Retired engineer Barry Smith took his hobby to extremes and built himself the most amazing train set in the garden of his home in Scorton near Lancaster in Lancashire

00:14 Well, it came about because I had an OMB 00.

00:17 And when the wife said I could have a reel,

00:19 I lost interest in that and started on this one.

00:21 I always get a kick out of going through the tunnel

00:24 and over the bridge.

00:25 But there's nothing particular, because it's

00:29 all special to me.

00:31 I started in about 2005 and just been adding bits to it

00:38 and making the machines and the railways and the carriages.

00:42 It's just an ongoing thing.

00:43 So there isn't really a time scale on these things.

01:02 There were derelict gardens that were used many years ago.

01:09 And I simply needed access to get material

01:15 through for the garden.

01:16 So I built the railway initially for that.

01:20 It just became a hobby and just expanded from there.

01:54 But unfortunately, it's just for family.

01:57 And we have tried to use it and give public train rides.

02:01 But it just gets too out of hand.

02:03 And we can't get insurance anyway.

02:04 So we just keep it for friends and family.

02:21 I've always been an engineer.

02:28 And I never do anything unless it's practical.

02:32 So it started because I needed access

02:36 to get some gardening materials around.

02:38 And wheeling wheelbarrows up and down these hills

02:40 wasn't a solution.

02:42 So it just started like that.

02:44 And you just get interested in and a lot of encouragement

02:48 from the family.

03:29 other than make it look better.
