Kallie Knoetze vs Bill Sharkey in a ten round non-title heavyweight bout

Date: January 13, 1979

Venue: Convention Center, Miami Beach, Florida

Knoetze stance: orthodox

Sharkey stance: orthodox

Following his loss to fellow South African Gerrie Coetzee in October 1976, Kallie Knoetze won his next ten fights, mostly against journeymen. His two most impressive victories were against former European champion and world title challenger Richard Dunn, followed by a third round stoppage of highly-ranked Duane Bobick. This fight against Sharkey was the only time Knoetze fought overseas, and his presence in America was the subject of protests from anti-apartheid demonstrators.

Bill Sharkey was a decent journeyman, but small for a heavyweight at just 5'11" and a little under 200lb. He turned pro in 1974, and won his first 15 fights (11 inside the distance) before losing a close split decision to future world champion Mike Weaver over ten rounds. Sharkey won his next three, before dropping a points decision to Greg Sorrentino. His next fight was a three-way split draw against contender Scott LeDoux.
