00:00 season you have to make a decision on what players get you up a division. The
00:04 type of talents you can bring in by doing loan players is higher than
00:09 what you can afford if you went into the market when you're a championship team.
00:12 So you bring in five or six loan players like every club does in a championship.
00:16 They help you go up. Now when you go up those five or six loan players are gone
00:22 or if you want to buy them you get quoted a price that is maybe even not
00:26 affordable to you anymore which is 20 million and above. And at that
00:30 moment in time you have a decision to make where how are you going to
00:33 get those five or six players, how are you going to replace them to even
00:37 have the same level as you had in the championship the year before.
00:41 Usually that starting point for us is already expensive because
00:47 you have to create a Premier League squad not a championship squad.
00:51 So what I'm trying to say is then you bring in players. Now for the budget we
00:58 are spending to try and bring in experienced Premier League players, forget about it.
01:02 Wages, transfer fee, no chance. At the moment I think that if you survive one
01:08 year you can do it but not in the first year in that way or you pick up free
01:12 transfers and whatever. But then you have the same situation as when we
01:16 went down the year before where if you go down you come down with a squad that
01:20 gets completely depleted because either you can't afford the wages or you can't
01:23 sell anyone and you get into a real dangerous territory if you come down.
01:28 So the decision where we are at the moment you have a whole
01:31 bunch of players who don't have Premier League experience but who have Premier
01:36 League potential mixed with a few players who have Premier League experience
01:40 because you can still name the players in our squad who do have Premier League
01:42 experience and that's a formula that we try and have at the moment to say okay
01:49 what is our upside if we stay up what is our downside if we stay down.
01:53 I've given you the most context on this question just because I think it's
01:58 important to know that it's not like we're left with a choice of fill it with
02:02 experienced players because what you then do for the club can have big
02:05 consequences afterwards as well or fill it just with kids. It's that balance that
02:09 you have to find and then I want to say you can find every flavour of squad
02:14 design and still quality defines everything and that's why at the moment
02:20 it's absolutely normal that we're in a position where we're
02:25 playing catch-up and I think we might as well try and enjoy it whilst we're
02:29 doing it and try and be together try and beat a club that can beat us.
02:34 Because I'm telling you now the way this league is evolving
02:38 they can do whatever they want, close shop not close shop.
02:42 It's going to be continuously tough.
