The Johor Baru High Court on Wednesday (Nov 29) sentenced a man who pleaded guilty to being part of an organised crime syndicate to five years in jail.  34-year-old Mohammad Zaheer Ali admitted to have been a member of an organised crime syndicate called Geng Otong. 00:00 The Johor Bahru High Court on Wednesday sentenced a man who pleaded guilty to being part of an organised crime syndicate to five years in jail.

00:11 34-year-old Muhammad Zahir Ali admitted to have been a member of an organised crime syndicate called Gang Oto.

00:19 The offence under Section 130 of the Penal Code carries a prison sentence of not less than five years and not more than 20 years upon conviction.

00:28 The charge sheet stated that Gang Oto was carrying out human smuggling activities involving illegal immigrants from Indonesia in Kota Tinggi between 2015 and 2020.

00:39 Muhammad Zahir was found to have acted as the ground coordinator, managed the travel time and boat departure locations,

00:46 as well as instructed a transporter to pick up the illegal immigrants to be sent to transit premises.

00:52 He took payments of between RM250 and RM350 for each illegal immigrant and managed to help some 10,000 Indonesians return to their country through illegal land routes during the period.

01:06 He was also found to be paying off enforcement agency officials to spooder the human smuggling activities to make sure no arrests were made against the illegal immigrants.

01:17 Judge Abu Bakar Kata ordered for Muhammad Zahir to start his imprisonment from his date of arrest from June 4, 2020.
