00:00 I'm Lil Wilcox and I'm an ultra distance bikepacker from Alaska.
00:05 I crave adventure, seeing how far I can push myself and discovering new routes to explore.
00:12 It's July and I'm in the northwest state of Oregon, where I'm riding the Outback route for the first time.
00:19 My aim is to try and establish a new FKT.
00:26 So an FKT stands for fastest known time and that's generally an effort from point A to point B.
00:33 You have a continuous clock and you're trying to cover the distance as fast as possible.
00:38 It's 586 kilometers of very loose dirt roads.
00:46 It's probably the toughest gravel event that I can think of just because the roads are so rough.
00:53 You go past Fort Rock, go through the Crooked River, go through the Ochoco Mountains,
00:58 follow Trout Creek up through Antelope.
01:01 It is a trip, it's super interesting.
01:05 Just try to stay positive, be excited about it.
01:10 If you have to force yourself into it, do whatever you gotta do.
01:13 The anticipation of knowing you're going to be out there for almost 30 hours
01:18 gives you more adrenaline and it makes your senses even more alert than just riding a bike.
01:23 There's definitely a more direct way to get back to the Columbia River, but I wasn't on it.
01:28 I was on this massive roller coaster of dirt roads.
01:31 I knew I was going to have to dig deep on this FKT attempt.
01:36 And from this point on, I was going it alone.
