00:00 I think there are no accurate counts,
00:02 but it's around 1,500 Jewish people live in Tunisia,
00:06 principally in the island of Djerba,
00:07 but also on the mainland.
00:09 In fact, just down the road from me,
00:11 there's a huge city, which now sits mostly empty.
00:16 Now, talking to these people, spending time with them,
00:19 most of them, if not all, will have members of their family
00:22 who have Israeli passports.
00:24 So if the bill goes through in its current state,
00:28 that is essentially gonna criminalize
00:30 a significant portion of the Tunisian population.
00:34 And domestically, that can be problematic.
00:37 When Kary Saïd was running for president,
00:39 he made great pains to emphasize the role
00:43 his family had played in smuggling Jews
00:45 out of the sight of the Nazis during the Second World War.
00:48 So for him to then promulgate a bill that turns around
00:51 and criminalizes that community could be difficult.
