00:00 A food and fun fair to raise funds for the mentally handicapped individuals attracted
00:06 hundreds of people to the Methodist College in Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.
00:11 Organized by Selangor and Federal Territory Association for the Mentally Handicapped or
00:16 SAMH, the one-day fair featured 30 food stalls, which were organized and operated by teachers
00:22 and students of SAMH, along with other dedicated volunteers.
00:27 People present were SAMH President Datim Som Roslan and Deputy President Tan Sri Hazma
00:33 Abdullah.
00:34 Hazma said SAMH requires financial support to meet its annual budget of RM2.5 million,
00:41 which includes costs for running its two centers in Klang, Selangor and Brickfields, Kuala
00:46 Lumpur.
00:47 "The food and fun fair event was organized to collect a target collection of about 200
00:56 people from the UK to augment the operation costs of SAMH for 2024.
01:02 And this association has been here for 59 years now.
01:08 And the objective of this association is to train and give the mentally challenged an
01:14 opportunity to learn and to be as independent as possible, to learn skills so that they
01:22 can survive in this world, whether by working outside or working inside our workshop.
01:29 We hope the public and corporations will continue to support us because we depend mainly on
01:37 the public and the companies to augment our operating costs."
01:41 Several participants of the event said they hope SAMH would receive more support from
01:46 the public to facilitate their operation.
01:49 "This is my daughter Nandini, say hi.
01:52 She used to be at Wisma Harapan, which is an excellent place for special needs children
01:57 to be trained.
01:58 There's also from a young age, they have early intervention and they also have vocational
02:03 training.
02:04 So this fun fair is to raise funds for the center, which has been around for the last
02:09 nearly 60 over years, you know.
02:11 So we hope for public support for this fun fair and also for Wisma Harapan, you know,
02:17 because without a place like this, the children have nowhere to go."
02:21 "It's more about the awareness for the special needs and then we'll let the society
02:26 know that this group of people also need help.
02:30 We need lots of help.
02:32 Other than that, not only funds, supports and courier, maybe life support."
02:40 "Morning, early morning I come ready.
02:42 I'm very happy because so many parents here, so many shop here.
02:47 This is the first time I come here.
02:51 And then I thank you for Wisma Harapan and teachers, parents, friends."
02:57 The fair also included pop-up booths selling handmade crafts, vegetables and egg trays,
03:03 jumble sale and game booths such as mini golf range.
03:07 A clown and a few cartoon character mascots also entertained and delighted attendees
03:12 throughout the event.
