00:00 (upbeat music)
00:02 We just got done riding BMW Motorrad's 2022 F900.
00:29 XR.
00:31 This is a middle weight plus size adventure sport
00:36 from BMW Motorrad out of Germany.
00:39 Now, BMW actually introduced this particular model
00:42 for the 2020 model year.
00:45 And we were there at the official press introduction.
00:48 Make sure to check out that written review and that video.
00:53 Also check out our MC commute review and video.
00:58 There's a ton of fun factoids
01:01 about this particular model in that content.
01:05 Check it out.
01:06 Back to the 2022 version.
01:08 BMW Motorrad hasn't changed a whole lot or anything
01:12 besides the price for the 2022 model year.
01:15 I still really like this bike.
01:17 This 895 CC parallel twin,
01:21 despite it having a little bit older style architecture,
01:25 you have to remember the engine's based
01:26 from the original F800GS.
01:29 The engine's a little bit long in the tooth,
01:31 but flat out, it just plain works.
01:34 This engine has gobs of torque at lower RPM.
01:38 It has a nice, pleasing V-twin-esque character,
01:43 and it's just a fun engine to ride.
01:46 Now, another thing I really like about this bike
01:48 is although it weighs almost 500 pounds
01:50 with this 4.1 gallon fuel tank filled to the brim,
01:54 it is exceptionally nimble.
01:56 I love how easy this bike handles around turns
02:01 and in the city.
02:02 It's a very easy motorcycle to ride.
02:06 I also like all of the creature comforts
02:09 that this bike has.
02:10 Now, this 2022 F900XR is actually fitted
02:14 with BMW's premium package,
02:16 which comes at a $2,400 upcharge.
02:20 With that package, you also get the select package,
02:23 and that comes with all the bells and whistles.
02:26 We have electronic semi-active suspension adjustment.
02:29 We have heated grips, cruise control,
02:32 keyless ignition, so you don't need an ignition key
02:35 to start the bike.
02:36 You need a key fob instead.
02:38 It also has the luggage mounts.
02:41 Now, I wish we actually had the accessory luggage
02:44 on this vehicle.
02:45 That would really have taken things to the next level,
02:47 but hopefully next time, we can try that out.
02:50 But it's just loaded with all the bells and whistles.
02:54 I really like the high level of comfort
02:56 that this bike affords.
02:58 Now, it's got a nice upright riding position.
03:01 The seat is nice and comfy.
03:03 This bike's really well-suited to long days in the saddle.
03:08 We talked about the engine.
03:09 I also like that the drive gearing
03:11 inside the six-speed transmission,
03:14 it's a little bit on the tall side.
03:15 So when you're riding at 80 miles per hour on the freeway,
03:18 the engine's not spinning at a really ridiculously high RPM.
03:23 That just makes for more comfort
03:25 and better fuel economy as well.
03:28 We average right around 37, 36 miles per gallon
03:32 on this motorcycle.
03:33 And that's where one of the real gripes comes from
03:36 is a 4.1-gallon fuel tank is a tad too small
03:40 for an adventure sport bike
03:42 that can also double as a touring bike.
03:44 We'd like to see a larger five-gallon fuel tank next time.
03:48 I also really like BMW's slick 6.5-inch color TFT display.
03:53 BMW's been fitting these displays
03:56 since the 2019 R1250GS debuted,
04:01 and the display is class-leading.
04:03 No other motorcycle manufacturer makes a better display
04:06 than BMW Motorrad right now.
04:08 The thumbwheel apparatus that they introduced
04:11 on the K1600 GTL, it still works really well.
04:14 It's very easy to navigate the menus.
04:16 I really like BMW's Connected app
04:19 that's available for iOS and Android-powered smartphones.
04:23 It allows you to pair your phone to the vehicle.
04:26 You can do turn-by-turn directions right on the display.
04:30 You can also check your maintenance intervals
04:33 and see the fuel level
04:35 and do all other kinds of fun things with that app.
04:38 I also really like the bright LED lighting on this bike,
04:41 the adaptive headlights that come
04:43 as part of the premium package.
04:46 Those are all really nice features,
04:48 as is the two-way adjustable windscreen.
04:52 I wish the windscreen was a little bit taller
04:54 in its high position, but it's still nice
04:57 that BMW gives you the option
04:58 of two different windscreen heights,
05:01 and that tool-less little lever,
05:03 it just really makes it easy to use.
05:06 Overall, I really like this 2022 F900XR motorcycle.
05:10 At its $11,695 base price, I really like it.
05:15 But then you add in the $2,400 premium package
05:19 with another $250 for this special black paint
05:23 and these plastic hand guards and the destination charge,
05:27 and now the bike costs nearly $15,000, $14,990.
05:32 That's a lot of money for a mid-sized bike.
05:38 Still, if you're looking for a motorcycle
05:41 that's very easy to ride, very nimble,
05:44 very compact, very versatile,
05:46 it can run errands well around town,
05:49 you can do some light-duty touring on it,
05:51 it's fun on sporty stretches of roads,
05:53 then this F900XR might be good for you.
05:58 Well, folks, that's a wrap
06:00 from today's 2022 F900XR review.
