00:00 What if you never had to worry about painful sunburns or sun damage ever again?
00:08 Well, that's what researchers are suggesting with their new super cream, and it's all
00:11 based on synthetic melanin.
00:14 It's a hyper-regenerative cream, one that both protects skin while healing it at the
00:17 same time.
00:18 The cream is being developed by scientists at Northwestern University, and they say it
00:22 could revolutionize the skin care industry.
00:25 It works by trapping what are called free radicals, or electrons that are not bound
00:29 in a pair.
00:30 They are naturally occurring, but toxic.
00:32 However, our bodies have an enzyme system which deals with them quite well.
00:35 Still, at the point of an injury, like say a sunburn, many more free radicals are produced
00:39 and the body might not be able to deal adequately on its own, sometimes leading to skin cancer.
00:45 Melanin is one way our body deals with those free radicals, but the new synthetic, melanin-engineered
00:49 nanoparticles are much better at it.
00:52 With the researchers saying about their new cream, "The synthetic melanin is capable
00:56 of scavenging more radicals per gram compared to human melanin.
00:59 It's like supermelanin.
01:00 It's biocompatible, degradable, non-toxic, and clear when rubbed onto the skin."
01:05 And they add, "It has a regenerative healing property when applied as well, instigating
01:09 an immune response without inflammation."
