Before they were Silverchair, they rocked this Newcastle telethon

ACM executive editor James Joyce recounts the time he saw Silverchair - or ‘Innocent Criminals’, as they were known then - in their first TV performance 30 years ago.

00:08 The first time that Silverchair performed live on television

00:13 was back in March 1993 when they were called The Innocent Criminals.

00:19 They were appearing on the NBN telethon, NBN being the local TV station in their

00:23 hometown of Newcastle. I happened to be on the judging panel of

00:27 the overnight talent quest of the 93 telethon.

00:30 That's me seated alongside Miss Kim of Romper Room fame

00:34 and her puppet sidekick Mr Doobie. Now I must confess

00:39 I don't actually remember much about that performance

00:43 by The Innocent Criminals. Sorry, I know fans are going to be appalled

00:48 but I do hope that I said something kind and encouraging

00:51 like Mr Doobie would expect.
