Takeaways from Detroit Lions 41-38 shootout victory against Los Angeles Chargers.
Transcript
00:00 John, the Lions defeat the L. A. Chargers in a must see shootout 41 to 38 on Sunday in L. A.
00:07 What do you make of that big victory on the road for Dan Campbell's team?
00:11 Yeah, Vito, what an entertaining football game. I mean, you went out to Los Angeles SoFi Stadium
00:17 and it was a contest that was really run by the offenses. Both teams defenses did not gain any
00:23 traction throughout the game. I mean, for the Detroit Lions, giving up that many touchdowns
00:28 consecutively to the Chargers really made it more challenging for Dan Campbell's offense. But
00:34 in a game like that, when the offense is counted on to step up, Jared Goff, the revamped offensive
00:40 line, David Montgomery and Jameer Gibbs stepped up and Amon Ross St. Brown had a career high day.
00:47 So you look at it and I think it just goes to show you, Vito, this Detroit Lions football team
00:52 really can win in a variety of ways. They can win close games. They can win tough, gritty contests.
00:58 And in a game when you needed to score a bunch of points, Jared Goff came and delivered. Another
01:03 storyline in this contest, Vito, Dan Campbell's aggressiveness. Listen, he has said it and he's
01:09 going to repeat it. And continuously, he has said in a game where he feels like the offense needs
01:15 the football, he is not going to shy away from being aggressive. And in a key situation on fourth
01:21 down and two, many might have decided to kick the field goal and give the football back to the
01:26 Chargers with a little over a minute left. But no, Dan Campbell went for it and by being able to
01:32 execute, by Jared Goff being able to find tight end Sam Laporta on fourth and two to keep the
01:37 chains moving, the Lions were able to milk the clock and eventually kick the game-winning field
01:42 goal. So in this week, Vito, the Lions earned their seventh victory and Dan Campbell's aggressiveness
01:48 was a very key factor. And I think that for the Detroit Lions going forward, a definite shot in
01:54 the arm of confidence, knowing that they can play a variety of different ways. And to be seven and
02:00 two at this point in the season, returning home to face a Bears team that you're clearly better than,
02:06 it really bodes well for the Lions' chances in the division and in the NFC on their way to a
02:11 playoff push. The Lions now 15 and four in their last 19 games dating back to last season, John.
02:17 Pretty incredible for Detroit there. Thanks for all the time.
