00:00 >> What was it about John Luciano before you were scouting him,
00:03 before he came here that made you know that he was going to be a good fit for
00:07 your system?
00:08 >> Well, what's funny with John is, when I was coaching at the Dolphins,
00:13 John came to our local pro day.
00:16 And he was like a fringe guy that you're like, this guy's got something to him.
00:20 And you liked him at the University of Miami too.
00:21 He was rough and just the same guy as today, a gritty, tough, hard nose,
00:26 very good player at the U.
00:28 And then he comes in the league.
00:30 And so when we scouted, we're at that point where we're like,
00:33 we're counting on a lot of young guys, so let's keep looking and seeing.
00:36 And just like with our system, not a lot of people run as much outside zone and
00:42 things that we ask our guys to do.
00:44 They do it in little bits and pieces.
00:47 And so you have to look hard to say, okay, I see it there, I see it there,
00:50 I see it there, and how can he do it?
00:53 Can he do it a lot?
00:54 And with him, it was we were scouting him, and
00:55 they actually didn't run any of that stuff really in New York.
00:59 But they pulled him on the toss crack plays.
01:02 And you could see when he pulled, you're like, there it is.
01:05 There's that little bit of quickness.
01:06 There's that little bit of something in there.
01:08 It was the same thing with banks.
01:09 We got banks on Notre Dame.
01:10 It's like, Trent looked and said, this dude's a monster.
01:14 He's not gonna fit in our system.
01:15 But then all of a sudden you saw him go out on the screen and
01:17 you saw him pull on a power play.
01:18 And you're like, it's there.
01:20 But what you have to do is you have to then drill it every day to get it out of
01:23 him, and you saw it in John.
01:24 And so he was already a good pro, hardworking, smart, tough, all those things.
01:29 But then you saw just enough of what he needs,
01:32 the skill set he needs to play in our system, it was there.
01:34 >> You've been around Trent since the beginning, basically.
01:37 And was he really only 75% the other day?
01:42 >> I think that's probably a pretty accurate assessment of where he was,
01:45 seeing how he was on Friday.
01:47 And then how the guys managed the pain, going up to the game and everything.
01:51 So there's always, they get to a certain point and
01:55 they know that they can probably make it through.
01:56 I've always referenced these other cats, but Jonathan Ogden was the same guy.
02:00 I remember him, it was the first time I heard it.
02:02 We were in Baltimore, and he goes, yeah, the guy I'm playing today,
02:05 I can play at 75, 80%.
02:07 Now, if we were playing Dwight Freeney, I think I mentioned this,
02:09 I don't know if I could go at 80%, 85%.
02:12 I don't think anybody, the 100% thing in this league is everybody gets hurt, right?
02:16 And so playing at 100% once the season starts is really hard.
02:19 To say you feel fresh as a daisy and all that is not probably it.
02:23 So, but yeah, I would say that's probably what he was.
02:25 But it didn't show.
02:27 I think there were certain plays, it wasn't like the championship game a few
02:31 years ago against the Rams where he wasn't anywhere near that.
02:34 And then it showed on almost every play.
02:36 >> Chris, how's Colton looked at practice this week?
02:39 And who do you have most confidence in at right tackle, it's not Colton.
02:45 >> I'm sorry to interrupt you.
02:47 Colt is, Colt looks fine right now.
02:50 Right now he's doing well.
02:52 I don't know the extent or all those things.
02:54 Like I said, I'm really hard pressed to comment anything on injuries other than
02:56 the fact that he looked fine at practice today.
02:59 And then right now it'd be go with Matt Pryor.
03:02 But although Jalen did such a nice job at left,
03:07 you'd think if Matt stumbles or doesn't do as well,
03:10 if something were to happen to Colton, that maybe Jalen would go in at that spot.
03:14 We have that flexibility.
03:15 Same thing at the left if for whatever reason Jalen's not doing well,
03:17 Matt could go to the left.
03:18 They both can play both sides.
03:19 It's just that with having them up that way, they can focus on one and
03:23 it does help them in prep instead of having a swing guy.
03:25 >> What was your impression of Kyle at the end of the game?
03:30 Force feeding McCaffrey after he asked for it, seemed like kind of an old school.
03:34 That kind of did that with Terrell Davis to get him 2,000 yards.
03:36 What was your impression of that?
03:38 >> Yeah, I think you can always get to a point where you're like,
03:42 risk of injury, I get it.
03:45 Man, like I called McDaniel, I said, dude,
03:47 it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to break the scoring record, right?
03:51 This is a unbelievable record here, right?
03:56 I think it's the right thing to do.
03:58 Personally, I think it's the right thing to do.
04:00 I could be wrong, but I think there's too many times,
04:05 like I'll never forget, sorry, another story.
04:07 I'll never forget, we were playing the Tennessee Titans, and
04:10 we were at Baltimore.
04:12 And we came in at halftime, and they were kicking our butts.
04:15 I mean, up and down, we had no, and I came in and sat down, and
04:18 we were talking about plays to run the second half.
04:20 I said, hey, did we have a first down?
04:23 And somebody looked at the stat, she said, no, well, we got one, but
04:26 it got called back by a panel.
04:27 I said, that's the first time, I mean, and it was like 15 years.
04:30 I said, I've never played an NFL game and not had a first down at halftime.
04:33 So I like those firsts, cuz I know for it to be a first in the NFL is a big deal.
04:38 So to be able to score that many touchdowns, that many consecutive games,
04:41 is a really, really big deal.
04:43 Sorry, New England Patriots, see, I love this too, but New England Patriots,
04:46 all of a sudden before the kickoff, I'm in Miami, we're playing the Patriots.
04:50 Olindo Mare is the kicker, and he comes up lame in pregame warm-ups.
04:54 And all of a sudden, Wes Welker becomes our kickoff,
04:57 our field goal kicker, our receiver.
05:00 So he kicks a field goal, he kicks off and makes a tackle on a kickoff, right?
05:04 He kicks extra points.
05:05 He scored, I think, he might have had a receiving touchdown.
05:09 I didn't realize all this was going on.
05:11 I was actually the offensive coordinator.
05:13 I would have handed him a run to get him in, but
05:15 his shoes end up going to the Hall of Fame on Monday.
05:17 We lost, but you realize this was a pretty special moment.
05:20 They took his shoes and they sent him to Canton,
05:22 cuz nobody had ever done all those things in one game.
05:24 So now I forget the original question, but the Christian McCaffrey, no, I did.
05:29 But Christian McCaffrey and his deal, so yeah,
05:31 I think it's a really special thing and it was something worthwhile.
05:35 >> What did McDaniel say to you when you- >> I text him and
05:38 Mike doesn't respond to texts during the season.
05:39 So I got to a couple other people in the organization.
05:41 I said, dude, I would have gone for it.
05:43 They're like, we didn't think so, no way.
05:45 I said, it's 70 to whatever it was, all right, dude, come on.
05:48 I mean, another seven points, it's over, so go for it.
05:51 But I get it, I get both sides of that story.
05:53 >> He big-timed you?
05:54 >> Excuse me? >> He big-timed you?
05:56 >> He did not big-time me.
05:58 If Mike does not respond to people during the season, he's very hard.
06:01 It's been that way forever.
06:02 It's kind of a bone of contention with everybody, he doesn't.
06:05 And then by week, he did send one text, which is nice.
06:08 >> Chris, this Tampa D line, what do you see?
06:12 Cantsy, Veya, Wilson, they got a lot of different kinds of players.
06:17 >> Yep, as always, the defensive line is a very, very talented group.
06:19 Vita Vey is a talent, man, he's a beast and does a great job for them.
06:24 94, the young kid from Pitt, I don't know all their names right now.
06:27 94 does a really, really good job.
06:29 The edge rushers are good.
06:29 I mean, this is a talented rush group.
06:31 And you gotta be on point, you gotta be on point.
06:34 We've had to be every week.
06:35 I mean, these guys are, it's nice to have them at home.
06:37 I think when we played Cincinnati, not a great game for us.
06:40 But protection wise, we held up okay against those guys.
06:42 And it was because I think you get them on the grass, you have the cadence,
06:44 you're not going silent count.
06:46 All those things add up to help us at home.
06:48 Now, that doesn't mean they don't come in and just run us over too.
06:51 They're a good rush group.
06:52 And Todd Bowles is not afraid to pressure and make it really hard on everybody.
06:55 So I think they're a talented group.
06:57 And again, another group we gotta be very well prepared for.
07:00 >> Looking at what they've done this year,
07:01 have they blitzed as much as they normally do?
07:04 >> I don't count those things cuz I think it's all statistic of one.
07:08 It's what are they gonna do against you?
07:09 You know what I'm saying?
07:10 It's like it's a one game.
07:12 It's yeah, we could say it's a trend.
07:13 But why were they blitzing Philly?
07:14 Or why were they not blitzing Philly?
07:16 And then why were they blitzing this team and that team?
07:18 So to me, it's like I don't really look at it that much.
07:20 Todd Bowles has been coaching forever.
07:21 He's got every blitz in the book known to man.
07:23 And kinda like when the guy from the Giants came in here, it's all there.
07:27 And it's just what are you gonna see?
07:28 And why he would decide to do it to stop you.
07:31 And even though you look back and say, okay, well he did this to Kyle here.
07:34 He did this to us at this other spot.
07:36 And then you're like, there's a whole other bag of tricks.
07:38 And then he looks at the season this year and sees what maybe we have something that
07:42 needs fixing that they could pick on, so who knows?
07:45 >> All good?
07:47 >> Thanks, thanks for putting up with my stories.
