00:00 Hello there, welcome to John News today with me Bernice Abubay Dolan. Our headlines former president John Mahama
00:06 Responds to dr. Bamiya's claim that is 24-hour economy policy is already being implemented
00:13 We've got reactions from Ghanaians on this
00:16 And the overlord of Dagbong as the vice-president to see former president John Mahama as a brother and not an enemy
00:27 We bring you more as the two embark on thank-you tours across the country
00:31 and
00:33 National Road Safety Authority says it'll leave no stone unturned as it prepares for the Christmas season
00:40 These and other stories coming up in this 60-minute bulletin, please stay with us
00:50 You
00:52 You
01:15 It's a pleasure to have you here we are coming to you from our studios in Coquemly
01:20 We are live on DS TV go TV around the world by my joy online.com and on your digital
01:26 Televisions now flat bearer of the opposition and DC John Mahama has responded to vice-president. Dr
01:32 Mahmood Bamiya's claim that the 24-hour economy policy is already being implemented
01:38 He says the fact that some companies operate 24 hours does not
01:43 Invalidate a policy that will give incentives to others who decide to sign up
01:49 He's been speaking at an engagement with students of the st
01:52 Joseph's College of Education at Beecham as part of the building Ghana tour in the half region
01:58 But we know that there will be obstacles one you need to provide security
02:03 Because people must be able to work in the night without armed robbers going to attack them
02:09 So it means that we must provide more police officers. We must provide all those companies with security
02:15 So that they are able to do their work
02:17 But if we have to provide more police officers and security men
02:21 It means we'll employ more young people to join the security services to be able to make the 24-hour economy work
02:28 And so it doesn't mean that if already one or two industries are doing it or one or two companies are doing it
02:37 We cannot provide incentives for more of them to do it so that they can provide
02:42 Opportunity for more young people to get work. And so it is our policy will implement it is not by force
02:49 When we come we'll open it
02:51 The initiative is available in a company that wants to work a shift system and work more than the eight hours
02:59 That's the normally work from 8 o'clock to 5 o'clock
03:03 They will sign on and we'll give them tax incentives because if you work the extra shift you will be giving tax breaks
03:10 aside from that you'll be provided with security and
03:13 Everything that you need to be able to employ more people and so it's a project that we will adopt
03:19 We have a group of experts working on it
03:22 We'll roll out the policy and companies that voluntarily want to sign on will be allowed to do so
03:29 You
03:31 Still on politics and campaigns over a lot of backbone Yana a bubba car
03:47 Mahama the second is asking vice president dr. Mahmood Balmier to recognize John Mahama as a brother and not an enemy
03:54 As the political campaigns heat up he stresses
03:58 They are both sons of the land and whoever wins the election will bring
04:03 The reward home he made these comments during a cutsy call paid him by dr. Balmier
04:09 We have to be grateful to all Ghanaians for trusting that only another night I leave Ghana after 2024
04:23 It's a big opportunity for us to demonstrate our maturity
04:27 competence honesty and education to move on forward
04:31 My son, his excellency John a man who is also my son is your fellow competitor in this election
04:37 He's not your enemy or rival
04:39 He's your elder brother and the former president of Ghana who is also being presented by the largest pushing party in our country
04:46 You really like that as president. So as modus, we have already won the election whoever wins the trophy
04:52 Whatever wins the trophy is coming home
04:55 My son, your excellency, I want you to run a clean campaign with your brother
04:59 A campaign devoid of name-calling and insults. You are a fine gentleman and everybody knows that
05:05 So don't let your team mislead you
05:08 It is you that the good Lord has chosen because of what he has put in you and not your team
05:13 Your team is supposed to translate your thoughts and ideas
05:15 including all
05:18 Including what all of you previously agreed on into action and not the other way around
05:23 Mbapre, your team worked tirelessly for you because of what they have seen in you
05:27 So don't disappoint them. Lead them and don't let them lead you or else you have wasted all their efforts and sleepless nights
05:34 So strengthen your team with charisma and good nature. Let people come
05:38 into contact with your
05:41 Good nature in their actions. Only this way can you truly lead and get the work done. So once again, please move
05:48 heaven and earth and run a clean campaign like your ancestors did long after you have left the political scene
05:53 Let's now connect with Samuel Mbura who is with the vice president's team and
06:01 Samuel what has the vice president's response been to this call by Diana?
06:07 Well, the vice president, Dr. Mahmoud Baradwia, said my dear sir,
06:12 is someone who is humble, is someone who is always honest and is someone who would always go into a contest
06:20 with
06:22 ideas not to vilify his opponents. He recognizes John Mahama as his brother
06:28 and he is getting ready for the general election to contest him with ideas and not to
06:34 attack him personally. He has assured Diana that he will do his best to ensure that he brings the trophy home
06:42 with a clean campaign
06:44 Right and beyond that where else are we expecting the vice president today?
06:50 Right. So the vice president is currently on his way to the Bimbila constituency
06:57 That's the constituency of the defence minister Dominic Ndidiwo
07:01 Subsequently he will move to the Savannah region, Damarvo
07:06 to address and also pay a catechism call on the Yakon Ra and other paramilitary groups in that area
07:13 and later address El Rado's death
07:16 So that's the outline for today
07:18 And then afterwards we know that Parliament is supposed to begin the debate on the budget
07:25 So some of the MPs, including him, will have to go back to Accra and continue with that national assignment
07:32 So that's the latest news. We know that the majority leader was between yesterday
07:37 but because of that equality court assignment, he had to leave back to Accra for the parliamentary session
07:45 So basically he should be ending his campaign today
07:50 Right. Thank you Samuel Mbura there for us
07:53 And as you may be aware, these two flag bearers of the governing New Patriotic Party and the opposition NDC
08:00 have been throwing jabs at each other
08:02 Political scientist Dr Kwame Asa Sante has been reacting to what appears to be a campaign that is already brewing
08:09 He spoke with me earlier on Newsdesk
08:11 Speaking, whatever the president is saying, he is just opening himself up for all manner of attacks and all that
08:22 But if you look at it from the other perspective, you can also grant that, what do you expect him to say?
08:31 If his opponent is coming out strongly in terms of ideas and all that, he also must counter
08:38 But in all these things, what we do is that in campaign, you come out with a message that will really stand the test of time
08:45 You can play propaganda, you can do all manner of things
08:52 At the end of the day, you have to keep in mind that the people you are dealing with are the enemy
08:57 That will usher us into another realm, the realm of records
09:01 Remember that politics is a contest of ideas and a referendum of your work
09:07 So you see people are now calling for ideas
09:10 Come out with the ideas that you have about the problems and solutions of this country
09:14 And then people are also calling for the records
09:17 If you listen to the vice president, all that he is saying, point to the fact that tell us what you did when you were in office
09:24 So records will come up for discussion
09:27 And I believe that will be the beginning of a campaign
09:32 I hope and pray that they will move along this line
09:38 And instead of their sticking to what Sly and then Tarasak have made
09:45 We don't want that, we want real issues discussed
09:47 So I would propose that, look, we should, the media should be able to create a platform where there will be a live debate on the issue
09:56 And let's see who is who
09:58 And then that will also give citizens the opportunity to interrogate the issues, assess the issues
10:05 And at the end of the day, make informed judgments about what's true
10:10 This is News Today with me, Bernice Abubaydoulan
10:14 So now ahead of the December 19 district level elections
10:17 Work on some developmental projects in some communities in the Ashanti region
10:22 Especially road networks have intensified
10:25 Abandoned road construction projects at Sokoban for instance
10:29 Have seen some rehabilitation works spearheaded by aspiring and incumbent assembly members
10:35 But some residents and motorists say the intensified road projects are to influence them in the upcoming elections
10:41 Nana Bwachi Yadom has the rest of the story
10:44 At Sokoban, a one kilometer stretch of road which had turned a debt trap
10:50 Has been rehabilitated through the initiative of the local assembly member who is seeking re-election on December 19
10:57 The road construction at Bokanchi in the Akimangwa Bidja district has been abandoned for years
11:04 The road which serves as alternative access to regions in the north currently has contractors busy at work
11:11 Some residents are excited at the attention to the road construction
11:15 But others believe the intensified attention is to influence votes in the upcoming district level election
11:22 We have seen that contractors are on site
11:31 We know it's because of the upcoming district level election
11:34 We don't want them to start and end after the election
11:38 This is a major road which needs all the attention
11:41 We have always complained
11:44 They are now constructing the road due to the upcoming elections
11:47 The MP has failed us all
11:50 We have always complained
11:53 They are now constructing the road due to the upcoming elections
11:56 The MP has failed us all
11:59 We have always complained
12:02 They are now constructing the road due to the upcoming elections
12:05 The MP has failed us all
12:08 We have always complained
12:11 They are now constructing the road due to the upcoming elections
12:14 They are now constructing the road due to the upcoming elections
12:17 They are now constructing the road due to the upcoming elections
12:20 They are now constructing the road due to the upcoming elections
12:23 Meanwhile, concerned motorists and residents have prevailed on the local assembly and government to ensure project completion

21:57 To the on-train eye, it is a normal day on the Accra-Temamotoway
22:02 For months, the road has been deteriorating with some speed
22:07 The speed limit on this stretch reads 90 km/h
22:11 But with the iron rods popping out in gapping holes
22:15 On what was once Garner's Esprit Road
22:18 Driving at 90 km/h could be suicidal
22:21 Drivers have to drive at a tortoise pace
22:24 In order to navigate the dangerous potholes
22:27 Apart from the dangers posed by these dangerous potholes
22:31 These drivers have other challenges to deal with on the road
22:35 A number of the bridges on the motorway
22:38 Are without their protective metal railings
22:41 And for drivers, it adds to their fear
22:44 Jerry Asamoah uses the motorway daily
22:47 He says the absence of the crash barriers
22:50 Adds to the already precarious situation they find themselves in
22:54 Whilst driving on the road
22:56 The open drains on the road are dangerous
23:12 Imagine someone driving at speed from the roundabout
23:15 And losing control
23:17 They need to fix them with some iron crash barriers
23:20 Alex also uses the motorway
23:43 He fears the absence of crash barriers
23:46 Increases the risk level on the stretch
23:49 And wants the defect to be fixed
23:51 Some pedestrians are also concerned about the danger
24:16 We are not feeling comfortable
24:19 But we don't have any way out
24:22 Although government has plans to reconstruct the motorway
24:25 It is uncertain when the project will commence
24:28 In the meantime, drivers want the road to be rehabilitated
24:33 And the crash barriers to be fixed
24:35 In order to make the motorway reclaim its lost glory
24:39 As Ghana's number one express road network
24:43 And make driving on it safe again
24:46 Rejoice Zemefakpe's report read to you
24:50 Let's now hear from Pearl Satakla
24:54 Who speaks for the National Road Safety Authority
24:58 As I'm talking to you, currently
25:00 We have engaged a multi-stakeholder meeting
25:05 In which your reporter is duly here to cover
25:10 To now come and discuss
25:15 Or think about to discuss
25:17 The pragmatic and practical way we can fix the street lights
25:21 Including our traffic lights on our roads
25:23 Including the motorway
25:24 And so all the experts are here
25:27 From Ghana Highway Authority, Department of Urban Roads
25:31 All the concerned stakeholders, they are here
25:35 And so by the close of day, we'll know the reasons
25:38 Why these street lights, these rehabilitations and developments
25:43 Have been solved and the way forward
25:46 And so by close of day, we'll have this
25:48 We'll be invited, they are directed, they are here
25:50 To explain to us into the future
25:52 Getting to the end of the year, we will not leave any stone unturned
25:56 For the appropriate agencies to do what they are supposed to do
26:00 To curb crashes on our roads
26:02 Or to reduce its occurrence
26:04 And so after this, we are going to sit with them one on one
26:09 Press them all, make them adhere to all the standards
26:14 And the mandates that they are supposed to adhere to
26:17 And so shortly, you will see changes
26:20 We were on Department of Urban Roads
26:23 And they came to us privately
26:25 That they've been able to gather some funds
26:29 To repair the traffic lights
26:31 They started and they stopped
26:33 We went to them and the same story
26:36 So today we'll get to know why the reasons
26:39 They stopped fixing the non-functioning traffic lights
26:43 And so you'll get to know by close of day
26:45 This is one of our strategies
26:48 Now still on road safety, it's been five years since the trailer ran
26:52 Over five schoolgirls at Asin Chichure in the central region
26:56 Killing some of them instantly
26:58 The girls aged between 11 and 14
27:01 Were all biological daughters of a 49-year-old carpenter
27:04 He says justice has eluded him because he's poor
27:07 He opened up at a remembrance event in Accra for victims of road accidents
27:11 And he said that he was not alone
27:13 He says justice has eluded him because he's poor
27:16 He opened up at a remembrance event in Accra for victims of road accidents
27:20 Benedicta Adobe Asari's report
27:22 The girls, Eva, Vivian, Abigail, Emanuela and Lydia
27:31 Were sent on an errand by their school teacher during break time
27:35 As they waited on the pavement across the road to fetch their teacher's items
27:40 He was there for them, crashing and killing them instantly
27:44 Our children went to school and the only news we got was that
27:50 The trailer had crashed them to death
27:52 It's been five years since the incident
27:55 But father of the deceased girls, Yawa Asari says
27:59 He's still traumatized by the incident
28:02 Especially because no one appears to be interested in helping him get justice
28:08 After that, I told him to go to the DCO's office
28:14 So that he can get his education
28:19 After their burial, all efforts to seek justice have proved futile
28:24 I have lost hope
28:26 Both the car owner and the driver are nowhere to be found
28:29 The car was moved from where the incident happened after about a week
28:34 With no traces of the perpetrators
28:37 It's been three days since the incident
28:42 It's been a week since the incident
28:45 He joined a group of people who have been victims of road accidents
28:49 At an event to vent his pain about not receiving justice
28:53 The event, organized by Accident Victims Support Ghana, an NGO
28:58 Sought to raise 10 million Ghana cedis to support other road crash victims
29:03 I couldn't do anything, I was just bedridden
29:07 I couldn't move around
29:09 But with the support of the wheelchair, it gave me relief
29:13 My dad is relieved
29:15 He doesn't carry me around anymore
29:18 I can come out with the wheelchair and move around freely
29:22 I thank Accident Victims Support for the support they've given me
29:27 I'm very grateful
29:29 And I want to appeal to everyone to help support the activity
29:35 Support the foundation, that is
29:38 Support in any way they can
29:40 Founder of Accident Victims Support Ghana, Reverend Cyril Crabbe
29:45 Asked for support to help ease the pain of survivors and their families
29:50 We all have to come to the table, find solutions
29:53 And part of the solution is to address it financially
29:57 You've heard the stories yourself
29:59 You can see how the victims are in dire need of financial support
30:03 And so we want people to personalize it
30:06 Personalize the crash
30:08 Personalize the plight of the victims
30:10 Personalize the problem that we are facing in the country
30:14 The crashes that can happen to you
30:16 So if you have the opportunity, what will you do?
30:18 You have to support people who repair their cars
30:21 But how about repairing the human beings?
30:24 How about making sure that somebody who never paid to be in such a position
30:29 Now finds himself there
30:31 The driver could be free, but what about the victim?
30:35 Thanks for staying here on JOY News today with me, Bernice Abubidu-Lanza
30:48 We've got business news coming up in a bit, do stay
30:51 Hello, welcome, time to do business with me, Emma Davis
31:00 Out of the 47 countries that have ratified their instruments
31:06 Under the African Continental Free Trade Area
31:09 Only 7 countries have so far begun trading among themselves
31:13 Under the Pact
31:14 Ghana, Cameroon, Kenya, Egypt and three others
31:18 Have all received certificates of origin to trade freely without trade barriers
31:23 Ceramics, tea and AC components are but some of the few items that are being traded under AFTA
31:31 Speaking to JOY Business at the joint ECOWAS North Africa Multi-Stakeholder Forum on AFTA
31:37 Special Advisor to the Secretary General of AFTA, Peter Joy, said
31:43 The Secretariat is hopeful of increasing the numbers to about 30 by next year
31:48 The joint Multi-Stakeholder Forum, which is being organized by Third World Network Africa
31:55 Seeks to strengthen alliances, share information and perspectives on Africa
32:00 As well as fashion out agenda for future engagements among stakeholders and civil organizations in ECOWAS and North Africa
32:08 Speaking to JOY Business Special Advisor to the Secretary General of AFTA, Peter Joy, said
32:14 Despite the challenges being faced, enough progress has been made to realize the optimization of the trade pact
32:21 He added that, so far, only 7 out of the 47 countries that have ratified are trading among themselves
32:29 "So where we are currently, we have 47 countries that are state parties to the agreement establishing the AFCFTA
32:38 Another thing we are also doing is getting the countries to trade
32:42 So what we've introduced, or what His Excellency, the Secretary General of the AFCFTA, the Secretariat has introduced
32:48 Is something we call the AFCFTA Guided Trade Initiative
32:53 So that is just getting the countries to actually start trading
32:58 So what we've done is to start with 7 countries
33:01 So 7 of our countries, they have certificates of origin, they have customs procedures in place
33:07 And they've actually started trading"
33:09 Economist Dr Patrick Esumene called on government to be deliberate with its trade laws
33:14 To ensure local businesses leverage on the potential of the AFCFTA
33:18 "The question is, what programs have you put in place to ensure that Ghanaian businesses are strategically positioned
33:25 To make sure that when implementation is in full force, we are ready
33:30 And I think that is where the big ten is
33:33 So you have to think about competitiveness
33:36 The competitiveness of Ghanaian businesses, and that comes from policy
33:40 So what has to happen among the continental bodies
33:45 In terms of easing the bureaucracy and the restrictions on doing business across borders"
33:55 The forum, which is a 3-day event, will bring together civil society organizations
33:59 Key private sector players, women organizations, trade unions, among others
34:05 For Joy Business
34:06 Pious Kujubaka
34:12 Government says it will demystify the business environment through its regulatory framework
34:17 Set to be presented to parliament for approval
34:22 According to the Trade and Industry Minister, KT Hammond
34:25 His outfit is committed to supporting private sector businesses
34:29 Through technology to thrive and contribute to the country's economic growth
34:33 There's more in this report
34:35 The Trade and Industry Minister, KT Hammond said
34:39 His outfit is committed to supporting private sector businesses
34:43 Through technology to thrive and contribute to the country's economic growth
34:47 He reiterated government's commitment to cushioning low-carb businesses
34:51 To take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement
34:55 This economic transformation is private sector led
35:01 This is because Ghana, like many other countries, recognizes the pivotal role
35:10 That a stronger partnership between the government and the private sector plays
35:17 In fostering economic growth, innovation, and sustainable development
35:24 This transformation is about creating an environment where businesses can thrive
35:32 Where innovation is encouraged and where opportunities are abundant
35:38 The vision of self-reliance and economic independence
35:43 Where Ghana takes its rightful place on the global stage of growth and prosperity
35:55 Executive Director of the UK Ghana Chamber of Commerce, Adjoba Chiyama said
36:00 Her outfit will deepen Earth trade relations with the United Kingdom
36:04 It's been an amazing night of celebration
36:08 Of celebrating our member companies, celebrating our chamber
36:13 And also celebrating UK-Ghana trading relations
36:18 Which dates back over several decades
36:22 And all of the winners are deserving award winners
36:27 Our founding businesses in our membership
36:30 Who are contributing so much to the economy of Ghana
36:34 And have strengthened the trading relations between Ghana and the UK
36:39 I am also especially pleased about the entries that we received
36:44 Even from amongst the wholly owned Ghanaian businesses
36:48 Who do not necessarily have trading relations with us
36:51 But are proud to be members of our chamber
36:55 The UK GCC established in 2016 in Ghana
36:58 Has promoted trade between the UK and Ghana
37:01 That's all for business, my name is Emma Davis

37:07 Up next is sports, Tuesday
37:09 You're watching JN Today and it's time for sports
37:13 My name is Harun Obarek
37:15 Now the Black Stars head coach Chris Hilton says
37:18 The previous outcome between Ghana and Comoros
37:21 Is irrelevant in the upcoming 2020 season
37:24 But the team is ready to go
37:26 Hilton says the previous outcome between Ghana and Comoros
37:29 Is irrelevant in the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifier
37:32 Later today
37:34 The last encounter between the two teams was at the 2021
37:37 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon
37:39 Where Comoros won 3-2
37:41 Leading to the Black Stars elimination from the tournament
37:43 Now Hilton says the result has no bearing on today's game
37:46 Every game we play is a difficult game
37:51 Whether we play at home in Ghana
37:54 Or we play away from home
37:56 We are on the back of a win against Madagascar
38:00 And we are conscious that Comoros played very well
38:04 On Friday against Central African Republic
38:07 So our preparation has been the same as it's always been
38:11 We have to prepare exactly the same
38:14 For every single game that we play
38:17 And we know the difficulty of every game
38:20 And we have to make sure that we are prepared
38:23 Every game is different
38:25 So whatever results they have ever been in the past
38:30 We always have to look at this next game
38:34 As a one-off game
38:36 Always
38:37 And this is what all our preparations have been for
38:39 We are on the back of a good win on Friday
38:43 And so are Comoros
38:45 So both teams I presume will come into the game with good confidence
38:50 Having won their last game
38:52 Our preparations are for a very tough game
38:55 Against a Comoros team that are playing at home
38:58 And are on the back of a good win
39:01 And all we can do is make sure that we prepare ourselves for that
39:05 We know that to win tomorrow
39:09 We will have to play at a good level
39:12 This we know and this we understand
39:15 And this is what we have prepared for
39:17 We know we are playing against a team that is in good form at the moment
39:21 But we are also on the back of a good win
39:27 This is a completely different game
39:30 We know that we will have to play at a good level
39:33 We are away from home
39:35 And this is normal
39:37 We know we have to play at a good level
39:39 But you always have to be confident as a team
39:41 Always

39:46 Elsewhere, the National Sports Authority has asked three Ghana Premier League clubs to seek alternative venues
39:52 where the Accra Sports Stadium is set to be closed down for Christmas activities
39:56 In a letter signed by the Director General of the NSA, Peter Chumessy

40:04 The affected clubs, namely Hearts of Oak, Great Olympics and Accra Lions

40:41 with his highly anticipated Awee African Yet Festival which took place over the weekend

40:56 Becky of Our Entertainment Desk was there and has more
40:59 Yes, that's me
41:04 Just like any of the 21,000 people here inside the multi-purpose State Farm Arena located in Atlanta, Georgia
41:13 we're all here for Nigerian musician Davido's first ever Awee Festival
41:30 But, before Ogbar's incredible entrance, Ghana was well represented
41:36 first by Kwesi Arthur who reintroduced himself to the excited crowd
41:42 Then came in the Terminator, or should I just go by his name, Kim Promise
