00:10 My life was just different.

00:11 - Jonathan Lipnicki, yeah, the kid from Jerry Maguire.

00:15 - You know bees and dogs can smell fear?

00:18 - Well, he's all grown up and nearly unrecognizable

00:22 in a rare new interview.

00:24 - It was amazing.

00:25 - The actor, who's now 33, sat down

00:27 with the Lawrence brothers for their Brotherly Love podcast.

00:31 You probably remember Jonathan as this kid

00:34 with glasses and spiky blonde hair.

00:37 - Hi, Jerry.

00:37 - Hi, Ray.

00:41 - But flash forward to 2023

00:44 and Jonathan's ditched the specs for a whole new look.

00:47 Just check out those long locks.

00:50 - I missed you so much, I grew my hair out like you.

00:53 - That's how we both, I was just saying,

00:54 we both got the long hair thing going on.

00:56 We're rebelling, I love it, man.

00:58 - Naturally, conversation turned

01:00 to Jonathan's breakout role in the 1996 sports dramedy.

01:04 He recalled his experience auditioning for Tom Cruise on set.

01:09 - They were like, how would you like to go fly

01:10 and meet Tom Cruise and read for him?

01:12 So I was excited to go on a plane, was what I remember.

01:16 And I was excited to meet Maverick because I love Tom Cruise.

01:19 - Yes, of course.

01:20 - So I was excited to go hang out with him.

01:22 - What was that like when you met Tom Cruise?

01:24 - Yeah, I couldn't stop smiling.

01:25 He has that big smile.

01:26 You know, he is the definition of movie star.

01:29 I mean, the guy has charisma like I've never felt in my life.

01:34 You can feel it in the room when he walks in.

01:36 And I have never worked with anyone like him since.

01:39 - I loved that guy, you know?

01:41 And he's been incredibly kind to me throughout my career.

01:44 And it was real.

01:47 I just really, I just really,

01:49 and to this day, I really care about him.

01:51 I don't see him that often.

01:52 I don't have him on speed dial or anything.

01:54 But when we've connected, I have so much love for that guy.

01:58 - What's your favorite thing about Tom?

01:59 What do you like most about him?

02:01 - That he's a nice, that he is one of the nicest people

02:06 I know.

02:07 - Jonathan explained how his role

02:08 in the Oscar winning film launched him

02:11 into instant stardom.

02:13 - I didn't know how people knew my name

02:15 when we went to the premiere.

02:16 They were saying my name and I was like,

02:17 how do these people know my name?

02:19 - How old are you, Jonathan?

02:20 - Six.

02:21 - You like this outfit that you're wearing tonight?

02:22 - Yeah.

02:23 - What do you like about it?

02:25 - I don't know.

02:28 I just bought it 'cause I liked it.

02:30 - So how do you feel you look right now?

02:32 - Great.

02:33 - And that was the first moment

02:35 that things were kind of different.

02:36 And then it was just a blur for the next five, six years.

02:41 - Jonathan even reveals a secret

02:43 behind one of his most memorable moments in the film.

02:46 - Jared, you know the human head weighs eight pounds?

02:49 - That was not in the script.

02:50 I was just kind of messing around

02:52 with one of the ADs and they had me in the walkie

02:56 say some random facts.

02:58 And then the next day those were in dialogue.

03:00 - You know that my next door neighbor had three rabbits?

03:04 - I can't compete with that.

03:08 - Nearly 30 years later,

03:10 Jonathan's still passionate about acting.

03:12 His most recent project, "Secrets at the Museum,"

03:15 a lifetime TV movie.

03:18 - You can count on me just like your father did.

03:20 - And with four projects lined up for 2024,

03:23 Jonathan says he's grateful he got his start as a kid.

03:27 - I had the best of both worlds.

03:28 You know, I got to go and be a normal kid

03:30 and also have a career and chase what I wanted to do.

03:33 - There's nothing I would take back.

03:35 - Awesome. - Same here.

03:36 - There's nothing I would take back at all.

03:38 You know, I love it. - You know what's crazy?

03:39 - And I found out what I want to do

03:40 for the rest of my life when I was five years old.
