00:00 Seriously, the Indian government needs to work with us to ensure that we're getting
00:05 to the bottom of this."
00:07 Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had spoken out on why he went public with his
00:11 allegations about the Indian government's involvement in the killing of a Canadian Sikh
00:16 citizen.
00:17 Mr. Trudeau told the Canadian press in an interview that it decided to put a chill on
00:23 India and add an extra level of deterrence to keep Canadians safe.
00:28 In September, Mr. Trudeau told the House of Commons that there was "credible evidence"
00:34 against Indian agents who were allegedly involved in the 18 June killing of Canadian Sikh citizen
00:39 Hardeep Singh Nijar, who was labelled a terrorist in India.
00:45 The Indian government denied the allegations as "absurd" and demanded sufficient evidence
00:50 from Ottawa amid calls to cooperate in the investigation.
00:54 Recently on December 12, Mr. Trudeau said, "We felt that all the quiet diplomacy and
01:00 all the measures that we put in and ensured that our security services put in to keep
01:06 people safe in the community needed a further level of deterrence, perhaps of saying publicly
01:12 and loudly that we know or we have credible reasons to believe that the Indian government
01:18 was behind this, and therefore put a chill on them continuing or considering doing anything
01:24 like this."
01:27 Mr. Trudeau said the Sikh community in Canada was worried about their safety and felt they
01:32 were vulnerable.
01:33 Earlier this month, the US Justice Department alleged the involvement of an unnamed Indian
01:39 government official in a plot to assassinate Sikh separatist leader Gurpadwan Singh Pannu,
01:44 a US citizen who lives in New York.
01:48 Unlike Canada, American prosecutors have spelled out the full details of murder for higher
01:52 charges in an unsealed indictment and charged Indian national Nikhil Gupta, 52, in the case.
02:01 India said it took the US input seriously and formed a high-level investigation committee
02:05 to look into the matter.
02:07 But he noted that US authorities started their investigation into the attempted murder earlier.
02:13 He also added that there are different stakes involved as their justice system has a different
02:18 process.
02:20 Mr. Trudeau also said that he raised the issue with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during
02:25 the G20 summit in New Delhi but that did not prove constructive.
02:30 He accused India of waging an information war.
