00:00 I showed up on the set and I took off and I kind of did a symbolic or a metaphoric kind
00:08 of "Is everybody with me here?" and nobody went "Stop doing that, Mike."
00:12 So I just said "Okay, I'm going to keep going like this."
00:15 So I just kept going, you know, and you hope that in the end you don't look at it and say
00:20 "Well, I certainly chose the wrong road there."
00:24 What do you think of this?
00:27 You like it?
00:28 You make your choice which way you're going to go, which direction you're going to go,
00:34 or I made the choice of which direction I would go and there's no turning back from
00:38 that.
00:39 The character keeps his pitch, you know, once you get inside him, he goes, he runs you,
00:42 you know, and then he starts to talk, speak, and so, you know, it's almost not really your
00:49 choice anymore.
00:51 Just give it up.
00:52 Beetlejuice!
00:53 Eeeeee!
00:54 He's slightly scary, doesn't necessarily mean he's mean.
00:56 Tim Burton, when we were talking about the movie and talking about some of the characters
00:59 and the take he had on it, it wasn't about making fun of other people or being judgmental.
01:03 I really like that about him because it's not a question of "We know it's funny, we
01:07 know it's cool."
01:08 I myself am strange and unusual.
01:11 He actually uses words like "kooky," you know, and he really does.
01:16 He thinks things are kooky.
01:18 I want out for good.
01:19 In order for me to do that, hey, I gotta get married.
01:22 Hey, these aren't my rules.
01:23 Come to think of it, I don't have any.
01:24 This was the first time there was almost no pulling back.
01:30 He would sometimes say "more, more," and, you know, I'll go forever if you give me more,
01:34 more.
01:35 And I definitely have a filtering system, you know, but it didn't seem like it was necessary
01:40 for this character.
01:41 Yeah, it's definitely trusting a director, though.
01:45 I didn't even care about him pulling me back.
01:47 I just listened to what he was saying and why he was saying, "Yeah, that's a good idea."
01:54 I just want you two to know you're welcome in our house any time you want to come over.
01:59 I'm smart enough to know pretty much when even if somebody says to me, "Do more, do
02:03 more," there's something inside me saying, "No, he's wrong.
02:07 I don't have to do more."
02:10 But when Tim would say, "Yeah, not only that, but do that," I said, "Yeah, you're right.
02:17 You are right, so let's just keep going."
02:19 And he and I would just keep upping the stakes all the time.
02:22 I've seen the Exorcist about 167 times and I keep getting funnier.
02:27 And it was just, you know, a great and probably necessary thing for me to do, that role.
02:32 I made myself laugh a few times and naturally I saw a few things where I thought, "Oh, I
02:37 wish I'd kind of done that."
02:38 But you know, very little of that second guessing in that movie.
02:42 Just saying, "Yeah, that's pretty much what I wanted to do."
02:45 And I enjoyed it.
02:46 [music]
03:00 Thank you.
