00:00 It's crazy how a defending champion is flying under the radar.
00:04 You're exactly right.
00:06 They're getting... it's the Rodney Dangerfield thing, you know,
00:10 about them, and they're not getting the respect that they deserve.
00:13 Hey everybody, it's time for the Bob Ryan, Jeff Goodman, Tang Weil, Long For The Ride podcast.
00:27 And we are sponsored by FanDuel, the exclusive wagering partner of the CLNS Media Networks.
00:32 Scored earlier this NFL season with FanDuel, America's number one sports book.
00:36 Right now, new customers get $150 in bonus bets with any winning $5 Moneyline bet.
00:42 That's $150 if your team wins.
00:46 Okay guys, let's get to the Celtics game last night.
00:51 I did find myself in Philadelphia. I did have a chance to go to the game.
00:56 And I will just tell you this, is that the Celtics lost that game.
01:01 They made a late run. But Bob, the only solace I take is the Celtics did not play well.
01:07 And Jalen Brown had an absolutely horrible game offensively, though he did do some other things.
01:12 If Jalen Brown has his normal night, the Celtics win that game by 10.
01:16 Yeah, you might say that. But I mean, you can say that, and that's fine.
01:21 It was kind of an inspiring game, frankly, in general terms, you know, in both ways.
01:28 Nothing special about it.
01:31 Certainly, Brown, once again, I point out that he's under scrutiny.
01:37 And of course, every game in which he does not play well, you know, he's going to have to hear about it.
01:43 And he's got to live with that.
01:45 You know, as I said, the number is not his numbers and seven, it's 304 comma, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, oh, you know, and that's reality.
01:53 And anyway, had they pulled that off, had was Ingus gotten him into the overtime, it would have it would be a fun thing to talk about.
02:03 But it would have kind of masked the fact that they deserve to lose that game.
02:08 And that late run, notwithstanding, they deserve to lose that game.
02:13 And from the time that they were up by 10 in the second quarter, from that point on, you know, they were outplayed badly, frankly, after that.
02:23 So I'm not overreacting.
02:26 It's regular season. It's a regular season game.
02:28 If they were seven and oh, as opposed to five and two, you know, we'd be whatever.
02:33 But that's my takeaway. Don't sleep on Philly. That's all.
02:38 Well, thank you.
02:39 That's my takeaway. You know, we talked about Maxi.
02:43 You guys know where I stand on Maxi.
02:45 You're 25 last night in the fan club ever since Kentucky.
02:49 And, you know, and beat is no myth.
02:53 And, you know, they they're going to be around.
02:56 They're going to be they're going to be heard from. And so good.
03:00 Good. Nice. Good. Good win for them. Is it a three horse race?
03:03 Philly, Boston and Milwaukee.
03:06 I'm not putting Philly there yet. I'm not putting Philly in that that yet.
03:11 I want to see more still from from Philly.
03:15 And I'm with you on Maxi. I am.
03:17 I'm now in Maxi. And it's funny because it's hard because I watch a lot of these kids when they're in college.
03:23 And a lot of these Kentucky players really don't do a hell of a lot like at Kentucky.
03:29 And then they get to the pros and you're like quickly Maxi, Jamal Murray, like these dudes.
03:34 Why hasn't John Calipari won more than one title? Well, they're young.
03:39 They are young. I'll give him credit for again, for forgetting them, getting a lot of these kids ready for the NBA.
03:46 He does that well. They are asking that question in Lexington, as you well know.
03:51 Yes. As you well know. Well, they want it done, though. Right. Most of them. Yes.
03:55 Yeah. That's why it's hard. Correct. You get him for eight months.
03:59 You get him for eight months. And again, I think he does prepare them for the NBA.
04:04 Well, I do. I just don't think it's the way to win a national title these days is not to be young.
04:11 Let's face it. But, yeah, getting back to the Sixers, you know, to me again,
04:17 I think they're a half a step back still from Boston.
04:22 But all I'm saying is don't sleep on a missile on it.
04:25 And and then, you know, we don't know how Miami is going to pan out this year.
04:30 And the thing we've learned that, you know, that Butler is always revved up for the playoffs.
04:36 So, you know, it's we're not making any definitive conclusions here at all.
04:43 So, you know, that is an intriguing team so far. If there's one. I think it is, too.
04:48 You know, there is an intriguing team that that we haven't mentioned yet.
04:53 Because this is not the what's going on in Indiana scoring wise.
05:00 And I had another big scoring night last night.
05:03 And it's something it's funny because I don't associate Rick Carlisle with that.
05:08 No, that's good. But all you want.
05:11 You wonder what when he had to coach Luca, if that changed a little bit and he realized, all right, you know what?
05:17 I'm not sure I'm going to get these guys to really guard at the highest level anymore.
05:21 We're going to have to outscore dudes. Well, Jeff, is he still taping his ankles for every game?
05:26 Does he still tape his ankles as a. I don't know if he still does it.
05:30 University of Maine, Rick Carlisle for two years. University of Maine. We bounced to Virginia.
05:35 I know. I love that. Yeah, he was. I always loved the fact he was he was older.
05:40 It was a 25 year old rookie because he went he went to prep school after high school.
05:46 He went to Worcester Academy. Then he went to Maine.
05:48 Then he transferred, sat out a year. Then he had two more years of Virginia.
05:52 He was 25 year old rookie, you know, which. So anyway, he was uncommonly mature.
05:58 A couple of questions I have for last night's game. Drew Holliday struggled.
06:02 There was a stretch where, you know, where is the ultimate second guess?
06:06 You know, when B came out, he got hurt. I think he got hit in the eye.
06:11 And the Celts could have made a run. It looked like they were going to run away with it.
06:15 But then Joe puts in. Oh, my God, I just he hasn't played that much.
06:21 The big guy. I just I can look at Cornett. Yeah.
06:25 You know, in holiday turns the ball over a couple of times.
06:29 Do you guys think holiday? How do you think he's doing right now?
06:32 Jeff, I'll start with you on this one. He's solid, right? He's solid.
06:35 But that's what that's what Drew is. I choose not a guy that you're going to be like, oh, my God.
06:41 There's no flash with him. He's never been flashed with. Right.
06:45 Right. He just does everything well. Nothing.
06:48 Well, I shouldn't say. Is he there yet? We talked last week.
06:51 No, he's there. He's there. Yeah. It's been what? Seven games. Yeah.
06:56 No, no, he's not there yet. And it's probably going to take him another month.
07:01 I mean, that's the beauty of this team in a way. Right.
07:05 Is. You know, two of really two of their key pieces here, like you didn't have last year and Derek White's only been with him for a year.
07:16 So I think you got my biggest concern right now with the Celtics ultimately is still a another big because Al looks like he's run out of gas.
07:27 He looks old. He looks. Yes, he looks old. He looks old because he might take it's like you need somebody else because you can't put all this on play.
07:34 You can't put all this on Porzingis. Right. You know, so you got to find Luke Cornett is evidently not the answer.
07:42 They they were talking him up in the preseason like he could be the answer for 15 minutes a game.
07:47 Luke Cornett's not the answer. Not if not if you want to win a championship. Luke Cornett can't be your eighth man.
07:53 So. You got to find somebody else here. With with the picks that they have, Brad Stevens has to kind of feel this thing out,
08:04 but do it early enough when you can get the chemistry and the continuity and everything with whoever you're going to bring in.
08:10 I wouldn't want to wait till the absolute trade deadline. I'd love to do it a little bit earlier.
08:15 But again, the hard part of that is, you know, it takes till the trade deadline for a lot of these teams to realize, all right,
08:21 I'm going to mortgage whatever whatever opportunities we have now. We're out.
08:25 You know, we're out. But I think there's going to be. Listen, there's going to be six to eight teams that are out of it, honestly, in two months that you could you could say to him, hey, at this point, picks.
08:40 I don't know who else you move at this point, like who's got any value.
08:45 They don't really have any guys. Their bench, their bench is just very underwhelming.
08:49 It is. It's call it what it is. It's very, very underwhelming. I know Sam Houser can make shots.
08:56 I know you like Pritchard, Bob. I like Pritchard, too, for what he is. They need one more guy, a proven guy.
09:02 Well, they need what White gave them two years ago, you know, at least. No, you're right.
09:07 And by the way, I will confess that I bought into Cornette last year at certain periods of time.
09:14 I thought, hey, he's better than I thought. I thought they were kind of lucky to have him.
09:18 So but now we're finding out it's not that was fool's gold. It's not. He's not.
09:23 He's fine as your 12th man. Like he's an NBA 12th man.
09:27 He's an NBA player. He belongs in the NBA roster. He should always have a job. But but you have to not ask him to do too much.
09:33 Yeah, I mean, I go ahead, Bob. I'm sorry. That's all right.
09:37 I but I have to admit I'm not going to pretend I wasn't sold. I thought he was the answer last year.
09:43 I was wrong. What do you guys think of Nick Nurse? Because when I saw that he made the move to Philly, they fired Doc.
09:48 I was like, OK, he became a great coach because he had, you know, Kawhi for a year.
09:52 But now down in Philly, the buzz is they're buying into his his offense a little bit. Plus, he doesn't have to deal with Harden.
09:58 So, Bob, I mean, is Nurse going to be better than Doc?
10:02 Well, you know, I'm probably I need to be recused on the subject of Doc, you know, because I'm a Doc guy all the way.
10:09 And I don't hold him accountable for for not winning in Philly and not at all.
10:15 Neither do I. And so is he better than Doc? No. But is he an acceptable NBA coach that that did?
10:23 In fact, he does have a ring and you can't take it away from him. And yeah, I had learned yet to why Leonard.
10:28 But I mean, you need more. He didn't hold them back. So, you know, he's fine.
10:33 But I don't think it was a sideways move at best in terms of the quality of coaching that they're going to get, as opposed to what Doc was.
10:41 I think hard losing, you know, Harden is is a distraction to Jeff. Right.
10:47 He certainly is now. He certainly is the way he was acting and playing.
10:53 I listen. Sometimes you just need a change. And I think Philly needed a change, you know, at a certain point.
11:00 It's like, all right. And what do you do? You know, generally you go with like an opposite.
11:05 Right. Like you go with Nick Nurse a little bit tougher, a little bit more old school came up through, I think, the Juco ranks and and the you know, the G League and whatnot.
11:17 So little different than Doc. So I think it listen, it's easy to say it's working after seven, eight games.
11:25 Like, like, come on, we got to give it some time here to see when they go through some adversity.
11:30 Yeah. Then how do they react to Nick Nurse score early this NFL season with FanDuel America's number one sports book?

12:12 Bob, the other game you watched, the Nuggets continue to chug right along and it's crazy how a defending champion is flying under the radar.
12:24 You're exactly right. They're getting it's the Rodney Dangerfield thing, you know, about them.
12:30 And they're not getting the respect that they deserve. So far, I was curious about the game because I was actually more curious to take a look at Golden State
12:40 and their current situation. But I was enthused about it. And I straight up watched the whole game.
12:47 And Curry, of course, had a class. It was Curry classic in that he only had three.
12:53 He made no two point field goals last night. Only six threes.
12:57 You know, they almost stole the game, but they didn't in the end.
13:03 And they had a shot and he had a shot. He had a chance for a tying basket was a left handed drive, a little flip.
13:11 And it, you know, it wasn't the easiest shot in the world, believe me. And it didn't go in.
13:16 And they they lost the game. You know, I had forgotten all about is Boston College's own Reggie Jackson.
13:25 I didn't realize where he was. He had 20 points last night. I just looked him up.
13:30 You know, he's he's had a very, you know, a very solid NBA career.
13:35 Made a lot of money, Bob. A lot of money. A lot of money. He's a career of 13 points a game guy.
13:40 I didn't realize that that was the case necessarily. And anyway, Reggie Jackson was there.
13:45 He's he had to start Murray's out. And, you know, joke joke.
13:51 It's nothing changes. There's nothing that we haven't seen. It's exactly, you know, the joke.
13:56 It's that we've come to know and appreciate. And, you know, so that was it was it was it wasn't fantastic game, I think.
14:05 But I want to see it. Do you do you think after watching Golden State, are you in on them as contenders again to win this whole thing or no?
14:17 Not really. I don't think so. I don't. But I would be, you know, you're not you're not going to get into playoffs.
14:26 Oh, goody. We're playing the Warriors kind of thing. But but you'll have to be afraid of them either.
14:30 I don't think. And, you know, Chris Paul looks old. Chris Paul just looks. Oh, yes. He's 38. We talked about how these guys think they are.
14:37 You can't imagine that they look old. Is it they are. And and and it's just that seriously, it's it's you know.
14:46 And he's not. But he has had a some he had an amazing game last week, you know, when he had a 13 assist game and no turnovers.
14:54 And so and, you know, that's what this is what we've learned. It was one thing we've learned.
14:58 And this league, at least, is that the great, truly great guys, as they age, they still will have certain throwback nights.
15:10 They're going to have certain throwback. Larry, Larry, that was Larry's last year or two.
15:15 Every once in a while. I don't be at a 46 point Sunday afternoon against Portland, I think.
15:20 I remember I was at the final four and I'm coming out of the afternoon session and Sunday, you know,
15:28 and and when somebody goes, Larry at 46 today, you know, and I said, really, you know, it's going to happen.
15:37 They're going to have flashback games every night. And that may well, it's one of Chris Paul's flashback games.
15:45 And when we seem to run into a bit of a speed bump, I mean, he slowed down.
15:53 I mean, he's 19. He's 19 years old. It's like his seventh game.
15:58 Jeff, OK, time out, time out. I'm slowing the roll. I understand. I got to get you in sports talk radio mode.
16:06 I don't have anything else to ask you. I know it's seven day kids. OK, this is what Felder used to say to me.
16:13 He goes, look, today is today. I don't know what's going to happen tomorrow.
16:18 You're right. It's seven games in. But but I think it's interesting to see him on the big stage.
16:24 Nick's already up for him. And I guess probably the way I should ask the question is, you know, he's not going to come in and sneak up on anybody.
16:31 I mean, the veterans are probably saying Jeff like, OK, maybe. All right, kid, not tonight.
16:37 Yeah. Mitchell Robinson, Mitchell Robinson. They kept asking him leading up to the game, his thoughts on Victor.
16:44 And you could tell he was pissed. He was like, all right, let's go. Well, Mitchell Robinson's in his sixth year.
16:51 He's turning 26 years old. He's played almost 300 NBA games when he's played seven games.
16:59 He's 19 years old. And oh, by the way, he's got Jack shit around him for the most part, too.
17:05 He doesn't have a very good team around him, where at least Mitchell Robinson.
17:10 What does he have to do? There's zero pressure on him. Just defend. And again, Mitchell Robinson, seven feet.
17:16 He's not six eight. So it's a pretty good matchup because Mitchell Robinson's bigger.
17:22 He's stronger. I can't wait to see Victor when, you know, even when he's 22 years old and give him a little bit more around him that, you know, to me right now.
17:33 He's going to be up and down this year again, largely because he's going to wear down.
17:40 Right. He's going to wear down. We know that he's. Oh, yeah. Right. Of course.
17:43 And he's playing 82 games. He's never done this. I just hope the biggest thing and I say this to everybody right now about Victor,
17:51 that puts him on this pedestal of he's going to be the next great thing. Right.
17:56 Well, Michael Jordan and LeBron and all the all time greats, their bodies held up for the most part.
18:04 Right. Almost all of them were able to play a long period of time without having serious injuries.
18:10 I know when he's got this workout routine and this routine to try to stay limber and stay in shape and, you know, his body.
18:21 But I just worry about that body type. I worry about it.
18:26 Well, he both he and Holgren. It's the great question because we know this question.
18:32 They have this phenomenal skill set, but it is it's asking a lot in that league to have that that frame.
18:40 And no question. By the way, a little clip I saw a pop after the game.
18:45 He was in his Belichick mode after the game, not not entertaining the fools very gently.
18:53 You know, very last night. No, at all. So. All right. So wait, wait.
18:57 While you're on that, while you're on that. All right. This is a great question for Bob here.
19:02 And you can weigh in, too, on this. All right. Of all. Well, he's been doing it a lot longer than I understand.
19:08 He's in the Hall of Fame. Exactly. We are not. Yeah, I understand.
19:14 Bob, of all the coaches, when you mentioned Belichick and you mentioned Popovich.
19:20 Who is the most miserable coach you've ever dealt with in any sport at any level?
19:24 Who is the guy? I couldn't stand Belichick. I couldn't stand dealing with him.
19:30 I just thought he's he's an asshole to the media. Oh, and I don't think he's an asshole outside of that.
19:36 I really don't. I think he actually has a personality. I've talked to enough people around him that say he's got an actual personality when he gets outside the media.
19:45 But I just think he treats the media like shit and there's no reason for it. Give me give me somebody who comes to mind in any sport at any level.
19:53 Well, that's very interesting. I, you know, I really don't I can't say I can identify somebody that there was that horrible, you know, that I was aware of.
20:07 And I really I don't know. I'd have to think about that one.
20:11 But here's the thing is that. The difference between what I think between Popovich and Belichick and maybe because I'm not on the Spurs beat and if somebody is on the beat, maybe they would, you know, differ.
20:24 But Popovich seems to be doing it tongue in cheek. Now, I didn't see him last night. OK, but he seems to be doing it tongue in cheek a little bit.
20:33 Bill despises the media. I mean, he has no use for them. Now, Jeff is right. Belichick is well, first of all, Bill Belichick is a brilliant man.
20:43 I mean, he is a very smart man. And generally, if you're smart, the sense of humor comes. Now, if you're in the inner circle, he has a very biting, cutting sense of humor, very smart sense of humor.
20:54 But he just like even I'll tell you this story, even the guys that, you know, everybody knows, like Pauly Perello and all those guys down there, you know, Fred down at the P.F.W.
21:04 The Patriot Football Weekly, which is now Patriots dot com. That is the in-house media arm of the Patriots, which the Krauts were the first ones in the league to do it.
21:15 Now, everybody has one. Bill. Cannot understand why a team would hire their own reporters.
21:26 I mean, those guys have dealt with that constantly. I mean, they get the money from the same tell.
21:33 And Bill has no use for them. Right. I mean, he has no compassion and no understanding. So I think pop.
21:41 I mean, Bob, I think pop is a little tongue in cheek and kind of I mean, Bill, just if Bill would say if he never had to deal with the media again, he would be fine.
21:53 I got to disagree. OK, agree, because there's this the Bill Belichick on display earlier on game day and earlier in the week as a rule is very different than the Bill Belichick that you see when we get to Friday.
22:11 And that Bill Belichick when you don't have to ask him the questions he doesn't want to answer about the specifics of the moment that that Bill Belichick that can write who is to knows more about football history than any coach who has ever coached in this league.
22:27 He's the greatest repository of football information that the NFL has ever, ever known. And you get them in that and you ask historical questions or reference questions and and position questions.
22:42 He's very good. I don't think he I my theory has been and by the way you mentioned it's funny when you said about you thought pop was tongue in cheek.
22:50 I formulated this theory, going back about five or six years ago that Bill walks off the podium and back into the coaches room. After one of these sessions it goes, I did it again.
23:03 I believe I don't think he despises the media I really don't. And, but, but I think he's having fun. He, he. This is the role he's playing. He plays different roles.
23:16 I will say this about Bill, which look right now we could. I mean, it all comes down to the players we all know that.
23:25 But when he when they had great teams the way he conducted, and he would shut down information. I mean Belichick if you if you're a young coach, and you want to look at somebody on how to avoid controversy Belichick was terrific at.
23:41 I mean really was it's harder to do in the NBA.
23:46 You know, but long as we're reminiscent.
23:48 My favorite press conference ever, and I'm sure I think Bob may feel the same way was parcels, because you could go into a parcels press conference.
23:56 You know, and I think Doc is the same way Doc had that same ability, but you can go into a parcels press conference like, okay, I'm going to question you about one of your players who, I don't know, is in deep trouble, and next thing you know you're laughing.
24:12 There was nobody better than disarming the media than parcel.
24:16 Bill parcels I said, if someone had from the day he took the job record kept track and recorded every single press conference.
24:27 And by the end time he left you would have had a fantastic book. Oh my god, you're right, because it. You didn't know where they were, anything was going to leave, you didn't know what metaphor and what analogy, what, what, what, what he was going to dread you know come up with
24:42 and right he was color. He was entertaining, they were absolutely entertaining his press see the most quote like, who's the most cool. I'll flip it from from the biggest asshole which is basically what I was trying to ask.
24:57 Yeah, yeah, to the most entertaining to the one guy that you want to be in there for either a press conference or a one on one with for an hour. What coach would that be.
25:10 I'm trying to list Stan Van Gundy. Absolutely, absolutely.
25:15 It was what was wonderful. I thought for us.
25:19 He was unfiltered and and he liked to have. He liked to have fun to, you know, a lot. We had a lot in college basketball the older guys like Jim Calhoun was phenomenal, phenomenal.
25:35 You didn't know what you're going to get you had to be a little careful, like I have my days were honestly afterwards, he wouldn't talk to me for like a day he would he would go after me, and then the next day, he would forget and move on.
25:48 And then, you know, Bayham patino still Bayham Bayheim hilarious awesome awesome hilarious here's the best one, the best current college basketball coach, the most quotable, and I don't know how much time you spent around him, Bob.
26:05 He Hurley at UConn is a machine. He is unbelievable and now it's even going to be a little bit a higher level now that he won the national title, but it was always that way, and he's quotable his wife Andrea is even more quotable.
26:23 He was only a guy that I'm sure depending on who you talk to would either get we put either of these two extremes, you know, and, and, and I was a friend of his from day one, and so you know I that's UB Brown, and people can be very hard on people in Atlanta.
26:47 He was especially hard on one of the writers, he just didn't respect them, he just thought that the guy did, didn't distinguish himself but that he was worthy of respect.
26:57 But if you like you oh my god, you know, and I gotta tell you, this is the classic Hubie. I am in.
27:06 I was in the Kentucky colonels okay at the time, and they are playing an exhibition game in Cincinnati, and I am there.
27:18 Whatever reason, you are you. Of course you are right because you're you Bob.
27:26 And they're playing this game exit of this exhibition game which they I don't even know where they want to loss, I think I lost.
27:32 There's a young kid from a you know what a tape recorder radio kid local, asking him, these, these deep serious questions about this exhibition game.
27:42 And he'll be goes, wait a minute, wait a minute, he said, is it. This is an exhibition game, he said, I'm, he said, my owner, who is an asshole.
27:54 I'm Brian Brown, my owner, who is an asshole wants to win these games. I'm trying to get my team ready for the season.
28:02 And I was.
28:04 I mean, and I was just a few people's prices, and many many ways, or the other one you'll love this one.
28:13 He's playing a playoff game when he's with the Hawks and Ray Williams. I was with the Knicks with the Knicks and Ray Williams has had a score sheet game, which, which included like nine turnovers, you know, and, and, and he goes,
28:32 effing guy, effing guy, he thinks it's the Rucker League.
28:40 I didn't realize he was that good as a.
28:43 Really, I learned a lot of basketball from UB Brown I'm gonna tell you something that he was one of my MBA, educate mentors that I learned a lot from you, john Thompson john Thompson was also john john john john did not he didn't love the meat, like,
29:01 how about I'll give you, I'll give you a story this was late.
29:05 After retired. I wrote a story on john Thompson the third and basically how it was time.
29:11 You know he had been lazy Georgetown had started to really fall off. Okay, so I wrote a story, talk to about 30 people, former players former coaches that all kind of agreed that it was time, you know that this program was going down and wrote it.
29:29 And then I saw Big John at the biggies tournament, right after, and I want to go up to him and get his reaction. So I went through the sports information director and Big John looked over at me.
29:42 And you could just see like there was here. I just wanted to do it because I felt like I needed to, I felt like I got to be accountable, you got to be there and if you want to go off on me, or give me your take on it.
29:55 I'm here. He wanted no part he was, you could tell if he had been a little younger, he might have gotten up out of his chair and kick my ass.
30:04 No, he was he could, he could be very intimidating obviously we never forget the man was six feet 10 way upwards of three bills.
30:13 No, he was a no, he was a he was a trip now some people like I know will buy and love some Michael will buy and love some I know guys, you know, but, and I, I didn't have much you know I had casual relationship.
30:26 Who are who started to do this to Gary. Who's the most intimidating player or coach, you've ever been around I kind of said it last week I think that Bob Knight was up there with me a player wise for me.
30:45 I remember being in a clubhouse. It was actually a spring training game, and Frank Thomas came in after going over four with four strikeouts right and I'm waiting in his locker like an idiot.
30:58 I don't know why I'm waiting his locker I should have known better but I was young. He comes over, and he takes his hand and he punches that locker as hard as he could.
31:07 I'm like, all right, I'm out of here. Yeah, there's no way I'm dealing with Frank Thomas now.
31:12 Well clearly the most intimidating guy, and I'm sure I'm hardly alone.
31:17 It would win the prize was Albert Bell.
31:20 And what Albert Bell did to to ruin a clubhouse was extraordinary.
31:27 And those good Indian teams, you know those wonderful teams that that didn't unfortunately never one damn thing even though that they had that great.
31:36 He was he the locker room was was poison, because of him. And, and that's what a very affable coach manager to Harvard, but yeah he was but, but, you know, I used to.
31:52 How about this.
31:54 I used to go to school at University of Arizona. They had spring training at high Corbett field right down the street in Tucson. I used to ride my bike I had a credential I used to ride my bike over there every day, then go to spring training.
32:07 And at that time you didn't know those guys they were all young Jim told me, Roberto Alomar Albert Joey Bell. I mean, it was Kenny Lofton like that was a young team that you had no idea when you were going over there.
32:22 Actually the one of the most intimidating people, maybe more intimidating at that point for me, to me, was Bob Feller.
32:32 Oh, he was there was there is like a pitching instructor or instructor man was he intimidating. He was a notorious commercial. Yeah, that was the word. Oh yeah he was not affable to say the least.
32:46 No, he was, he was very, I learned that one. By the way, you mentioned, Arizona.
32:54 Bells lieutenant if you were, you know, was was lofted. He was he was a day he was no date to beach either. No, he wasn't. He was an Arizona guy too and yeah he was tough to deal with Gary who, who comes to mind who's who was intimidating, who.
33:12 You've been around enough over the years, somebody.
33:17 Now I was never really intimidated I, you know, I knew that.
33:22 But what patino was going through a tough time.
33:26 You know I was working at Channel four, and we were running the Rick patino show.
33:32 You know, so we were kind of, you know, remember, you know, the, the, the great character Jersey read, you know, producer, the producer of the producer.
33:43 Yeah, he was a producer.
33:45 And I asked him questions that they didn't like.
33:48 You know, I got the desk there, because we were supposed to be kind of in bed with them, and I think we'll go to call about that.
33:55 But never really not. I don't really remember any of it I mean I just knew when I would go to a Belichick press conference I gave up.
34:04 I mean I would be like this is a waste of time I know some guys have to ask questions, but I would just go he's not going to answer it, you know, I don't have time for this I'm going to go deal with the players.
34:13 You know, to be quite honest with you.
34:15 But I had a pretty good run, I don't really have one of those plus, you know, also though.
34:21 Not that anybody cares for a big part of my career I was a pregame show host.
34:27 Right. I wouldn't exactly call us journalists, you know, you're different you weren't you weren't going to write you weren't asking the really tough questions in a locker room after a game.
34:38 No, right. No, no, that's where you know my was what's your favorite color. Right, right. No, I wasn't like Bob like you guys were Shaughnessy for that matter like you know Dan would always show up you know I never like when we do it.
34:50 Like, my God, remember, we were down in Fort Myers, we used to have the entire Red Sox team come over and do the six o'clock show with us on the beach we give them dinner slab on the back.
34:59 I mean I remember one time Bronson Arroyo. He showed up in a limo that we got from with a mirror ball in the limo with some gas, I'll just leave it at that of the opposite sex.
35:11 Hey, Bronson what's up hey fellas, you know, it was, I was a different. Yeah, it was it was it was a different time the only time I ran into it is when I asked Brady.
35:21 I was working with Callahan and those guys that I asked Brady about the cheating.
35:26 He wasn't too happy about that, you know, I just came right out, you know, and he was, you know, I asked him about the you know the deflate gate and all that.
35:33 And that was the, he was kind of surprised to I asked it so my career did not mirror the two gentlemen I'm talking with.

36:13 But Jeff before we go, you have a commentary on college basketball.
36:18 Well, I want to get Bob's take because Bob's a huge college Hoops fan and college basketball started Monday.
36:25 And my guess is Gary, you have no idea college basketball even started Monday because barely shitty games like every night has been a pretty much a shitty night.
36:36 You'll have like Tuesday. There was one good game. Auburn played Baylor in Sioux Falls Friday night is going to be loaded.
36:44 I'm going to be at Arizona at Duke. There's there's some really good games Friday night.
36:49 Texas A&M plays Ohio State. It's good. Finally, but the first four nights are garbage.
36:54 Absolute garbage. And it's because the coaches don't want to play anybody that early.
37:00 They used to have the Champions Classic. Well, they moved it back because of voting day.
37:06 And now I think Cal Perry and maybe one other coaches are like we'd rather have it the second week in the first week.
37:12 But that leaves a major void. My idea. And I've talked to a bunch of coaches about this.
37:18 My idea is to get whatever, eight, 12, 16 teams together, sign a two year deal.
37:24 And it's not necessarily the Dukes and the Kentuckys. It could be the Arkansas's, the Alabama's, the Purdue's.
37:31 Some of those teams that have coaches that have job security, two year deal.
37:36 And there's eight games over those first four days on different networks.
37:42 Might be ESPN because you're not going to play on ESPN Monday night because of Monday Night Football.
37:47 Play it at FS1 or Turner or whatever. Tuesday night, you play two games on ESPN.
37:52 Wednesday night, they have NBA on ESPN. Maybe play one game on the Dukes, one game on FS1.
37:59 Whatever it is, sign up for a two year deal with these second tier, but really good programs and coaches that have job security so that the sport comes out with a bang, not a whimper.
38:13 On these lines, I call your attention to the X that I put out there for the world to see the day after that opening night in which I annotated about a dozen final scores without mentioning who had played who.
38:30 Just said, here's your opening night. And, you know, ridiculous scores. The highlight of which was, and I did, was St. Mary's 107 Stanislaus State 28.
38:43 I'll repeat that. 107 to 28, folks.
38:47 St. Mary's is a top 25 team. It's not like St. Mary's is a really good team. I'm picking them to go to the Final Four this year.
38:56 Come on. So they know you right now this has been I look 50 years ago when I'm at BC, you know, you weren't opening up but you you wanted to get a game you were going to win, but somehow we, you know, it's gotten out of hand.
39:12 I mean obviously that with with this.
39:15 And you're right, it's.
39:18 I'm paying attention.
39:20 Okay, because I do care and I'm trying. And here's the thing though about college basketball that because of the, the turmoil we're in you don't know who's with who you don't know who transferred to where you need a complete refresher.
39:32 You know, I know. And you it's really hard to keep I just buy. I really.
39:39 I did yesterday, bought myself I was coming back from my trip to North Carolina and I, I bought myself the, the college college basketball magazine, so I could, you know, which those things are so outdated we do want the almanac.
39:55 It's a website now that we put together I'll give you I'll give you the login and oh yeah I know I was great I do need that. And, you know, and while they did make a disclaimer in the magazine to say, if any transaction.
40:08 Happened after August 24 we will. We won't have it. And, and I noted that there's at least once. Anyway, now I'll tell you that the transfer situation that bothers me, this is wrong.
40:22 Hunter Dickinson going from Michigan to Kansas is. It is what it is now it's it's not the world that you grew up in it's not my dad grew up in, and how about yourself getting this new month humongous contract, and you're not out of the
40:37 woods yet with with their out. No, they are. Yeah, nothing. They got nothing.
40:44 No, no, I missed I stand corrected that I don't think got anything out of all those schools Bob that were that were hit in the federal investigation.
40:57 Obviously, kind of Rick Pitino lost his job but based on not just that but based on the accumulation of things. Sean Miller lost his job at Arizona, will weigh loss his job at LSU, but the penalties themselves.
41:12 The only team that got hit hard.
41:28 Right, gentlemen, as we close things out, I will say, I did call Tony Allen and Marcus smart overrated on the pregame show. Neither gentleman appreciated it, I'll leave you at that.
41:56 Okay, I called I called Ted Washington an asshole.
42:01 Wow.
42:03 Washington and how to tell that story.
42:07 So, by the way, it can't speak Ted Washington was like 375 pounds got those tackle.
42:13 Here was the deal with Ted Washington, and this was again in Buffalo before he got to the Patriots. Anytime a reporter would go over to Ted Washington, and I was with the Associated Press at the time, young.
42:27 And he would give him this big song and dance, you know, geez, why would you be like it was just this big charade.
42:48 And his locker is next to one of the nicest people on the planet Marcellus Wiley's.
42:54 And I decided you know what, I'm gonna try it. I've been here a couple months, I'm gonna try it I don't even need them, but I'm like I'm gonna try it let's see what his reaction is so I go over.
43:04 Hey Ted you got a minute.
43:08 I can't believe you. I don't have time for this.
43:11 So I look right at Marcellus and I go why is he such an asshole.
43:15 And so, the next day, the defensive line has to come through the media room to get to their film room.
43:25 Okay, so the media room is kind of out in a main area, and they got to go to their film room right by the media room. So I know I'm like, oh shit, what's gonna happen now Bruce Smith likes me.
43:39 I'm like, what's going on Bruce Smith knows he can play me. I'm a young, I'm a young kid breaking in, so he knows he's got me. Okay, and he was going through some injury stuff so we had actually had a pretty good relationship in the short time I was there.
43:54 So, Ted goes through the media room and comes right up to me right up in my face, and he's pointing, he's in my face, and he goes, the PR guy was getting Scott Burke told at the time.
44:08 And I was like, he called me an asshole, and he's literally in my face and I'm like, I'm gonna die. Like I'm gonna die like Ted could kill me. And luckily, Bruce Smith kind of stepped in and and calmed him down.
44:24 And that was it. But man, yeah, and I said to him I go Bruce, I didn't, I didn't call you and I said you, you were an asshole, I tried to clarify it a little bit.
44:35 Oh yeah.
44:40 It was past tense. You're a nice guy today you're an asshole yesterday. That's right, that's right. Gentlemen, always a pleasure. Good stuff as always.
44:49 Talk to you again. We'll check in again next week. Bob Ryan, Jeff Goodman, I'm Gary Tagway, along for the ride with the Ryan Goodman podcast sponsored by FanDuel, the official wagering partner of the CLNS Media Network. Gentlemen, talk soon.
45:02 Okay.
