Kallie Knoetze vs G.G. Maldonado in a ten round non-title heavyweight bout

Date: August 26, 1978

Venue: Independence Stadium, Mmabatho, Bophuthatswana (now part of South Africa)

Knoetze stance: orthodox

Maldonado stance: orthodox

Kallie Knoetze was a rough and rugged heavyweight, with a slightly crude, brawling style. He turned pro in 1976, and his first big test came later that year when he faced fellow South African, and future WBA world champion, Gerrie Coetzee. The pair had met six times as amateurs, winning three fights each. Coetzee won their pro meeting on points over ten rounds. Knoetze won his next nine bouts, all on home turf. Several of those wins were against fringe contenders from the UK, including Richard Dunn. His biggest win was against Duane Bobick, who was 40-1 at the time. This win streak propelled Knoetze up the rankings, and the WBA was negotiating an elimination tournament to provide its next heavyweight champion. another win would go a long way to securing a place for Knoetze in that tournament.

G.G. Maldonado was a journeyman from Paterson New Jersey. He turned pro in 1971, and had shared a ring with Randy Neumann, Duane Bobick, John Denis and Gerry Cooney, losing to all of them by stoppage. He had a record of 12-7-2 with 3 KOs.
