00:00 Jared Leto hasn't made it to Mars, but he did make it to the top of New York City's
00:04 Empire State Building.
00:06 The 51-year-old actor climbed part of the iconic skyscraper on November 9th, sharing
00:11 with NBC's Today what the journey was like for him, telling the outlet, "I was more
00:15 excited than nervous, to tell you the truth.
00:17 But I have to be honest, it was very, very hard.
00:20 It was a lot harder than I thought it would be.
00:22 Just the endurance that it took, the stamina that it took, and it was very sharp."
00:26 Jared also revealed he chose to do this historical task because it was on his bucket list, and
00:32 to promote his band 30 Seconds to Mars' 2024 world tour.
00:36 "It's incredible to watch the sunrise overlooking the city that's meant so much
00:40 to me.
00:41 Ever since I was a kid, New York stood for the place that you went to make your dreams
00:44 come true.
00:45 And as a young kid, I wanted to be an artist, and New York was the place that you came to
00:49 be an artist.
00:50 And the Empire State Building was always that symbol for me."
00:53 The Dallas Buyers Club actor is the first person to climb to the top of the Empire State
00:57 Building legally, landmark officials told Today.
01:01 This isn't the first time Jared has made some daredevil choices.
01:04 The musician has bungee jumped into the crowd during his 30 Seconds to Mars concert, and
01:08 he is a very well-seasoned rock climber.
01:11 AXS Hollywood chatted with the Oscar winner back in September, and he opened up about
01:14 his high-flying hobby.
01:16 "You definitely commit.
01:18 We saw, I saw that video of you jumping off onto the stage, basically flying onto the
01:23 stage at Lollapalooza."
01:24 "Yeah, that's one thing I learned how to do in COVID is fly.
01:27 It's very difficult.
01:29 It drains your battery on your phone too, it's terrible."
01:34 "Do you get nervous to do that kind of stuff or no?"
01:37 "I don't really probably get as nervous as the next person, but I, because I do a
01:43 lot of climbing."
01:44 "I saw that as well, you're scaling mountains in your free time."
01:47 "I'm scaling mountains and sometimes buildings.
01:49 Whatever there is to climb, I'm just really obsessed with climbing.
01:54 So jumping off the stage is really fun.
01:56 Like I've done a lot of crowd surfing, I've jumped off of balconies, I've jumped off
02:00 of speakers, but jumping off the very top of the stage at Lollapalooza was kind of a
02:06 new, it was a hundred and something feet.
02:08 But it was fun.
02:09 Just a good excuse to have a little fun."
02:12 "I get scared just looking at you.
02:15 I'm terrified of heights.
02:17 I don't know how you do that."
02:20 "You know, I think it's just exposure.
02:25 You get used to it a little bit and you learn that, you know, if you never walked down the
02:30 street in New York before, you'd probably be a little terrified too.
02:33 You ever see a city bus coming at you, you go, 'Ahh!'
02:38 Or a subway, you get so close to those subways.
02:43 But I just love it.
02:44 It's one of the few things in my life, there's 30 Seconds to Mars music, touring, rock climbing
02:49 that get me out of my head.
02:51 And we all need those things, you know, that give us a moment to take a deep breath, to
02:57 set aside our problems, our job, our conflict, our worries, and just to really be free and
03:04 in the moment.
03:05 And climbing does that for me, for sure."
