00:00 "Ready and challenge! Start your engines!"
00:04 Welcome to WatchMojo, and today we're looking over all that we know about the fifth entry
00:09 in the Mad Max film series, Furiosa. Beware, spoilers abound.
00:13 "Now pick up what you can and run."
00:15 From George Miller and his team.
00:19 By all accounts, Furiosa a Mad Max Saga is in good hands,
00:24 with it being directed and co-written by Mad Max franchise creator George Miller,
00:28 along with co-creator Byron Kennedy.
00:30 Miller began the post-apocalyptic series in 1979 with a then 21-year-old Mel Gibson
00:35 in the titular role.
00:37 "You and me are gonna talk about the toe cutter."
00:40 Three installments followed. Mad Max 2, The Road Warrior,
00:44 Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome, and Mad Max Fury Road.
00:48 The latter releasing some 30 plus years after its predecessor and sans Gibson.
00:56 Furiosa re-teamed Miller with his Fury Road crew, including editor Margaret Sixel,
01:02 production designer Colin Gibson, sound mixer Ben Osmo, and costume designer Jenny Bevan,
01:07 all of whom won Oscar awards for their work on the previous film.
01:10 "Oh what a day! What a lovely day!"
01:13 Additionally, Simon Duggan, who worked on 2016's Hacksaw Ridge,
01:18 serves as the film's cinematographer.
01:20 "Please Lord, help me get one more. Help me get one more."
01:26 It's a prequel. We're not gonna lie, the Mad Max timeline is a wee bit confusing.
01:32 "What's your name? What do I call you?"
01:36 Within the many movies and other IP-related output,
01:40 there have been plenty of contradictions and loose connections to say the least.
01:44 Essentially, each film takes place during a different juncture
01:47 in the story's post-apocalyptic world.

01:58 As for Furiosa a Mad Max Saga, it will act as a prequel to Mad Max Fury Road
02:04 and delve into the origins of that film's standout character, Imperator Furiosa.
02:09 Played by Charlize Theron in the previous installment,
02:11 Furiosa handled logistics for warlord Immortan Joe Citadel.
02:15 "Remember me?"
02:17 However, she rebels against him to rescue the five wives.
02:21 "You wanna get through this? Do as I say."
02:27 The character was praised by critics and audiences alike.
02:30 This was in part due to her being a fierce female action heroine
02:34 who can mix it up just as well or even better than the men in the series.
02:44 The Story
02:46 As mentioned, Furiosa a Mad Max Saga stands as a prequel to Mad Max Fury Road
02:51 and centers on protagonist Furiosa.
02:53 "Promise me you'll find your way home."
02:55 The official synopsis from Warner Bros. reads in part,
03:00 "As the world fell, young Furiosa is snatched from the green place of many mothers
03:05 and falls into the hands of a great biker horde led by the warlord Dementus."
03:10 It also states that they will come across the citadel presided over by
03:13 Extreme baddie the Immortan Joe.
03:15 It's then that the two warlords, Dementus and Joe, go to war,
03:19 leaving Furiosa to quote, "put together the means to find her way home."
03:24 The film is also heavily expected to answer questions around how the character lost her arm
03:29 and gained the prosthetic that's featured in Fury Road.
03:32 Plus, if the trailer is any indication,
03:34 this installment will feature its fair share of rip-roaring action extravagance.
03:39 "I'm Furiosa!"
03:40 "The darkest of angels."
03:43 "I'm Furiosa!"
03:47 The cast
03:48 Furiosa boasts an impressive cast of acclaimed actors, many well-versed in the action genre.
03:54 Starting with Furiosa herself, this younger version will be portrayed by Emmy-winning
03:59 actress Anya Taylor-Joy. Fans will know Taylor-Joy from films like The Witch
04:04 and TV series like The Queen's Gambit.
04:06 "I would say that it's much easier to play chess without the burden of an Adam's apple."
04:10 Of course, we cannot forget her voice turn as Princess Peach in the Super Mario Bros. movie.
04:15 "We are going to stop Bowser."
04:17 But even with a varied filmography,
04:20 Furiosa stands as Taylor-Joy's most action-oriented role.
04:23 Chris Hemsworth is no stranger to the genre, however, and he plays the villainous warlord Dementus.
04:29 Not only is Hemsworth stepping out of his usual MCU hero role,
04:40 but based on the trailer, he's also fairly unrecognizable.
04:44 This is thanks to some truly stellar makeup design.
04:47 Another new face to the franchise will be Tom Burke in an undisclosed role.
04:51 Burke received acclaim for his work on the 2016 BBC miniseries War and Peace.
04:55 "You'll have to show me how to do that one."
04:58 "Trade secret, my boy."
05:00 As for who is returning, viewers can look out for fan favorites Nathan-Joan as Rictus Erectus,
05:08 and Angus Sampson as the organic mechanic.
05:10 "Perfect in every way."
05:12 Production.
05:12 Furiosa, a Mad Max saga began filming back in June 2022.
05:17 The production had previously been delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic,
05:21 and commenced when restrictions were lifted.
05:23 According to an Instagram post from Anya Taylor-Joy,
05:26 filming wrapped in October of 2022.
05:29 The intensive production primarily took place in New South Wales, Australia,
05:33 with the two main towns used being Hay and Silverton.
05:36 Release.
05:38 Furiosa, a Mad Max saga is one of the most anticipated films on the 2024 movie release calendar.
05:45 Originally slated for June 23rd, 2023,
05:48 Warner Brothers delayed the release to May 24th, 2024,
05:52 to coincide with Memorial Day weekend in the United States.
05:55 Furiosa will do battle at the box office with other high-profile movies opening that weekend,
06:00 including Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and the Garfield movie.
06:03 [Screaming]
06:07 And while rumors have swirled that Furiosa may make its premiere
06:11 at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival in early May,
06:14 no confirmations have been made at this time.
06:16 Following an exclusive theatrical release, including IMAX showings,
06:21 the film will eventually make its way to the Warner Brothers streaming service Max for home viewing.

06:45 Sequel.
06:48 Miller and co are also said to be working on a direct sequel to Mad Max Fury Road,
06:53 titled Mad Max The Wasteland.
06:55 "I am your redeemer. It is by my hand you will rise from the ashes of this world."
07:05 Miller noted in an interview with Digital Spy that Furiosa is currently
07:09 not featured in that film's story.
07:11 "They're looking for hope."
07:12 "What about you?"
07:14 "Redemption."
07:22 However, he says that with the project a work in progress, the door is still open.
07:27 Meaning there is still the possibility that Furiosa finds a spot in the flick.
07:31 In the meantime, moviegoers will just have to get their
07:34 Furiosa fix when her starring film hits cinemas in 2024.
07:38 "Whatever you have to do, however long it takes."
