Hogwarts Legacy, Final Fantasy and The Legend of Zelda are also sweeping
00:35 the board, as is the horror survival game Alan Wake 2 with 14 potential nods.
00:39 So these are the big guns.
00:41 Expect to see them duke it out for the major awards come April.
00:43 Have there been any snubs?
00:45 Well, yes.
00:47 Bethesda's space epic Starfield fell short with only three potential awards up for grabs.
00:52 And with the flop of their vampire shooter Redfall, that's been quite a bad year for
00:55 them.
00:56 Forza Motorsport, Xbox's sim racing game, only clocked in one nomination.
01:00 But on the flip side, Call of Duty Modern Warfare 3 is up for three nominations, which
01:05 is not bad considering how badly it was reviewed.
01:08 And spare a thought for Hi-Fi Rush, despite being one of the smallest Xbox titles to be
01:12 released this year, with literally no fanfare or warning, it's managed to net six.
01:16 As for surprises, it's been a good year for indie games, especially the watery ones.
01:20 The buzzy fishing/eldritch horror game Dredge is up for five categories, while Cocoon, which
01:26 was made by the same people behind last year's smash hit Stray, and also Dave the Diver,
01:30 scooped six each.
01:31 And of course, the awards darling No Man's Sky still gets a nomination for evolving game.
01:35 There are some strong games this year, but who's going to win?
01:38 Well, I guess we'll find out closer to the time.
01:41 So let's check back in on April 11th.
