Markus Gabler's Fatal Crash @ Bremerhaven 2016 (Aftermath)

A multiple pile-up, involving four riders occurred at the start of the Klasse 8 - Superbike Legends race, which was part of the 59th edition of the Internationale Fischereihafen Rennen in Bremerhaven. The accident happened shortly after eleven o'clock on Pentecost day, Sunday, 15 May 2016, in front of thousands of spectators. All the injured men were immediately assisted by the emergency crews on the race track, before being transferred to the Klinikum Bremerhaven-Reinkenheide in Bremerhaven.

Sadly, one of the injured riders, Markus Gabler, 35-year-old from Bohmte, Niedersachsen, Germany, died on Monday, 16 May 2016 of injuries sustained in the accident. Gabler was riding a 1985 Suzuki GSX-R 750 for team Gabler/Dannhoff Motorsport.

In consequence of the accident, the race was immediately stopped. Racing resumed only in the afternoon, and Stefan Merken of Düren, Germany, was the winner of the Klass 8 - Superbike Legends race, riding the MMT Racing Team-entered 1986 Yamaha MMT 1200 RR.

The Fischereihafen Rennen is one of the last road races in Germany, organized in Bremerhaven, a city at the seaport of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen, Germany, since 1952. A 2,670-kilometer street course near the harbor, using the same finishing straight of the first edition, hosted the event since 2011.

This was reported to be the second fatality involving a competitor within three years. The 2013 edition of the race was marred by the death of Moritz Rode.
