Girls gut herring on the quay at North Shields while a Showman tries to stir up trouble. | dG1fclREazl6R0NGQ1k
Transcript
00:00 One of the rare examples in the collection of not just women working, but also a working
00:10 scene from a seaside. Filmed in North Shields, it shows women who followed the Scottish fleet
00:16 as it came down the coast and filleting and selling the fish. The women of North Shields
00:22 were renowned for their independent nature. The gentleman now wearing the white hat is
00:28 actually working for Tweedale, another one of the commissionists associated with Mitchell
00:32 and Kenyon. We see here the fish being ready and now Tweedale is actually staging an impromptu
00:47 bartering scene within the film and a mock battle reminiscent of the other fiction films
00:53 made by Mitchell and Kenyon at the time. The blurring of fiction and reality is apparent
00:59 within this title.

01:30 The Tweedale operator is also seen now manhandling one of the punters and again incorporating
01:36 an element of showmanship into the scene.
